NTA but I think Intolerable Cruelty is by far their worst film. Just an aggressively stupid movie in every way.

intolerable cruelty kind of self-destructs in the last third, but it has some brilliant scenes in the first half that make it at least a worthwhile watch. for all their flaws, this and ladykillers have huge saving graces to my eyes.
personally, i don't enjoy o brother where art thou (just not my cup of tea, and i don't like the fake digital coloring), hail caesar (too disjointed) and inside llewyn davis (too depressing and grey), but it's more a question of mood and taste on my part, and again as "terrible" films goes, nothing to be ashamed for by the coen brothers.

Hail Caesar was their obligatory Hollywood masturbation "tribute" full of big names meant to win praise from critics. By far their worst.

i might be wrong, but from hearing them in interviews, they don't give the impression of ever sucking up to the critics or the awards. they always seem to operate from their own genuine interests.
to me, true grit is maybe their most mainstream film, or what looks the most like a typical studio request film in their filmography, but even in that one they effortlessly drop some amazing gems in the dialogues ( ihave no idea if they were from the novel or original film though).

            Anonymous

That's funny since they famously and unreservedly squared off with the critics complaining about the lack of diversity in the film.

Hail Caesar is a very specific parody of a Hollywood fixer during the Red Scare. I agree that it's masturbatory but I still found it an enjoyable watch.

A great film, and a great tip of the hat to the fast-talking films of the 1930's.

They weren't actually all that fast talking, they were just filmed at a much lower frame rate that was converted to more modern standards and had to be sped up in the conversion process.

      people who get it
and people who don't get it

I watched it just the other day and unfortunately I have to give it a thumbs down. The romance has absolutely 0 chemistry, he's a total yutz and the girl is such a complete stock character that I was really shocked in the last half hour of the film when she gets weepy I'm apparently supposed to be rooting for the romance to succeed. I also thought the supernatural elements distracted rather than added to the story, which ultimately never really goes anywhere interesting. The actual screwball comedies this was riffing on like the Thin Man movies were just so much better. Funnier, better chemistry, and you actually cared about the characters.

Paul Newman is great, the production design is awesome as well. Though oddly its set in 1958 but everything about the design feels much more like 1938.

if you liked Hudsucker, check out Crimewave, it was written by the Coens and directed by Raimi

I had never heard of it until my bestie mentioned it and we watched. I realized I had seen the old man falling for several minutes in a gif before. The cast is great, the comedy is snappy and dark. Coen Brothers + Sam Raimi (which of course means Bruce Campbell shows up) is a fun combination. It's oddly cozy, I enjoyed it.

It's terrible, one of the worst coens and bad in a very bland way. The unfortunate thing is with everyone who is involved you'd think it's a dream team.
Probably worse than Lady Killers but it's stiff compared there. I feel like coens were told to do studio movies and flopped on those two in particular.
I think they got a redo on the concept with Hail Caesar and that was pretty good.

      Anonymous

hard disagree. i could buy someone not liking the silly and affected pastiche tone of hudsucker, but the movie is impeccably crafted.
hail caesar feels really disjointed in comparison, just a collection of ideas thrown together and that don't really gel in any particular way as a film.
and going back to hudsucker, if that's truly a "terrible" film from the coen brothers, it's at least one of the best and most original "terrible" films from otherwise good filmmakers' filmographies.

Intolerable Cruelty is barely a Coen Bros film at all. Their only real contribution was rewriting the opening scenes and B-movie tier romcom script, which is why it feels so awkward to watch

TA and I think at least intolerable cruelty has something to it as a satire of mainstream romance stories that have become the hallmark genre. There's the premise of two jaded people not looking for love and then the typical last minute twist resolving their issues happens three or four times. It's just not particularly enjoyable though.

Hudsucker is a worse How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying which is another thing that bothers me about it. My internal metric for "terrible" is that I'd be embarrassed to recommend someone to watch it, and I know that's true for Hudsucker.

            >Hudsucker is a worse How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
No, that's Secret of my Success. Hudsucker is nothing like How to Succeed, it's trying to be like a 30s screwball comedy, particularly in the central romance.

      >Several Hunzikers living in Aargau have expressed a belief that the surname descends from the traditional occupation of dog breeder (Hundezüchter) and have indicated that Hunzikers have been involved with the development of several dog breeds. This belief is supported in part by the rampant hound regularly found in Hunziker coats of arms. Another possible origin raised by some genealogists is a reference to a valley in which a Hun army camped. A valley or part thereof might be referred to as a corner or "ecke" in German and hence the Hun's valley would be "Hunsecke". However, these explanations appear to be speculative.
