It's a meaninglessness phrase. Star Wars wasn't "saved in editing" more than any other movie that underwent an editing process, and it was in no way taken from Lucas's hands to be "saved," he hired experienced editors to edit his film into what he was looking for after he was unhappy with the cut done by whatever that British guy was called, as was his role as director.
Just as it was his role to choose and direct everyone else working on his movie whom people claim did the work for Lucas because he didn't handcraft every prop and do his own acting.
