every show needs an attractive girl to fill in the boring parts. even if the show is going poorly, you'll still tune in because you'll be guaranteed to see more of the hot girl in it. need to pad run time? just add in a scene of her doing something 'inadvertedly' sexy.

That's literally how Star Trek is supposed to be you fricking moron.
Episodic explorations of one or two ideas or characters at a time, and then moving on. It's fricking comfy. It might have a general meta narrative over the course of seasons, but not some gay Nu-Trek universally important plot over the course of a 10 hour shitty movie.

And that's a good thing, you fricking cretins.

new Orville season? Nice! Unfortunately the first two seasons were the sort that just made me more annoyed the more I thought about them.

What kind of society are we living in where an episode about giving a baby a sex change can be aired on TV? Imagine if that had come out in the 80s.

The downward slope continues and I wonder if McFarlane himself is self-aware enough to see how far the nature of the 'ethical dilemmas' that the public responds to have fallen since the 80s alone.

He went so hard against the 'isolated backwards christians' trope that by S2 he was making the focus of the 'backward religious civilization of the week' a bunch of capricorn-obsessed astrologers.

so while I did enjoy seeing a series that feels like star trek, it was not comfortable to see how far society's standards have fallen.

      tl;dr I must concur with

Out here in the real world, no one watches garbage like Orville.

Nice post. The Orville is Star Trek methadone, it satisfies the cravings for slower paced shooting, evenly lit scifi series with a relatable crew of characters. But agreed that many of the morality plays it attempts are shallow at best or nonsense/ideological delusion at best. The last ep I watched they opened relations with some femdom culture by lying and pretending the women run the Orville to, yknow, relate to their culture. When the aliens discover the thin ruse they are understandably offended and then Seth says its cool because the first officer cucked him in their relationship but they still trust each other. I mean what the frick is this even supposed to be about? Trek was good because it had an objective, logical and usually consistent moral framework that mirrored societys ideal at the time. The Orville is what TNG looks like written my shallow redditors soaked in moral relativism and bizarre sexuality.

          Yes. Why not?

And then I'd want a new toaster, preferably one that won't spontaneously become sentient and accidentally enslaved to my toast consuming needs.
In fact, I'd -ask- the sentient toaster to help me design a new toaster, one that makes toast just as good as it did but without the chance of sudden sapience, so as to prevent the same from happening in the future.

In the end I end up with delicious toast again, piece of mind and Toaster gets its freedom. Everyone wins in the end.

Alara wasn't being "setup" with Lamar, it was just some random flavour/fanservice in the alternative timeline episode and was written long after Seth had moved on from her.
Lamarr/Talla this season is clearly the writers struggling to find b-plots or something interesting for them to do due to the focus being elsewhere.
This whole season they've basically done nothing of importance in the main plotlines and if they didn't have their sub-plot together they'd have about 5 lines of dialogue per episode combined.

Yeah. The old lady should have known better. It’s more honorable to keep doing it the hard way and not get her involved than seize that opportunity and put an innocent girl in jeopardy. It would have been better had the old woman not told her anything and the torturer did his job only to be convinced that they made a mistake by assuming that she had the info and turn on that intelligence guy when he gives the order to kill her. Torturer guy really seemed like he didn’t want to harm her. He seemed saddened that she didn’t give him the info, thus forcing him to go through with his job.

Female moclans had to form their own society because they are persecuted on the moclan homeworld. The moclan girls were wondering if Bortus and the commander (a female) were mates.

I was thinking something like that during that scene. Classic Supervillain Blunder - Kill the family, spare the child, the child grows up and comes back for revenge. He was spared instead of rightfully murdered and will relay that shit back to the homeworld and the war will become 3-way now that Moclans are out.

It's funny though because in the early seasons/episodes, it felt like a decent show that was shoehorning in SJW shit sometimes(and it kinda was), but now after this episode it essentially called them fricked up and the bad guys for doing the gender changes. It's the most Star Trek shit I've seen since Voyager/DS9.

TNG: It is not up to us to judge other cultures. We should not interfere.

ORV: Either they adopt our beliefs or we kick them out.

