Would have been more fun to watch Light defeat L, then over the years mislead and pwn policegays, kill M, N, and the rest of the alphabet at the Yellow Box, and attain total victory and become God of the New World, only for L to have set up some clever trap before he died that Light would ultimately fall into if he ever attained that godhood.
Obvious trap is L sets shit up in such a way that even after he's dead, if Light achieves his goal, he will be tricked into writing his own name on a piece of the Death Note.
It will only happen if Light is actually Kira. eg. Like L leaves a report exonerating people he investigated, that Light will find, and Light adds his own name.
