The state of DC comics

It genuinely depresses me. I've been a DC fan my whole life, and the current DC era is so bad that the only thing I'm reading is Mark Waid's (admittedly great) ongoing.

Tom Taylor was the beginning of the end

Green Lantern and Green Lantern War Journal are both good.

Birds of Prey has been good.
        Wonder Woman has been good.
I liked Superman: Lost, despite the stupid ending.

And I say that as someone who dropped everything during the N52 era and bit hard on rebirth. It’s absurd to suggest sales wise or quality wise that they aren’t the worst they’ve ever been. Almost every book is unreadable. Not even just droppable/skippable but so offensive and awful I don’t even hateread them anymore.

Alright jackoff, you wanna hear my critiques?

              >Superman: Lost
I don't like it because the dialog reads like two people having a separate conversation at all times, the Green Lantern of the story got away with literal murder, the ending was as hand-waving as it possibly gets, and Priest's Luthor may be the most inaccurate portrayal of the character in a long while. The art isn't good either.

              >Alan Scott: Green Lantern
Nothing innovative. Just a boring, by-the-numbers story with Alan lamenting over sailor dick he got in double-ya-double-ya two. Doiby also looks like shit.

              >Green Lantern: War Journal
Mosaic-lite. All the "bite" John had being a metaphysical architect was thrown out the window long ago, and the book decides to pursue the boring characterization Geoff Johns gave him instead. The supporting characters continue to be John Stewarts' crutch.

Revisionist nonsense. Cinemaphile voted Forever Evil the best book of 2013. There was a lot of hype around most of those books.

Yeah, I prefer DC 10 years ago. Some of it didn’t work but on average it felt like more hits than misses. And sometimes you’d get those few books that came out of nowhere and were somewhat under the radar but turned out to be great.

New 52 was a botched and half-assed initiative, but it still had a lot of gems. That whole era genuinely had me excited and even if it ultimately it was a botched experiment, we got a lot of good comics out of it. The same cannot be said for current DC. Not even close. There is almost no good to outweigh (or even balance) the massive drop in overall quality.

Deboot, have an editorial structure that strictly adheres to continuity, bring some actual good names to helm it and do some scouting for actual good writers. Stop hiring homosexual artists who want to draw all the guys as gayfaced twinks and all the women as bearish men. Shunt all of the current shit off into its own universe and deboot everything to something resembling post-Infinite Crisis but with fixes as needed (no OYL, Ted's death undone, etc.).

They could always just start with new number 1s for all the books and tell the majority of their stories on a new Earth. Kind of like what they did when the Golden Age transitioned to the Silver Age. There wasn’t an official reboot or Crisis event, they just kept the heroes that were still successful going and revamped or recreated the rest (along with new creations). Imagine being able to read Superman #1 or Batman #1 and actually have it be the beginning. And if you want to bring older versions of those characters you could do a Flash of Two Worlds story every now and then. None of this has to be as hard as modern DC makes it.

The tough part is finding the right people, but even that can be accomplished with some forethought.

There, I’m buying like 2 or three books just based on that change.

Batman written as competent and by someone who doesn’t want to “leave their mark” on the character and just wants him to fight organized crime and costumed freaks in short but sweet arcs.

No more story arcs on any books that are longer than 4 issues. At all. B-plots can develop but must be paid off within a year.

No more writers on books for longer than 24 issues and 2 annuals.

Wonder Woman written by someone who failed women’s lit and hates modern feminism.

Green lantern by someone who understands John is milquetoast and wants Hal to be the lead.

Aquaman by someone who doesn’t want to write him as momoa and an artist who won’t give him a beard and long (or dark) hair.

Ship Martian man hunter off with the LOSH or JSA and replace him with GA Sandman or Saturn girl. JLA is the traditional 6 other members.

Wally gets the solo flash book but Barry gets the JLA spot and basically leads the book.

Stop pushing green arrow and canary. They’re not on the league and show up sparingly in other books. Nobody cares about them.

No more mini series. If you just shorten the story arcs there is no need for a mini series to exist.

        >They’ve been sabotaged from within by people who hate the very concept of capes and think the fans need to be force fed a bunch of pseudo intellectual or progressive idpol shit they DO NOT WANT.

