It wasn't a bigger deal because Mel Gibson had been cancelled by Hollywood israelites by then despite it being his last good film of the decade.

well on a somewhat side note, smallpox etc actually traveled across the land faster than the conquistadors. Of course they had to at least arrive on the continent to bring it, but any indigenous leaving the first islands where contact was made would have taken diseases back to the main land (or those captured slaves etc). I've read that the conqs would get into cities that had already died from the diseases.

People hate this because it takes away their big anti white narratives. When Cortez shows up he blends in to the people and sees all the horrors and decided they need to be stopped. Then much later on all the various new Latin American/Mexican governments were formed and a rule of law established.

Everyone prefers the Spanish guys who steal all the gold and thirsty for genocide narrative because the person with power is always bad.

We already think so little of ancient brown cultures, their reputation can't take much more trashing, whereas ancient white cultures are generally, if begrudgingly, recognized as forming the basis of our current global societies.

So many people mention this movie to me all the time. I remember some super Christian kid was telling me how much he liked it. People don't care about gore because it was "realistic".
Heck even my dad was reciting a scene to me last night.
