Minus One is a more compelling movie, but Shin Godzilla is a unique interpretation and artistic stamp on a classic character. Both artistically valid, but Minus One's proof is in the pudding. That movie became a phenomenon, Shin was a very good movie for the loyalists.

Eh. Shin Godzilla was a success as well. It made 78 million compared to minus one's 107 million. It should also be noted that Minus One got a wide release in US at a good release date and Canada helping it gross 56 million here(half its gross). Shin got a limited release for 2 days or something.

I liked Shin, but it was never going to be a worldwide success like Minus One. It is an intensely nerdy Japanese film with very limited universal appeal.

Minus has more "universal" appeal because it has better character work than most Western movies, let alone Shin. I like Shin btw but it really was just an extended EVA episode, it's a good satire of Japan's response to a crisis with little else (but indeed, it nails that satire). Minus One is the better story.

Yamazaki has spoken openly a lot that his strategy for Minus One was to do the opposite of what Shin Godzilla did in everyway. Where the soundtracks are placed. Godzilla's models. How Shin was about Godzilla making landfall but Minus One was about fighting in the ocean. A personal drama vs a political one.
He did it all on purpose because he thought it was suicide to try to compare directly to anything Shin Godzilla did.

What's funny to me is that by doing all those opposite things it also inverted the Japanese vs Overseas critical and commercial reception. Shin Godzilla is much more popular and critically acclaimed within Japan than the rest of the world. Minus One inverts that too.

        Anonymous

Its not like Minus One wasnt popular in Japan, made a little less than Shin did in the jap box office but Minus One still did great with their critics and swept their academy awards

          Anonymous

It's all relative. Minus One actually won one more award but less prestigious wins.
Another personal inversion, I'm really looking forward to Minus One getting a sequel. I saw Shin Godzilla and though "Ok good Job but stop here".

            Anonymous

A sequel to Shin would have absolutely ruined it. The ending shot alone made it impossible to do a sequel.

Minus One is a better all-round movie and is clearly in the tradition of the older films, there's some very obvious references to the original, vs Ghidorah, and GMK.

But Shin is more interesting and is a serious attempt to make a film that has DNA from the original but re-imagines the whole concept to make it relevant to the current era. I'd say its goal is to approach the subject as if it were a new idea, and take it dead seriously, and I think it succeeds.

      Anonymous

      >Minus One is a better all-round movie
I really don't get why this is a prevailing view. The melodrama is more cliche, the effects are worse, the action is worse, the plan to defeat Godzilla managed to be more ridiculous than ramming him with explosive-filled bullet trains then dropping a skyscraper on him and filling his tummy with coagulant. It's a good movie but people act like it's Chinatown or something

Minus Ones is a better movie to watch. It has the best human characters, it's easy to follow. Shin is more interesting but the critique of Japanese beaureacracy has the downside of you having to sit through the frustration of it.

      Anonymous

Yeah, in Shin I feel that the political angle petered out in the second half of the movie and the main characters just went through the motions after all the boomer characters died. The angle with how the Jap youth can make the difference is nice and all but the movie didn't do much to illustrate that other than the main characters standing around watching the fireworks in the end sequence.

        >Good human cast who actually matter in the overall plot by affecting the hard counter to Gamera
        >Gamera at his most heroic and selfless, but also taking more damage than ever before and powering through it.
        >A full on sci-fi plot like the Showa originals but played straight and with a unique and totally original villain who fits perfectly with those kinds of movies. Were it not for the god-tier suitmation, Legion easily fits with something like Zigra.
        >Some of the biggest destruction scenes out there, including a full on nuke blast.
        >A desperate final battle

The later Showa movies are rougher and lower budget than the Godzilla films of that era, but they're worth watching for kaiju fans. The first three Gamera films (the original, vs Barugon, and vs Gyaos) are very good and definitely worth watching.
Super Monster, the last Showa movie, is a stock footage compilation made by a company that bought the rights. It's not worth watching.

I really like both. Minus One has more compelling characters and feels more like a traditional Godzilla film. Shin feels like something totally new, and they say it examines modern government bureaucracy is interesting. Ultimately, I'd give a slight edge to Minus One, because that "American" b***h in Shin is painful to watch while I had no major issues with Minus One.

I think Minus One is a better movie, but I way prefer the portrayal of Godzilla in Shin. I don't like the human side of the story past the first act of Shin, it's interesting at the start but as it becomes more optimistic it begins to get a lot more boring to watch and I found the characters annoying. I don't mind that it became more optimistic as it went on, but I wish it did it while still feeling grounded instead of having the fairly believable bureaucrars get replaced by what feel like wacky shounen characters.