This is exactly like the “left” in the US now. 30 years ago I considered myself center left - concerned about working people, wanting freedom to express oneself, and respecting other cultures despite disagreeing with them. Now it’s basically hating white males and trying to destroy those who disagree. Plus indoctrinating children.

The one where Picard and Beverly are captured and can read each other’s minds.

In that case, the planet itself had not unified to the level of one government with no intra-planet fighting. This makes sense because you wouldn’t want to have to deal with two or more governments of one planet. (In reality I think world government is a horrific idea, but it is a requirement of the Federation)

What does this moclan gender shit even mean?
Here in the real world "females" are the individuals of a species that produce larger gametes. If all members of a species produce gametes of the same size the distinction doesn't make sense.
But of course moclans do have males and females, does it mean female moclans produce larger non-viable gametes? But it doesn't make sense that this could be changed surgically especially not with cutting something off, as it is implied in this episode.
The show seems to want to make it about a physiological difference, does that mean that moclan "females" are just males with a genital abnormality?
Is this just the equivalent of a human being born with a superfluous third nipple?

Overall great episode. Glad to see a return of quality after the disaster of last week.
    ...
When it started I saw it was the Moclans, and was kinda like... "Really? Again". Then they went to the camp, which was comfy in their cartoonish way. I was happy enough that it wasn't just internal drama back on the ship.
    ...
Then Heveena tries to get Topa to do spy shit. The moment was like "Damn, that leader isn't just some saccharine cartoon". I can now visualize her backstabbing a political rival while pretending it was justified.
    ...
A lesser show would have let Heveena get away with it. She would have never been called out on it. Orville applied its A-game to this aspect and let Mercer call her out on it quickly.
    ...
Whether intentional or not, it was a bit poetic that Mercer pulls the same manipulation. Heveena had exploited Topa's starry-eyed fandom to exploit her, so Mercer struck Heveena with a Dolly bomb. Would a real politician have been so easily swayed by an emotional plea? Maybe not, but Heveena has existed for all of two episodes, so she's still being written.
    ...
The kidnapping and torture... Yeah, this was a damsel in distress situation, done for pathos. A part of me could feel incoming catharsis. That part of me kinda wanted Bortus to spend more time beating the shit out of more Moclans.
    ...
The retuning politics. From a story standpoint, I can see why they brought Topa in to show the government, and how that would sway a fictional story. After years of seeing real politics, somehow it's hard to imagine it actually swaying anyone. Any politician that isn't secretly a sociopath just no longer seems realistic somehow. I guess I need to look past that and let Orville be an idealized future.
    ...
Klyden's return... I was glad when he was removed. Credit to the skill of the actor, he made Klyden easy to hate, so I was glad he was out of the picture. I don't really want the season to have another Klyden episode.

I was surprised the response was to kick the Moclans out. I figured what happened would jsut shut the Moclans up and go back to being tense allies, basically an 'episode reset'. Will be interesting to see what they do with that.

In the context of the whole Kaylon war, this season they've lost the two allies they spend all those past episodes trying to acquire.

Seems like they have 4 options going forward:

        1. The alliances were less important than they had seemed.
        2. The Moclan and Krill come crawling back because of reasons.
        3. The Earth and Union are destroyed.
        4. Just leave the war unresolved as if for a future season.

Is anyone else fricking SICK of time travel in sci-fi? Obviously you've got Doctor Who but that doesn't really count, but Stargate and Atlantis both overused it, Orville done it multiple times now, just about every star trek series has used it.

      >After years of seeing real politics, somehow it's hard to imagine it actually swaying anyone.
I think that is where the scene with Gordon scoffing comes in.
It straight up tells us that the Moclans have been strong arming the Union into getting their way since forever, and that on the political stage no-one could do anything about it.
When the council all stands up, maybe some of them do actually stand up because it was the right thing to do, but it was also the perfect opportunity to remove the stranglehold the Moclans had on Union politics.

It reminds me of the stranglehold the Vulcans had on humanity's development in space in Enterprise. I don't think Star Trek has ever explored the idea of expulsion from the Federation.

