The Fall of the House of Usher is great

I'm just gonna say it. How Flanagan combined this many Poe stories and still managed to produce one coherent story is fantastic. The cinematography is beautiful, the actors fantastic and the music is great as well. Easily his best show since Hill House.

That one didnt bother me too much because that was Rod purposefully stalling the DA. The ones that bother me are the cynical "Thats how the system works" monologues, mostly because they just serve as over explaining shit and feel out of place, they are there so the actor can have his big "look Im acting, look how long this line is" moment

The last about consumers when we are having this tense moment between her and rod is the worst of all, and its the most out of place. I get that the idea is that she's rambling so she doesnt notice that she's drinking poison, but cmon, we could have had a dialogue about their relationship and there mistakes in place of Monologue about Capitalism #12

Just finished it the other day. It was really good. Better than Bly Manner for sure. I was thrown off by the sheer amount of gay multi racial couples and trans garbage, but I think that was kinda a joke and meant to shame it. Every scene in the old house with the DA was brilliant and peak spooky vibes.

There are literally more gay/bisexual relationships in the show than hetero ones by a huge margin. It's honestly insane and goes well beyond the idea of "look how degenerate these assholes are".

      >Roderick Usher signs a deal with the devil that makes him rich and famous
      >in return his bloodline will end after him
      >all his subsequent children become gay, ensuring no further offspring
      I'm thinking based

I actually had the though towards the end that he intentionally had a bunch of random kids with degenerates and foreign women to shield his 2 real kids. He knew death would come for them so he made a bunch of random kids to go first that he didn’t really care about.

          Anonymous

I think it's true that he genuinely doesn't remember signing the deal, or not taking it seriously. Roderick seems to believe he is the cleverest man alive, while in fact he ows all his success to Madeline and Verna. Every character had a fatal flaw, for Roderick it was hubris.

            Anonymous

I don’t know, while Rod seemed to be a fool most of the time and followed his sister, he wasn’t dumb. And seemed to accept the wish in the bar way faster than Mad. I think his real weakness was cowardice. He fathered a ton of kids because he knew when the last of his bloodline died he’d be next, so he made a bunch to protect himself and his first born kids.

              Anonymous

That's a pretty good interpretation honestly. It bothered me that he jumped on the opportunity to sell out his kids for his own gain while Maddie was hesitant when up to this point it was Roderick who still had some semblance of humanity while Maddie was a cold calculating manipulator. But I guess the cowardice angle makes sense.

                Anonymous

I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but they didn’t transition Rodrick well as a young man. He went from passionate dreamer who was appalled to see forgeries, to backstabber real fast and t eh never really gave a good reason. Madeline obviously was a big influence, but he seemed to be immune to her most of the time. And as adults they’re shown to be in balance, not one dominating the other. So it surprised me how ruthless he got so fast

                Anonymous

Maddy called the shots on pretty much everything Roderick did in their youth. I do agree that his character changed way too quickly. Maybe it was supposed to be a taste of the forbidden fruit kind of deal.

I fucking despised how it flip flopped from one great point to an absolutelly atrocious one. It felt like there was 1 competent writer and 3 retarded nepo-babies in the writing room.
    >Eldricht abomination that regards humans as playthings and curiosities. Fully detached from them and puts them in front of faustian bargains just to see what they would do
    >Seems to understand that different breeds of humans make different choices
    >FUCK YOU AND YOUR SAILING AROUND THE WORLD IF YOU COULD ONLY GIVE 1% of ELON MUSK'S CASH YOU COULD STOP WORLD HUNGER
    >Gives a monologue about cause and consequence, sentencing 80 people to die by melting their skin and organs because Perry decided to fuck around the water pipes.
    >But Oh no! Mu poor Mulatto woman! Need to warn her to get out of there!!!
    >Gives the twins the option to creat an empire based on opioid, a literal mountain of corpses over the span of decades
    >But not muh poor sweet, little angel Leonore. I'm literally crying tears as I give you the sweetest most painless death of the whole family.
    >I have lived aeons, outside of time and space. Humans have made atrocities that I have witnessed over and over without a care in the world
    >But you bumped a ton of coke and tortured your wife? That is a bridge too far MISTER, I personally will intervene to torture you and berate you for being a CHUD.
    >Of my sweet Cleopatra you are just so much of a girlboss that I will forgive you for snapping my neck and trying to do a loophole around my rules by killing your brother. You GO girl!
I hated how inconsistent it was and how much of a fucking Mary Sue Madeline was. She was as despicable as the rest but somehow she gets a free pass?