That's mainly because the writers and editors were ANAD Marvel rejects that politically ransacked the company.
They pushed/canceled out the old gaurd (again) and didn't learn from their mistakes (again). And those who didn't get canceled became lesser versions of themselves (Tom Taylor and King)
All of the old gaurd decided to make their own publishing (i.e. Ghost Machine, Substack, even the Rippaverse etc). And to top it all off, these writers are willing to work for pennies if that means keeping the IPs out of "the wrong hands" just out of pure spite.
At this point its all out of pur pride and arrogance. Yet they haven't noticed the world has moved on from them. Now everyone reads manga. A genre the west has no influence over, unless it's the localizer, which japan has caught on to and replaced them with AI atp.

I'm not saying I personally liked any of their work before all this fiasco, I'm saying that those two had to be held back to become the people they truly wanted to be from the start. As much as I hated Didio, at least he had enough of a frontal lobe to stop the Toms bullshit that they're getting away with now.

The first 6-8 months of Rebirth was a shining utopia that was squandered by the time Metal was even in full swing. But it was great while it lasted. Superman, Super Sons, Trinity, Aquaman were all spectacular. hell even the first few arcs of King’s (the I AM trilogy) was serviceable. The action comics doomsday fight went on too long but it was a fun - if entirely too decompressed - read. I just wish they let Superman and Batman have their trunks for that era rather than later on when it all went to shit.

The company is definitely a wash right now. However, you can still go back and read and watch all the good shit from over the years. That's what I've been doing and it's kind of fun.

I agree. Rebirth showed astonishing promise for that first year or so. I don't think people blame Geoff Johns enough. Didio gets all the hate but Johns absolutely shitting the bed with Doomsday wiener and Three Jokers, after years of build-up only for them to amount to nothing, was what really killed all the Rebirth momentum full-stop.

Johns only shit the bed with Doomsday Clock AFTER Didio decided to force him to wrap everything up early so that Didiot and Bendis could reboot DC again into 5G which didn't happen becaue Didio got himself fired. And this isn't even mention Didio firing Jurgens/Tomasi from the Superbooks for Bendis and also giving Bendis LOSH to lead into 5G.

Johns got majorly fricked by Dan from the get-go.

I agree that Didio's meddling clearly affected things, but I am no longer willing to give Geoff Johns the benefit of the doubt on anything. His name's on the cover. He was Chief Creative Officer, for God's sake. He could've delivered *something*.

How? He never had control over publishing and editorial (being CCO only covered movies/gamese/tv/cartoons) and on the other side you had Didio there screaming at the employees to implement 5G. The only reason DC went with Rebirth in the first place was because Didio shit the bed with Convergence and DCYou and Johns was still considered at the time DC's top writer, but once Didio decided to bring in Bendis and his coterie of wienersuckers to demolish Rebirth for 5G, it was fricking over.

Three jokers is a moronic idea on it’s face and had nothing to do with what people enjoyed about rebirth. Doomsday clock being turned from “watchmen bad, hope and optimism good” to “boo hoo trump won no more hope allowed so now I’ll try to write watchmen 2” was what killed his momentum.

But the glut and focus on Metal is what killed Rebirth, it was a repudiation of everything rebirth was doing.

Doomsday Clock wasn't an anti-Trump tantrum, it was a radical centrist "both sides bad, why can't we all just get along" plea which put Johns all by his lonesome and disliked by everyone.

                That's a shill

I mean I go to my local comic shop and stay in touch with the owner of my old LCS who says he has to get rid of his collectibles section to make more room for comics because the demand is so high, but yeah I also read Rich’s top 10 best selling comics from shops all over the country because I’m curious what books are overall selling well and understand that where I live isn’t the entire country and there’s a whole big world out there outside mommy’s basement?
                >and DC books are consistently at least half of those top 10 books every week

They pop up in every thread to defend DC's shitty comics and call people homophobes for not liking the gay shit. I feel sorry for anyone falling for that obvious corporate payed piece of shit.

                1. There’s absolutely nothing random about picking a month that was just a handful outside of when new52 launched
                2. DC selling well shortly after new52 launched doesn’t discount that DC is selling as well as anything else in the industry at the moment, which is what the original claim was, that DC sales were in the toilet.

