Nah, It was a terrible movie. His previous Men better showed a terrorist attack than this fantasy civil war did in its film. It's a movie that thinks its smarter than it actually is. It's for idiots to opine over it like a cautionary tale that could happen while also ignoring the 2 real wars happening now. If they actually followed real wars, they'd realize how dumb a lot of the thing it presents actually are. Also, huge wasted opportunity to present different perspectives of different generations on journalism.

some of the takes Cinemaphile has been having with this movie are so moronic it's like most of you actually fell asleep during the movie. seen too many posts about this movie glorifying journalism or whatever, and injecting whatever sort of deranged murder fantasy they have into it. as if war photographers and opinion journalists are the exact same thing and the movie is glorifying journalist crusading.

Well I watched the movie and as it turns out the characters we're following are basically immoral and predatory thrill seekers looks for good opportunities to photograph brutal events, not HuffPost writers. If there was a battle going on in DC why the hell wouldn't I want these people running around and filming all the kino?

It's about losing one's humanity. The people of the country (our real irl country) getting so caught up in their polarization that they lose all sense of humanity towards others and themselves. Even the girl loses her humanity and basically becomes the villain at the end.

Taking a photograph of the President being executed to me doesn't feel like a fall in humanity, that's a justifiable capture of the moment in history. They could have shown this idea better by having the girl take a photo of Kirsten Dunst's dead body on the ground, not incidentally getting a few photos of her mid getting shot. Would have tied together well with the flashback of Dunst taking the photo of the guy getting necklaced.

Nta but I think his hissyfit is actually over the photo in the credits, which is a different one and does have the soldiers posing. Notably the journalist isn't in it so it's supposed to portray some soldiers being soldiers happy they killed the guy who they see as a traitor to their nation rather than a warning on degeneracy.

The girl doesn't lose her humanity and become the villain. She leaves Kirsten's body because Pablo Escobar reminds her why they're there. If they missed the chance to quote and take a picture of the president then she died for nothing. It's wildly obvious that she's in shock for that entire last scene too. The flick is more about trauma and desensitization than a loss of humanity, and no I don't agree that they are the same thing.

Prior to them getting to DC she already explained how she was starting to get off on it. And then during the battle she completely loses herself in the moment against her own safety because she's losing it. Then at the exact moment her mentor dies she doesn't blink an eye because her sense of humanity is gone.

That is only one sense of losing one's humanity in the movie. Because losing ones humanity is the movies main theme. That being the entire United States losing its humanity because of polarization. Political polarization of both sides. Not one side both sides. Which is why the movie kept the real life sides vague. Becaused "sides" aren't the theme of the movie. Polarization is. Extreme polarization and hatred for the other side to the point that you won't even blink an eye at seeing them dead. That is what the movie is an eye. Losing one's humanity to where you won't even blink an eye at seeing the other side of the political isle dead.

That's more desensitization than losing humanity. Someone who loses their humanity is evil, none of the journalists in the movie could be described as evil for the things they do, or the things they say because they barely say anything.

She didn't intentionally get her killed though so what the frick are you talking about? You could describe anyone in this movie as "evil" but it means nothing. The gas station guys are evil because they killed looters, the Western Forces are evil because they disregard the laws of war, the boogaloo boys are evil because they're killing minorities, Lee is evil because she didn't help the black guy getting necklaced, the President is evil because he disbanded the FBI and took a third term.

They showed her face as it happened specifically to show the LACK of shock on her face. Don't tell me you are one of those smoothbrains that needs everything spelled out for you. Like having Joel say out loud whether or not she is in shock. The character moment of explanation is right there on her face. She's indifferent to it because she's lost her humanity over the course of the movie.

Which is another mistake I see small minds make. That there was no character progression in the movie. When there clearly was. The grizzled veteran lost her nerve towards the end and the rookie lost her humanity towards the end.

In this movie the hard line conservatives and the effeminate mentally ill freaks team up to kill the authoritarian president before florida man or the ruby ridge sovereign citizens can beat them to it.

huh but the mentally ill freaks who hated guns killed the president with guns. weird.

It was clearly the Texan half of WF sho stormed DC. California's entire contribution must have been the gay snipers in winter wonderland.

California could have solo'd DC themselves if they were just fighting some chuddy national guards and secret service.

Secret service would have fricked right off after gay drumpf abolished the fbi. It would just have been security guards and mercs at that point and you know those fricks arent loyal to anything.

Then maybe they weren't real secret service just handpicked presidential praetorian since everyone wants him dead.

I do not agree with this. The Secret Service are the most die hard patriots of them all. At least when they are not trying to get laid by Columbian hookers and stiffing them on the bill while travelling abroad.

Did they have WF patches? I figured they were florida men. The WF at the end all had real official looking military stuff whereas those guys had more of a militia look.

I figured they were WF since the guys in the building seemed to be official Union military.

It was never stated who the snipers fought for.

True. But they were uniformed. Like official government soldiers would be. Contrasted with the attackers. Who were all wearing street clothes under their tactical gear.

The odd arrangement of states and alliances, along with the ambiguity of details regarding how it started, was all part of Alex Garland's intent to keep the movie as far from current reality as possible to prevent extremists on both political spectrums from claiming the movir as their own.

More or less. It was specifically created in a way to keep current real world politics from becoming a distraction from what it is trying to say. If the movie had actually had real right and left sides it would have been a disaster on all fronts. Creatively, thematically and practically.

Look, I'm an Aussie, and I enjoyed the movie while also understanding this. I think non-US viewers enjoyed it more due to that outsider view element.
