Out of respect for Fielder's previous work I will watch all of it, didn't know what I thought after 2 episodes but episode 3 was "better" and it's free to torrent anyway so I'll finish it.

This show is more excruciating to watch than any horror/thriller I've ever seen. It's like if someone took every single intrusive thought I have about making social faux pas or memory I have of embarrassing things I did and condensed it into a linear story. There are people out there like Asher and I can't think of a more terrifying thing than finding out you're him.

I get that Fielder doesn't want to be pigeonholed into stuff like The Rehearsal and NFY, but that's his wheelhouse and he has cornered the market on that specific type of comedy. He's very very good at it, probably the best. This just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's because I haven't seen any of Safie's work, but I don't find it particularly funny or engaging. It's very strange, so at least it's different in that regard, but it's clearly another israeli anti-white shit pile.

I'm an unapologetic Safdie fan and like Nathan so I was looking forward to this. The episodes are weird and uncomfortable and I have no idea where its going beyond the few things reviewers have mentioned.
I do feel like both Asher and Whit are flawed characters with issues (obviously) but there is a part of me that thinks its deeper than "hurr durr gentrifiers bad".
Like, yes they're doing this for money and fame and are gentrifiers, but they do seem to give somewhat of a shit about the community (dealing with the shitty art to support and uplift an artist, being pissed about their shops not being open when the show isn't shooting, letting the squatters staying and shooing the cops off of them). Yeah a good amount of this could be superficial but there is an element of "nobody else is doing anything here".
90% of the residents seem borderline moronic, the buildings are neglected, there are homeless people everywhere (shelter full, no jobs) and they are putting up their own cash to keep people in their homes, despite there being some financial gain for them.
Maybe I just don't have a good grip on gentrification in general but I'm really hoping the show isn't just 100% anti-gentrifier nonsense. Beautiful areas of my city have turned into slums because people are too lazy to take care of them, don't see how investing in their community could set them up for life, or are just to poor (NO WORK BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO LIVE THERE OR SPEND MONEY THERE) to do anything about it.
