Does it live up to its name as one of the best movies ever made?
A friend showed it to me for the first time and whilst watching I was kind of like meh until the film went on and I began to warm to the characters. It was the first time I saw Tim Robbins in anything other than Jacob’s Ladder and I also loved Morgan Freeman as himself (but great). Clancy Jones is great as always as a sadistic hardass edgelord. I also loved James Whitmore in the movie and his parallel with Jake the crow.
I dunno, there was something classically American about it, kinda Mark Twain-esque storytelling and it moved me a lot.
My score: 8.4
What does Cinemaphile think?
>there was something classically American about it
because stephen king wrote it, people shit talk him and call him the mcdonalds of lit, but when he goes we'll lose something
Isn’t it only loosely based off some short story of his?
Most of the great Stephen King adaptations are loosely based off his work because Stephen King is a hack.
It's based off his novella and follows the plot almost exactly. The biggest change is that Morgan Freeman's character is a redheaded Irishman in the story, hence the name "Red."

why did his friends let him get raped for years
>best movies ever made
its certainly no robocop but its decent, solid 7/10
I miss when robocop was universally loved on Cinemaphile. It's still my favourite.
I remember catching re-runs of it on AMC as a kid back in the day, so it's always been one of my favorites. Just a really beautiful story on the human spirit and making the best of a situation even when it wasn't your fault. The soundtrack always hits me in the feels, too.
The only movie I've ever seen with no women in it.
Don't you see the wardens wife?
Watch Master & Commander
I love how they handled Andy and Red's friendship. One of the few movies that really has a nice bromance between two straight guys.
>bromance
Shut the frick up homosexual.
Just fricking end it
I relate a lot to Andy's unyielding, stoic patience in the face of adversity. There's a lot of iconic scenes in this one.
The "invisible coat" line always stuck with me.
looks kinda humble for a prison
>no orange jumpsuits with tattooed roidmonkeys everywhere
>not playing basketball with loud yelling at each other and pushing aka the chimp rituals
>no mullato gang staring down everyone from the corner
It's set in the 30s or 40s iirc, that's why
didn't Black folk used to commit crime back then ?
Yeah but the prison culture was way different back then
I really love when Andy and fellow prisoners first got drove to prison,The camera showed Shawshank from the sky and the music in that scene made me feel something so free and full of hope it was really nice
It's peak reddit
go back
It's a movie that I re-watch once or twice a year. It's nothing deep or thought-provoking, but it stays entertaining for the whole runtime.
true hopekino
Great movie
One of my favourite films, really timeless story about human perseverance and comradery, very wholesome and good heated.
Why is a Blackman called Red?
Loved the ass rape, very hot.
was the bussy worth it for boggs?
its an ok afternoon movie, I never got the hype
for me its the family guy parody
why did they keep rejecting red
he had to spend all those extra years in prison because he said some things slightly wrong in the interview?
Institutionalized systematic racism, not even memeing
so it was just the new generation of people that let him out? wow
how many zoomers take this racism shit now and I love zoomers for that ,they have open minds ,my grandson had a Black person girlfriend
>girlfriend
>not a wife
Your grandson had a Black person bawd empty his balls then married a white woman like a normal person
They never released him because he was only saying things he thought the parole board wanted to hear. By the end, he had grown weary of the system and had lost any sort of impetus for trouble that the board finally considered him to be of no risk.
It's my fav movie. Well made, comfy, great acting, memorable lines, nice score, and the ending makes you feel great every time.
its a perfect example of how important a good ending is in a movie, without the perfect end it'd just be a good film, but the payoff is what makes the whole thing
