"The Northman" Director envies Medieval craftsmanship for the were aimed to please God

>“This sounds super uber-precious, but I think it’s hard to do this kind of creative work in a modern secular society because it becomes all about your ego and yourself,” Eggers said. “And I am envious — this is the horrible part — I’m envious of medieval craftsmen who are doing the work for God. And that becomes a way to … you get to be creative to celebrate something else. And also, you’re censoring yourself because it’s not about like me, me, me, me, me, me. So you say, ‘Oh, I got to rein that back because that’s not what this altar piece needs to be.’ Any worldview where everything around them is full of meaning is exciting to me, because we live in such a tiresome, lame, commercial culture now.”

except he's just being a homosexual because he has no idea how trades work at all. me me me. what? any skilled craftsman will be doing custom pieces all the time, just as it was back in the medieval era when run-of-the-mill craftsmen created armor for peasants and general infantry while the most decorated craftsmen would create custom pieces for noblemen and kings.

this homosexual is so obsessed with his presumably grassroots bullshit ideology that he can't even stop and consider the fact that what he's saying is based on nothing except pure fantasy and make-believe. there is nothing great about the medieval era compared to the modern era. and i guarantee if this homosexual had to choose one, we all know which one he would choose. he's being a noisy homosexual because he wants to be taken seriously like a philosopher except he cannot even demonstrate a basic critical thought.

I’d relate to him more if he was referencing the 50s and 60s, where a person could make an honest living making an honest, reliable product made of thick, quality materials while also feeding his family comfortably. Having everything from cars, leather, watches furniture, musical instruments, steel beams, etc made in your own country has a certain pride to it and stimulates the economy in a direct way. Forget that medieval shit though.

the goal of any society throughout history is to give the masses as prosperous a wage slave gig as humanly possible. It was also easier to be an independent cobbler or whatever kind of business owner in the 60s as well. Grocery stores used to be owned by individuals. It was better in both ways.

A lot of the products made then weren't well made, you just think they were because the only goods from the 50s remaining that aren't in landfill are the good stuff. Also, you can still buy all of those things made in your own country, assuming you live in the USA, you just don't because you're lazy and you words are louder than your actions.

I actually bought my first pair of made in USA running shoes a few years ago (Sense of Motion is the company, damn fine shoes) and am saving up for a pair of Red Wing moc toes and a watch with an Ameriquartz movement. But I wouldn’t consider any of those items as affordable consumer products either. When all but a few leather and watch movement companies were put out of business and the infrastructure of their suppliers messed up because they have less clientele, what should be affordable products become luxury products. Still gonna buy all that I can afford, though.

Imagine speaking to two craftsmen, the first you ask, what you are doing? And he says "man I keep pilling up bricks after bricks everyday, my back hurts, my fingers sores, I just want to go home", and then you ask the same question to the other guy and he says "I'm building a house of God".

One is diminutive, the other is greater than oneself, but still built by oneself, so it comes from oneself to surpass oneself, ergo transcendental.

Directors like him are far and few between. Anyone who actually holds these views would never touch a film set if their life depended on it. And yet he's made three features so far, which for the most part were accurate and faithful to his vision. Major respect. I assume he's the exception that proves the rule, but it would be nice if more actually creative, intelligent, passionate if spergy / shy / autistic directors got to make high budget films in the future.

It's kind of worse than that. They think they're the subversive underground counterculture by pretending to worship a mostly third-world religion with billions of adherents that's definitely not, in any way, opposed to where the world is going. Many accuse them of being gatekeeping shills, and I'm starting to view them that way too. It's like watching people who work at Target flex their Target credit cards and Target uniforms and then harp on about how they're so anti-globalist, anti-corporate, anti-consumerist. No you're not, b***h. You're neck deep in it. You're a living embodiment of it.
