Do Japanese people even like watanabe. He cheapens nip culture by acting as this cheap bridge btn the east and west. All his movies are cheap western views about what Japan is.

this movie is popular in japan, they like tom cruise and that Hollywood showcased some japanese culture (albeit acknowledging the goofy campy parts). However Ken Watanabe is just seen as too americanized

I guess the filmmakers thought that having a white protagonist would attract a broader audience rather than an uncivilized oriental one. The problem with having an Oriental actor in such a prominent role is that the movie wouldn't sell to middle-American viewers who wouldn't identify with an exotic Asian. The reason there are so few movies starring non-white actors is because there isn't enough profit potential for these movies. They might have been able to make a fortune on the domestic front if Tom Cruise was replaced by Ken Watanabe.

This was back when the west was majority white and the western film industry made films directed at that audience, like any other film industry would do in their part of the world.

I know this is hard for zoomies to understand, but not everything is heckin white supremacy.

      >Let me tell you something that might be a bit dangerous. I was raised in Japan. I was schooled in martial arts. I was given the title of master. They take a movie “The Last Samurai.” They have a 5-foot-2-inch little guy, whether he was straight or gay, I don’t know. I don’t care. He had never been to Japan. He doesn’t speak Japanese. He has never held a sword. They make him the Last Samurai. We got 450,000 phone calls [laughs] from everybody in the world saying, “That role was perfect for you. How did that happen?” Most of the people I know didn’t like the film and didn’t go see it. It’s just a classic example of Hollywood and the politics.

      >Most of the people I know didn’t like the film and didn’t go see it.
There's not a single person who disliked the film. Even people who are anal about Japanese history and can point out all the flaws still go "...but it was still a gret movie."

this is not even a Western view of Japan, but Hollywood one. If you have at least a superficial knowledge of Japanese history and culture, then the film becomes unwatchable.

"Samurai" is still used in the English language you moron.
Adding an 's' is just as moronic as saying "fishes" instead of "fish" which are common ESL mistakes.

"Fishes" is actually correct if you're referring to more than one kind of fish, it's called a double plural. I'm assuming you didn't learn that in public school so you're welcome for the lesson, you braindead imbecile.

If nothing else, the entire movie is a great argument for making European knight/battlefield stories have color again. Not a single dark filter anywhere, and anything that's faded looks fairly naturally so.