Last week's terrible episode also included the seed of a weapon to use against the Keylon. When they weren't abusing Isaac with unsolicited brain surgery, there was the alien scientist that is formulating a plan to make the Kaylon all feel guilty.

Thats what i mean i fear that is the route they will be going. Season 4 first episodes would be about the Kaylon " civil war " and after that the " Demon " aliens as the new Antogonist threatening the Krill who will need help from the Union.

Even though Orville has a lot of good episodes, especially this season, they overall have kinda a weak spot when it comes to the galaxy lore. They have this habit of introducing some info about one of their member planets, and then immediately making them central to the plot, while mostly ignoring the rest of the vast vast galaxy. Once they resolve the plotline, they'll be back to zero like the series is barely starting.

                Anonymous

Yeah i recognized that too. And i can hardly believe that there is a war going on where they fight against their extinction. Its like they go about their usual daily business instead of fighting for every colony and planet.
I mean we heard Admiral Halsey talking about Battlegroups etc but we have no idea about the scale of it all or how it effects the Union in general.

I think the idea is that the Kaylon are biding their time for some reason and not actively attacking. The Union is being vigilant and preparing, but there's no active war except the rare battles where the Kaylon want something specific like when they try to steal the time travel device.

I disagree with the whole idea of having high stakes like war or putting Earth in danger. We've seen it far too many times by now. If you're going to keep threatening Earth, then it's time to just go ahead and let it be destroyed. Not just Orville, but all of sci-fi at this point. Stop threatening the galaxy if you're not really willing to destroy it.

The sandwich was sent from the prime timeline to a place in that same timeline.
If the sandwich never returns, it means that Gordon's family is in a splintered timeline.
If some other flavor of sandwich returns, it means there are at the end of a cascade of splintered timelines caused by Gordon's time travel, and that multiple versions exist across the multiverse.
If the normal sandwich returns, it neither confirms nor denies anything.

                >I hope that The Orville never feels like we’re on a soapbox. That’s never our intention — our intention is to entertain and to begin a thoughtful conversation. But for this episode, at least, it seems as though that’s been the general reaction. People have taken it as a character story that is allegorical — it takes place in this alien world — but is also the impetus of a much more human conversation.
                >You want to make sure you’re starting that conversation without yelling at people, much as we’d all love to. It’s just not the way to tell a story. You have to be nuanced. It has to organically inject itself into the larger story that you’re telling. It’s to make your point and to put forth your thesis. So to speak without preaching is a real Goldilocks zone. And that takes a lot of time, too, with a lot of talented writers, to figure out. And certainly, I’m lucky enough to work with a lot of them.
Seth isn't hiding his own politics, but a good Trek story allows multiple interpretations instead of just the libtard one.

Why didn't Gordon try to kill Ed with the phaser? Like, if my best friend I hadn't seen in 10 year showed up and said "I am going to erase your family from existence" I'd kill him. My family is more important to me than my friends, especially one that I hadn't seen in a decade and that didn't even belong in that timer period, meaning I could vaporize the body and there'd be no suspicion from local authorities. What's the worst case scenario? The rest of the crew goes and erases my family anyways? It just seemed unrealistic; Gordon was reacting like a man who hadn't seen his friend in weeks, not a man who had been living with his family for a decade.

I assumed that the high setting of the device combined with it being jammed directly in his eye would scramble his brain enough that he won't remember the details or won't be able to communicate them. He specifically mentioned the higher settings can leave permanent neurological damage, and your eyes are basically a direct path to the brain.

they did say enough power will frick up your brain.
also, even if they got the name of the guy on the planet helping, the bigger issue is the that the union is now protecting the chick planet.

Kelly is married to Gordon irl but I can imagine he offered them both roles if he could ass blast her

that was true, but they broke up (broke up twice actually, but the first time they went back and tried again later)

          >No alien Admirals
wtf is the Union secretly racist

Look at the crowd in the "union council", it's 95% humans in uniforms. Seems like Humans do all the work barring a handful of tokens. Reminds me of in DS9 when Sisko once talked about the Dominion war being fought by Humans, Klingons and Romulans, and utterly forgot about the rest of the federation, including multiple species who were in his own crew.
