Same reason every show eventually gets canceled: diminishing returns. Bad enough you have to pay Tim Allen an extortionistic salary but then every fricking co-star and side character starts thinking they're the straw that stirs the drink and suddenly Patricia "literally who" Richardson is turning her nose up at a million dollars per episode because she has delusions of grandeur and the little shits playing the kids are also asking for obscene money or bailing because they think they have a move career waiting for them or something.

Once you have to pay everybody like they're megastars the fact that the show's a hit is almost irrelevant. Once you have enough episodes to syndicate you can end it at any time

I thought the original reason for the show being canceled was because everyone's pay was getting too high. Maybe it was just cover for this story or she just wants attention. 8 seasons is a good run. I wouldn't have wanted them to replace the character or write her off.

Would have been easy. This has happened with other shows. Hell, even on Last Man Standing they changed one of the daughters and no one gave a shit. Tim's conservative take and talent is what draws people.

        Anonymous

They changed out two of the daughters. The first time was between seasons one and two, which most people don't remember. You could almost argue they did all three since the third daughter went off to the Air Force Academy in the show and they got an Asian foreign exchange student to take her place. Obviously not the same character but still adding a young woman of similar age to fill a spot in the cast.

Terrence was paid a shit ton upfront because RDJ was a studio liability. RDJ was able to maneuver being half a million for Iron Man IF he could get some percentage off of the revenue of the success of the film. And Iron Man was super fricking successful. They redraft contracts so Howard, instead of making like 7-12m was gonna get bumped to 2-3m because that's the rate Marvel actors were getting. If you were a nobody like Hemsworth then you were coming in with less. RDJ inevitably ended up renegotiating EVERYONE's contracts based off of the power of him alone. Howard didn't have the patience to see the bigger picture. Just took his ball and went home.

That because she was asking for too much. If she was as valuable to the show as she believed she was, they would have paid her that and kept the show going. But they didn't. She was asking for more then what she was worth, and since she decided to be unreasonable, they shut down the show.

it was going to get cancelled in a season or 2 anyways because all the kids were grown up. They had already written the middle kid out of show and if it she decided to be a c**t a couple seasons earlier they would've done the same with her or pulled a fresh prince and just replace her. Her character was only important because a home needs a mom. She was likely only the 5th best character maybe less depending on how popular the kids were

The real problem was that Jonathan Taylor Thomas had left the show. They could have killed her off but with the most popular son also being gone, another season likely would have seen a ratings drop, making it no longer economically viable.

When Roseanne got pushed out of her show where she actually was the star, she gave them permission to keep the show going without her in order to save the jobs of all of the crew. Obviously Patricia Richardson didn't give a shit about any of those people.

Sports an especially bad example as the NBA is notorious for giving max contracts to players who end up being scrubs. Tim Allen is a talentless hack, proven by the fact his career completely crashed. If he was smart he would have taken a 500k pay cut, give it to Richardson. They were making 28 episodes a season. That’s $42m each (not including residuals), $42m he walked away from by being a prick. And frankly, no one on that show should have been making more than 1m an episode; that’s Seinfeld and Friends level cash and that shit show didn’t get anywhere the same ratings, or syndication popularity.

Tim Allen had more success after Home Improvement than anyone from Seinfeld or Friends did trying to follow up their shows. Tim actually had another hit TV series.
Also, Seinfeld got its ass kicked by Home Improvement so consistently in ratings that Seinfeld had to change to a different day and time slot just to not get cancelled. Seinfeld only started to do well ratings wise when it wasn't in direct competition with Home Improvement.

I hated how they would flip flop her like that. Made her inconsistent so you didn't know if she was going to contribute to the comedy or make you fricking mad. End up having to sit through a 22 minute episode of Tim going
          >what the frick did I do?
And essentially acting like the guy in webm related. Just walking around in a daze bouncing ideas off his sons on how to win their mother's affection back. family sitcoms always had to have those dramatic episodes where one of the kids gets sick or is bullied and everybody learns a lesson which really drags them down as a binge background rewatch thing
everybody loves raymond has a similar dynamic but i remember toned down a lot of those sort of episodes, and ray almost had an antagonstic relationship with his wife, being afraid of her, complaining about and trying to spend time away from her whenever he could and almost needing to trick or bribe her into fricking him

Lets put it this way. Game of Thrones topped out its ratings with 13 million viewers. Thats the highest it ever got for that show and it was a cultural phenomenon.
Home Improvement consistently pulled in 33 million viewers during its early seasons. The lowest it ever dropped to was 17.7 millions during its final season. The finale to Home Improvement pushed the viewers back up to 35 million.