It looked utter trash. theyre trying to humanize these monsters as much as possible, and just adding higher and higher stakes (i think i saw a huge tribe of King Kongs.. ok) Just bunch of CGI trash and some moronic "world is in danger" plot, and also they make Kong wear a Thanos / Hulkbuster glove. and

There should be a Godzilla appears in Feudal Japan movie sometime. We know the pre-radiated Godzilla attacked Odo Island regularly. How a bunch of villagers would fend off a smaller, 91/Minus One scale Godzillasaurus would make an interesting story.

I'm tired of Godzilla not just eating normal food. It's a weird Heisei invention that stuck for too long. At least the Legendary version can eat normally even though we don't see it aside from subtle way it showed Godzilla consuming parts of Ghidorah.

They could do that, but they could use a radioactive meteor as an excuse to get him up to size.
I would be up for a Godzilla movie that takes place when Admiral Perry showed up in Japan. Part of the plot could be reluctance to accept the Americans help via their Gunboats.

true, but it kinda hurts a core tenet of the series if the mutation is caused by something besides humanity. Besides, in the feudal era the Minus One size would already be huge. The main reason Godzilla kept getting upscaled was due to the rising size of buildings in Japan. Plus, frankly, it's kinda fun to keep it in nebulous canon where it could've been history in an unspecified existing universe.

-1/10 is a total hamfisted clownshow full of bad hyperbolic theater-like "acting" and extremely predictable "le sad" scenes that come across as nothing but forced and manipulative. I genuinely do love the horror aspect and the sheer scope of the destruction of Shin, he's a true blue horrifying monster and as a result he's very compelling onscreen, it feels almost dry and slow when he's not. The creativity is apparent and the effects did a fantastic job all around. While Minus 1 is brutal and animalistic, Shin is otherworldly and disgusting, which just oozes danger so much more. Shin, I would argue, is the scarier monster.

That said Minus 1 unfortunately just crushes it on a character front. Barely anyone in Shin had a character arc to speak of, while every single major and minor character in Minus 1 progressed and had a completed arc in the runtime. They were compelling, great to watch in the downtime and easy to root for in the disaster time. And while the rampage in Shin was visually amazing and I would argue much more of a complete spectacle than Minus 1's, it was hampered by the fact none of the main characters were in the thick of it. They were just watching it happen like spectators, much like we did, so it removes a lot of the tension and becomes "Goddamn looks cool'. Which obviously is fine, Kaiju movie and all, but it just cannot compete with 2 people who we have seen and learned about in the middle of the danger. Both major rampage and final battle.

I'd give it to Minus 1 just because if it was JUST Godzilla, it would be great, if it was JUST a character drama with the cast, it would be better, but both of them together fit just so much better than clashing political drama with Shin.

Shin because I like the fact you can tell Godzilla is in a frick ton of pain and because it's clear Anno had an axe to grind with the Japanese government. It's a film with a more bitter message which is something I respect. Universal themes like moving on from the pain of war is nice and all, but inspirationary reaction is nicer to me.

Not unless they redo the human animation from the ground up. Yeah, story's actually pretty great sci-fi pulp, yeah Gamera's fights in this are top fricking tier, and yeah the main characters managed to avoid being annoying despite being kids and all of them have developed character arcs, but holy fricking shit is it a chore to actually make it through the human scenes out of sheer headache from the lack of frames.

If they re-released that shit with just a bit more frames rendered it would easily be the best Kaiju show out there no question. As it stands some shmuck with a MMD model can do better.

It's funny because especially in the commentary, Wingard professes himself as primarily a Godzilla fan and the one who always saw Godzilla as winning this hypothetical fight. He said he had to figure out a take on Kong that would make him interested, and yet Kong is clearly the protagonist of both movies.

I honestly imagine it's because they know Toho might pull the plug on the rights at some point and they want Kong to be the defacto MC of the series as a result. It probably also helps that the movies with Kong make more money than Godzilla.

I don't believe when he says he's such a huge Godzilla fan. he also says his version is like the 70s heroic Godzilla. Except his Godzilla is far less heroic if at all compared with G14 and KotM. And it won't change in the new movie. He gets nothing from Wingard. In fact he gets shit taken away from him. He also said that to him Monsterverse is basically Kongverse.
He's a Kong guy and he gives his boy everything at Godzilla's expense I absolutely refuse to believe otherwise unless I see it on screen. And I don't think he's being sabotaged either.

Shin is way more topical and embraces the spirit of the original. Several years after Fukushima, it comes across as a little bizarre. Its not like the power plant disaster as well known as Hiroshima or Nagasaki. However, to the Japanese they are equivalent in terms of social trauma.

Shin is too political. It's a really claustrophobic thematic setting that restricts its narrative from considering more than contemporary political issues (of what is to me a foreign country). It also has a choppy edit and dialogue patter that grates quickly.
Minus One uses some politics, but as a way of touching upon universals. I was blown away by the scene where they explain that the government/military cannot officially do anything, so it will have to be the people themselves voluntarily fighting Godzilla. You just don't see that kind of appeal to common humanity in big action movies.