      >I hated how inconsistent it was and how much of a fucking Mary Sue Madeline was. She was as despicable as the rest but somehow she gets a free pass?
How the hell did Madeline get a free pass. She was mummified while alive, her eyes ripped out and replaced with stones and then left to claw her way out of the basement for hours. She had one of the worse deaths.

        Anonymous

Yeah, but the whole show made a point about how she was always in the right, the one to steer the ship, to lead the company. How she was a strong woman that needed no man, etc.
Besides, it was her brother that did her in not the abomination. For some reason, it's the abomination that kills everyone but it's the brothers that kill each other? And the rest of the family got killed first by getting humiliated and everything taken from them, the last of which was their sanity. Madeline died in a fit of rage while getting high praises from whatever passes as god in this world. She didn't get humiliated and broken as the rest of the cast. Basically she got a free pass from the writers. If it were me I would have put her in a positon where all her plans somehow fail, that she can outsmart the goddess, be on top of the world...only to be humbled by schitzo Dr.Manhattan.

          >Yeah, but the whole show made a point about how she was always in the right, the one to steer the ship, to lead the company. How she was a strong woman that needed no man, etc.
Her interaction where she berates Annabel Lee for being a housewife and mother paints Madeline as a sociopathic monster. We are not supposed to like her. She is as horrible a person as anyone else in that family and the writing repeatedly emphasizes this. In her last monologue she tries to shift blame away from her, but it's clearly bullshit and framed as such. If you think the point was that Madeline was always in the right, you've missed the point entirely.

            Anonymous

Again, I got that she was a complete sociopath and a full blown cunt but the writers sure as fuck favoured her much more than the rest of the cast.
            >She got mummified
But not publicly humiliated, dressed down or even confronted. When the writers pick her as a favourite and try to make you like her it's like the movie "I Care a Lot" where, the main character is as despicable as they come but the writers tried by all their might to make you like the unlikeable cunt.

I liked the scene with Leonore a lot but I agree with the rest of your post, especially Madeline. What a fucking horrible character.
      >that scene where she pitches the IT stuff to Griswald and he becomes a complete caricature of a radical feminist's idea of every man in a management position while she is the most awesomest Einstein-killer tier supergenius that ever lived

        Anonymous

The funny thing is that, in that scene, Griswald actually read her like an open book, dismantled her plans and didn't even hold a grudge. Yet we are somehow to believe he was a fool? I keep saying, 1 good writer and 3 nepobabies in the room.

Yeah the guilt shaming from the monster that feeds on misery was odd.
      >if you stopped making television for a year you’d solve world hunger
Fucking kek money has never been the problem. We’ve thrown billions at hunger and given away lifetimes of food. It just gets wasted or misappropriated. And btw if you canceled TV for a year millions of people would be out of work and would also fall into poverty and hunger. But hey, it sounded cool in the script.

Indeed and even out o character for the monster. Shit, after lifetimes of making faustian bargains...she still doesn't get that different humans are different? But now, "muh capitalism bad". At the end the raven chic reminded me of crossroad demons from supernatural. Demons that should be horribly scarred and tortured souls from hell that act like nothing happened and are basically just snarky teenage girls with power fantasies. If raven chic was really a timeless being that’s witnessed all of humanity why is she so casual and takes the Ushers problems so personally.
