His killing was the beginning of the end of Dexter being an interesting show. Doakes was the only one in the station who posed a real threat to Dexter and killing him off especially so easily, made for a less interesting show. The actor probably wanted to get paid more so they killed him off would be my guess.
They were in a bind when it comes to Doakes if you think about it. Doing the "Doakes is going to catch Dexter" story early means it removes one of the best parts of the show, but continuing to tease it means Doakes looks like a weak b***h and thus ruins what makes Doakes a good character. It would have been better if Doakes didn't hate Dexter from the beginning of the show so they could lead into him finding out in in season 4 or 5.
They definitely should’ve held onto him longer. He was the only person who was even remotely suspicious of Dexter to begin with and the only one who stood as a real threat. It’s like if L died in the first few episodes of death note and then the rest of the series was just about the regular police trying to catch light while he goes through a series of different love interests. I guess there’s a reason Dexter is such a popular show with women.
