If you created a semi popular underground comic aimed at adults, would you be ok with it being turned into a g rated show for kids?

        >What's it matter so long as it's good?

Uh... Well, it's not a good show, like not even remotely. The "good" first season has a completely nonsensical plot that relies on the villain making bizarre tactical errors that would make other cartoon villains facepalm. It's basically only considered "good" because the remaining nine seasons somehow ended up being even worse (and because that first season fit neatly on a single VHS tape, making it easy for kids to internalize it by simply watching it too many times).

So from a creative standpoint, it was indeed a total mistake.

According to Eastman and Laird, Sakai had more than one chance, but he'd have to give up/sell/share at least some of the rights to Usagi and he isn't willing to do that. That's also one of the main reasons why the current Usagi show is a spin-off.

Based Stan holding on to his rights. He makes enough money as it is, he's happy owning his shit. I wonder what will happen when he dies though he is pretty old and I don't know if he has kids.

Difficult question. I'd say yes, it is OK but it would require a bit more tact than how the concept has been approached.

Most stories in those comics are not as child-unfriendly as you might think, it's mostly extreme violence and some "adult" references which would need to go. The problem is that many people who have attempted to make child-friendly versions tend to not take their task seriously enough, and as such they rob the characters of their dignity simply because they think it's too weird to take seriously, think the MCU quipping on overload. Much like how the MCU undercut the tone out of fear of being seen as taking a weird thing too seriously in the eyes of the normies, kiddy TMNT does the same thing but far worse. Sure, Mutant Turtles may seem like a concept not worth taking seriously but you can literally take that approach with anything, it's a sliding scale of subjectivity here and deciding it's not worth taking seriously because it's out of the scope of realism is a slippery slope. You could just as easily dismiss the notion that anything using unrealistic elements isn't worth taking seriously, including but not limited to:
      >Dracula
      >Frankenstein
      >Night of the Living Dead
      >Alien
      >Conan
      >Cthulhu
      >Batman
      >Jurassic Park
      >Star Trek
      >The Birds
      >James Bond
The idea that something unrealistic should be automatically dismissed from being taken seriously is, quite frankly, not a great position to take on. Kiddy TMNT can't be overly violent, that doesn't mean it should be treated like a joke either.

Was TMNT ever "for adults"? It started as a parody of Daredevil for fricks sakes, the premise was never one you should take "THAT" seriously and prides itself in goofy sci-fi bullshit taking heavy inspiration from b-movies.
It's about as "for adults" as Star Wars was.

These threads tend to get populated by 2003/Mirage guys that are just barely into their 20s and are very concerned about appearing like mature adults. That's also why they're super angry that the turtles aren't constantly killing their enemies.

Obviously it did something right, the only reason TMNT is known at all is because of the 87 cartoon. That was a huge force in kids entertainment at the time and inspired almost every single kind of tie-in imaginable including 2 live action movies.

Kids liked the show despite the animation errors or wacky plots.

Agreed, April and Casey are shit characters. Wish they would stop showing up, but sadly idiots are going to say "You can't get rid of trash characters! You will get Next Mutation!" And even if you can convince executives to not bother with Casey, to tell them that a female character like April is not going to exist in TMNT media is the equivalent of committing a crime against political correctness you can't exclude twats in media. You always need at least one twat. Frick this trash Earth.

2012 April was good the first couple of seasons. '86 April was pretty fun. IDW April started well at least.

2003 April was just a wet blanket almost all the time, incapable of actually enjoying the weird shit going on around her. Still blows my mind that she was offered a chance to see real live dinosaurs and went "No."