Your claim was that this era of comics was and is infinitely better than anything the Nu52 put out both in quality and quantity (according to your LCS). Even if you back one year, DC sales are still in the toilet. So now what?

                >Your claim was that this era of comics was and is infinitely better than anything the Nu52 put out both in quality and quantity (according to your LCS
Yeah, I never said any of that you’re either schizo or confusing me with another anon. I said that my old LCS was clearing out collectibles to make room for more comics because he has a high demand for comics, I never said that had anything to do with new52 quality, it’s just comics in general. You made the claim DC sales were so bad in comparison to new52 they won’t publish sales figures anymore which is a factually incorrect statement, regardless of quality of new52 or modern comics.
                >DC sales are still in the toilet
Well if DC sales are in the toilet then sales in the entire industry are in the toilet because they’re consistently top sellers in a large demographic of LCSs.

No shit comic books sell in a comic book store?! No Way!
All my LCS have been forced to sell and trade more back issues (like nu52 and stuff before 2015) just to stay afloat. They've told me from their own mouths they loathe buying the new shit because none of it sells. They also said that the manga section has been getting larger because that's what people buy nowadays.
Whens the last time you stept into a B&N? I'll tell right now, Manga outsells comic books 10 to 1.
Nu52 wasn't great, but compared to now it's frickin Shakespeare.

Oh my frickin’ GAAAAAWD anon fine, new52 was the best thing to ever happen to DC and was so wonderful and amazing, why oh why did it have to end almost ten years ago, if only DC hadn’t abandoned it comic sales would be beating out manga like Fat Man and Little Boy, why could no one understand the depths of Dan Didio’s genius? I’m going to perform seppuku now for daring to ever suggest that DC sales were fine in this modern era. • 1 month ago
      Anonymous

The reboots would be fine if they did them correctly. Let characters age for 20-25 years then start a new young universe from the very beginning, doing new takes on old stories if necessary, but keeping nothing from the old, while letting the old universe age until people get bored with them.

There are people in threads complaining all the time about how there are no clear starting points and no endings to these stories. This would fix both those issues. Additionally, it's how it worked the first time with Earth 1 and Earth 2. The big flaw there was that there was no clear "Here is where Earth 1 starts" beginning. Crisis and Flashpoint fricked it up by doing partial in-media-res reboots and they piled failure on failure with their big retcon stories (Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis, Rebirth, Death Metal).

This might be a frickin stretch but what if we adapted to the monthly/weekly shonen magazines? A bunch of original ideas coming out of the same magazine. We would just have a DC Magazine or a Marvel magazine and maybe a magazine for older readers. Idk, im just spit ballin.

This is honestly the best option for finding new readers, you could do a cheap digital Batman, Nightwing, Robin stories then compile them in a published physical monthly Detective Comics and so forth for other characters but that would require abandoning both the collectors market and making massive changes to the local comic store model which…yeah.

I’ve been wanting something like this for years and people on Cinemaphile bring it up time to time. It can be done, ironically Shonen Jump and other magazines actually got this idea from us, as the anthology format was how comics were originally featured, the manga industry just perfected it and kept using it.

I think DC should just do a hard break with continuity and have Earth 1 be along the lines of the current Worlds Finest which plays canon fast and loose, the characters are their most recognizable and iconic, then reboot Earth 2 as a post-Crisis, pre-Flashpoint continuation for the loregays and legacygays

I grew up with and liked the Gen X heroes too, but that era and those characters are gone. Nothing can bring them back. The best we can hope for is a better class of Millennial writing.

            Jon isn't even in Superman.

That doesn’t make it any better. He needs to be de-aged and made straight for me to ever care about Superman again.

So is it just a culture war thing?

No, I’ve been saying this since before he was made bisexual. But given Taylor only did that out of spite I want it undone.

DC died when editorial decided to do a half-assed reboot halfway through Flashpoint in a hail mary attempt to save their jobs. Everything they've done over the last 13 years has been some kind of response to it until they've reached the point of "we give up" and now everything is canon no matter how contradictory and moronic that is. There's no draw or appeal to DC anymore because they've so thoroughly ruined all of their characters by making them unrecognizable so now they can only get shitty writers like Taylor and Leah who just make the problem worse.

Keep a healthy output going so that the occasional great writer can pump out a masterpiece every few years.
