The Last Good Trek

i just finished re-watching this. the last time I watched it was 2008-2010.

It was honestly better than I remember and infinitely better than any Trek released since. it was still preachy and leftist, but it was still good.

Why cant they make good Trek anymore?

I hated it when it came out, I hated it when I downloaded dvdrips, I hated it when I downloaded bluray rips. It seemed like the result of attempting to make “Star Trek” “relatable” to the type of people who believed iraq itself flew planes into buildings, and the only way they could figure out how to do that was to make the best and brightest humanity had to offer, all incompetent histrionic morons.

      do you like anything?

btw the pilot episode came out two weeks after 9/11. They didnt rework the entire show simply because 9/11 happened. They wanted it to have plot arcs instead of “adventure of the week” like previous Treks.

I like a lot of things. I’m never sure why not liking shit for morons makes me a joyless butthole on Cinemaphile. And phrases like “the type of people” have meaning that transcends chronology. Said type of people would have to exist before the event used to codify them, for instance.

That's only true for the last 2 seasons, it was adventure of the week for the first 2 untill the Xindi attacked earth in a big 11/9 type attack

I don't think they ever explicitly state it but it's about defining the future of what Starfleet is supposed to be, the whole show you see them struggling with exploration, running into shitstorms they can barely scrape through and then after the Xindi attack they get military personnel and Enterprise turns into a warship.
And I like that, because Starfleet being about exploration and meeting new people is a noble idea but to go from a post WW3 or even our current day politics to that would be a hard sell, the whole thing would be a military operation if we had the tech now.
And you see it personified in Archer, his whole character arc in those last 2 seasons is about not falling to revenge and a desire for war, overcoming that and having faith of the heart.

          >recover from ww3 because literal aliens provide technology and assistance, but not too much, and not too quickly
          >okay we're goin to war now guise, thanks!

you're also ignoring the, what, century or so of "slow" expansion humans had between first contact and the start off enterprise. But that also undermines everything about enterprise, as it takes them more than a season to even get to a single place "no human had gone before," and they're doing it on a luxury cruise liner compared to the ships the hard badasses used before them.

S1-2 still stinks to Berman crap, s3 is so GWoT it should be in a museum; and all the effort Coto put un proping up s4 got shat on by the disaster duo imposing that turd of a series finale.

I've tried to watch all the Trek shows but really struggled to get into the ones that were not about the Kirk Enterprise crew. Strange New Worlds has been the only other show I've enjoyed that's not TOS

ENT being the last trek I can agree, but "good" is a stretch. I guess it's good compared to whatever came after
    >Why cant they make good Trek anymore?
Because they are activists and aren't there to make Trek to begin with

The funniest thing to me about Enterprise was the Captain being a Water Polo fanboy. It's such an absurd thing to put in, the actor must have been a real life fan of it and tried to get it in.

Is that any weirder than, say, Picard larping as a detective from a 400 year old novel to relieve stress? I like how the Captains used to have bizarre quirks like that. It gave them soul.

Trip, T'pol and Phlox made Enterprise bearable. The rest of the cast was whatever. It's annoying that they're stuck in a so-so show. Would have loved to see them in DS9 or TNG instead.

T’pol was great. btw Jolene Blalock married her first husband and had 3 kids and has been a housewife for the last 21 years. She’s really great when she attends a Trek convention.

I've been debating starting this or not, having finished all trek before it except TAS. It just looks sterile with bad uniforms and the fact that everyone seems to hate it, I don't know if I want to start. It feels like it exists in a weird place between trek and nu trek.
    >why can't they make good trek anymore
They can but they choose not to. Stylistically, nutrek has fallen in love with quippy speedy dialogue which modern writers favor because it happens so quick it doesn't give the time the viewer to think about if what was said just make sense. Compare this to TOS or TNG where there can be 8 seconds of complete silence. It's like these writers all came from that era of political dramas where people walk and talk down hallways. Conversations feel transactional, just stepping stones to the next action piece.
Why is everyone either screaming or crying or smug? These writers only know three emotions, crutches which they use to hold up their paper thin storylines.
