This. I imagine it is a giant catastrophe and we see a bunch of heroes doing damage control and rescuing civilians while Superman takes on the big guns. Not saying they won't frick it up, but I can see where they are coming from having a bunch of cameos to show how vast the DCU is and how it is already established to have a whole league of heroes and then some.

A few years down the road consider another trilogy. First film he starts work at the Planet lets say, by the end maybe he gets a suit. Second film introduce Lex Luther if you want to rush things. Close out the trilogy with his saving Lois from plane and revealing himself to public. Why is this so hard?

You all really have this weird fixation with stock prices as some goal post. I suppose that's why Game Stop and AMC are such successful businesses today, because their STONKS are STRONG, amirite?

WBD has a lot of debt, so does Disney and so do a lot of these other companies. That's something suits on Wall Street don't like and that depresses the stock market.

However, cash flow and cash on hand is a better indicator of the strength of a company. AMC survived because it was successful at negotiating some of its debt without having to go into bankruptcy and without needing to sell it's ass like Alamo Drafthouse just did.

Game Stock on the other hand, is a dead company walking. The people who have lost money on this stock will continue to lose money and they will end up like Red Lobster franchisees or like RL employees and the 99 Cent Only employees who got shit canned with little notice. Only the owners of the real estate of RL made out like bandits whereas the owners of the real estate that 99 Cents Only sit on will not.

But WBD isn't in those kinds of business, so what they need is cash flow and cash on hand. They have both.

That's not to say they don't need to pay down debt. But they are doing that. AT&T saddled Discovery with the debt, which is why you see that huge increase in PICREL and that DEBT INCREASE explain the current/recent stock price drops.

    >Have to bring in all these other characters so audience don't get bored.

Everyone thinks Superman is too goofy and overpowered, I think he's not goofy or overpowered enough. All the cool stuff about Superman is the weird stuff that modern adaptations leave out. Superman should have an arctic base full of confiscated alien tech as well as a zoo full of extraterrestrial critters. He should a superpowered dog, he should have a miniature city in a bottle, Superman robots to fill in for him/throw suspicion off Clark Kent. He should have traveled to the future as a teen to fight with the Legion of Superheroes, he should have close friends who see both Clark and Superman everyday but still aren't sure they're the same person. His ex-girlfriend is a telepathic mermaid. That's the good shit. You take all that away and Superman is just a strong guy who flies and there's a million of them.

The issue isn't setting up or not setting up, the issue is precedent. The precedent for DC is stuffing things in and not handling them well. The worst MCU movies coincidentally also suffered from stuffing too many characters in with no decent set up. And while people admonish the origin story it is also there for a purpose.

Yeah yeah I know what that homosexual said, but considering the plot is about Superman learning and trying to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human unbringing, it's basically an origin story with extra steps like The Batman.

          Anonymous

I don't have it out for Gunn and neither am I calling every small thing a frick up. The vast majority of people complaining are just following the perception and narrative that superhero bubble has burst because DC shit the bed multiple times and Marvel caught diarrhea. It is people with no real good expectations for this stuff anymore hearing things that don't change that perception. That's all. I for one know the plebians are fickle and for as many people who claim the bubble has burst and dance with glee there is just as many lighting candles in secret silent prayer for it to return and even a hint of "it's slightly good" will be them declaring superheroes are back baby.

          So yeah, there are issues.

These people are playing supporting characters. We're talking no more than 15 minutes-ish tops. Gunn is inspired by the JLI era, and the JLU cartoon, and New Frontier. He wants to tell a story of Superman rising to become the "good guy" of Earth. Other super heroes will exist to serve as window dressing and present philosophical different approaches to being a hero-- that will serve to make Superman stand out.

We've already seen a Superman origin story. People know it. It's been told for 45 fricking years in movies. People are tired of Superman being in boring movies. People just want a good fun Justice League/Superfriends movie.

forgot to add, he's casting the actors he likes as these B list supporting superhero characters because the plan is to sprinkle them in as supporting characters throughout the first chapter of his DC movie universe.

yeah, all these other heroes are very minor, specially compared to Supes.

Yeah these people don't understand that *this* is the only way you'll ever get characters like Guy and Hawkgirl and Metamorpho in a movie.

There's too many characters and studios + casuals ALWAYS ONLY want the big guns. That's how it works in floppies too. The Bi listers and C listers aren't deep enough to carry their own franchises. They have always existed as window dressing.

Gunn knows we're past the point of Nolan-inzation. It's been 22 years since Smallville which was on the air for several years. 30 years since Lois and Clark. 50 years since the start of FOUR Christopher Reeve movies. 50 years since the start of several years of Saturday morning cartoons. George Reeves was on TV 70 years ago. This is the 3rd Superman movie in the last 10 years. There is a second Lois and Clark show on TV right now.

People know Superman. Can we just get to the fun part already? The one where he's having adventures and inspiring a whole lineup of superheroes? Because Gunn's premise so far sounds like the closest attempt to that.

Or do we need to see him brooding as a teen in kansas for 90 minutes? Do we need a movie and a half to set up Zod again?

      You don't know that.

But even if it's the case, it's a cameo from a show most people will never see, so it's just going to discourage the audience who feel that they're missing out but don't want to bother with the filler stories. Not to mention that the movie was already bloated with characters before they crammed in Creature Commandos.

This isn't Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy, it's a solo movie, and it's supposed to be the first. But somehow it stars more characters than the Justice League and Avengers combined, and those movies had time to build up to that.

Everything we've seen from Gunn so far has been awful. The actors, the costume, and now more characters in a movie that already had too many characters.
