The 90s was mostly 70s nostalgia.

The 10s/20s 90's nostalgia is super weird because it jumped right from 1985 to 1996. Skipped straight over the Genesis and went to the Playstation.

I hated both back in the day but in the past 3 years nu-metal has grown on me, same with Jackass which I used to despise. I guess it's because I lost the best job I ever had in '21 and had to move back in with my parents. The edgy irreverence somehow makes the day-to-day somewhat manageable but that may be a side effect to budding alcoholism.

I was born in the 70's and we had a much richer library of media than is available to the current day audience, we actually knew who actors and singers were who had died before we were born because their music and movies were still playing.

There wasn't really 50's nostalgia in the 80's because things were generally better than in the 50's.

80's was peak for pop music, 80's rock, blockbusters and television like Miami Vice, it was a really fun time.

Late 70s to mid 80s had lots of 50s nostalgia (Laverne and Shirley, Peggy Sue Got Married, Back to the Future, Shanana, Eddie and the Cruisers)
Late 80s to early 90s had lots of 60s nostalgia. (China Beach, Wonder Years, Quantum Leap, bunch of hippie movies).

Nobody has real nostalgia for the previous decade, numbnuts. Real nostalgia is when you hit your mid 30s and realise you're not a child or 'young adult' anymore, you're not even young at all. no longer part of the 'youth'. So you start thinking about when you were a child or teenager 15-20 years ago and how you didn't have to worry about life back then. That's real nostalgia.

People who gew up in the nineties and the turn of the millennium have only just became adults with actual power, and those getting charge of entertainment and fashion are mining their generations nostalgia for ""new"" content.
That's why everything now is a throwback to the 90s/2000s.
That's why retro throwback nostalgia always runs in 30ish year cycles.

I think it's something very much of the time and that you had to experience it when it was happening because it's very representative of the culture of its day.
I started watching it around 1988 when satellite television came to the UK in a big way and caught the Megapowers run and a really fun time in wrestling. Everyone in wrestling was either permanently coked off their breasts or coked off their breasts and on massive amounts of steroids and wrestling was just really fun and about the spectacle.
I started watching again during the Monday night wars and it was fun and degenerate and became much more story driven and entertaining.
Now it just seems very corporate and the people involved are professional actors/athletes rather than the kind of off the street lunatics and freaks it seemed to attract back in the day.
They're probably bigger degenerates than ever but they hide it all behind the scenes.

You ask what trends are unanimous across atomized sub cultures and I told you. Trends/culture is something dictated by children you know, adults have jobs and families to take care so they mentally settle into whatever the culture was when they were growing up.

Legitimate oldgay here. I recognized greatest in the Rock way before his popularity really took off. I remember back in like 1997 the Nation of Domination walking to the ring and me and my filipino homies were the only ones in the arena standing with our fists in the air.

Biden-voters, like this guy, are evil morons, and I'm tired of pretending that they're not.

It seems unfair that he gets to be a wrestler whenever he wants and all these other people actually have to wait around and work for it

I'm sick of stuff being marketed as new when it's just nostalgia-bait or remakes/reboots over and over.

No, I don't want to watch the 10th reboot of Jurassic Park or "What if X-Men existed in the 70s?"

It's commonly said on the internet that culture kind of froze and staggered to a stop sometime around 2008 - 2012, no longer developing as rapidly as it did in the 20th century, with subcultures seemingly being wiped out and no longer being as distinct a phenomenon.

If there is also the 20 year nostalgia cycle, what happens when we reach the end of this decade? Will it start becoming a weird feedback loop? An ouroboros of cultural trash?
