I remember back in the 90s you'd get the TV guide with the Saturday paper. They'd always have a film reviewer tell you about the films on that week. I specifically remember that this particular reviewer at that time loved Alien, loved Alien 3 as it was a return to the first film but slated Aliens for being cheesy action sclock. I've always agreed with that take.
>entire marine team dies >Ripley risks her life for newt >goes toe-to-toe with the baddest b***h alien of all time >aliens 3 comes out >AAAYYYY NONE OF WHAT YOU DID MATTERS. NEWT IS DECOMPOSING
nah I’m good
Nobody cared about Hicks or Newt. Ask any Aliens fan at the time and they'll give you that answer. The Alien universe is supposed to be a nihilistic corporate shithole, did you seriously expect a happy ending?
>Nobody cared about Hicks or Newt. Ask any Aliens fan at the time and they'll give you that answer.
That's a fricking lie, btw.
t. watched Alien 3 in cinema when it aired
There's literally nothing about the first two movies that indicates some sort of ever present nihilistic force governing their universe. The misery only started with the 3rd movie then continued with the 4th where they resurrected her to make her go through hell again. Alien 3 is an ok standalone movie but it is not the continuation of Ripley's story. She and her new family made it home just as the damn entire third act and ending showed.
No one wanted Hicks or Newt dead. It's one of most outrageous moves within Hollywood and James Cameron hated the thing upon viewing it. Their deaths were a tactic used by the Fox and the writers because they didn't have a plan to use Hicks or Newt in their 'nihilistic' dead end shitfest that is Alien 3 which clearly pales in comparison to the first two Aliens. Frick what Alien 3 did. It ruined the franchise, killed off the coolest characters that audiences were rooting for and destroyed the legacy that was left behind by two great directors. You can have your shit film anon.
They didn't need the constantly bring back Ripley to fight aliens. It shouldn't be some sort of ever present enemy she can now never get away from. They could have let her retire peacefully and brought in a new protagonist. It's what they did with Predator 2 and that was acceptable. Didn't need to constantly have Arnold come back to fight ever more Predators.
They’re both a mess of studio meddling and let’s not mistake this it was the studio who fricked this all up.
But at least resurrection had a fricking weird ass French feeling to it.
>Ripley wakes up >”welcome back Miss Ripley, there was a problem with your cryo pod, we had to keep you under for 6 years before we could get a specialist out with the parts to repair it”
Or
Just simply >six years after rescue.
There’s nothing saying it needed to happen immediately after.
The 6 year skip could’ve been interesting, we see everyone kinda moved on with their lives, and an ever paranoid Ripley is keeping her eyes open for any sign of the aliens.
Fantastically scary huh? And left open for a sequel I guess. There's a new Alien game coming out soon, no idea if Amanda will be in it.

Its the scariest media experience I've ever had. I just got a huge 4k tv and some top quality headphones.
I got the DLC where you play on the Nostromo. I turned it off. Its too much. Imagine playing it in VR.
do you reckon we'll see anything like that quality again?

The original team had to disband, so that's less likely. But I'm cautiously hopeful for the new games. One of them may have the same spirit.

I hope you are right but im very cynical.
Alien Isolation was clearly made by people who not only play games, but deeply LOVE and respect the source material. I cant think of another game since that has shown that level of care.
I was pissed off that they killed off Hicks when I first saw it as a kid but it kind of makes sense looking back. Michael Biehn was dying in everything while Sean Bean was in the process of surviving through 13 Sharpe sequels.
>It ruined the franchise
More like saved the franchise, we're lucky they didn't double down on Cameron's midwit vision and give us a bunch of sequels with precocious kids saving the day and new dumb gimmick aliens which is what would have happened
The assembly cut doesn't change the fact that the supporting cast is made up of interchangeable, bland bald guys, most of whom can't act. The assembly cut can't take away the air of cheapness that hangs over the whole film. And if Alien 3 is as you say a "pleb filter" then David Fincher must be a pleb because he hates it too.
I've never been able to figure out what pleb filter means. Does it mean it goes over people's (plebs) heads or that plebs love it and praise it. It's confusing in the same sense that a highpass lowpass filter is.
Genuinely much better than it gets credit for.
Fpbp

>cheesy
It blatantly is cheesy as frick.
no, it's touching
>slated Aliens for being cheesy action sclock. I've always agreed with that take.
This gave me a flash of anger
aaw frick you
The only true survivor of the xenomorph.
Aside from the assembly cut it's shit.
I actually prefer the original edit. The Ripley death scene has the perfect music, the Assembly cut ruins that.
I like the original for some reason too
Definitely underrated. The assembly cut's my favorite in the series.

Not entirely - the original screenplay of Alien 3 featured commie races of people who hated capitalism

What was life like back in the day? Please go into detail on different topics

Dan O'bannon certainly didn't, he never wanted the android character to be in.
No one wanted Hicks or Newt dead. It's one of most outrageous moves within Hollywood and James Cameron hated the thing upon viewing it. Alien 3 actually saved the franchise from endless sequels.
It was a blessing in disguise.
a blessing in the skies*
you guys understand they had to do this right? the actress who played newt aged 6 real life years between releases

I will take resurrection over alien 3

Why should they this isn't fricking Indiana Jones
Alien Isolation is the only canon sequel/prequel in my eyes
Just got done playing this game, i actually screamed really loud when the alien attacked me
Fantastically scary huh? And left open for a sequel I guess. There's a new Alien game coming out soon, no idea if Amanda will be in it.

>muh child survivor
Admit it, you're a fricking nonce who was angry because there was nothing but a corpse to jerk off to.
you're making it way too obvious that you're just baiting
the original screen play wasn't absolutely terrible, just impossible to produce in the late 80s, early 90s
Yeah, I worry for those that consider that TRASH as a good movie
The assembly cut doesn't change the fact that the supporting cast is made up of interchangeable, bland bald guys, most of whom can't act. >interchangeable, bland bald guys, most of whom can't act.
Holy fricking pleb.
>paul fricking mcgann
>interchangable
Anon, I don't think you know much about actors.
I've never been able to figure out what pleb filter means. Does it mean it goes over people's (plebs) heads or that plebs love it and praise it. It's confusing in the same sense that a highpass lowpass filter is.
plebs call it shit so it isn't shit because "lol plebs"
I actually like Resurrection more than 3.
You take that back right fricking now.
Anon you're moronic
nah it's just op being a homosexual again
I think Alien is near-perfect and Aliens was already a drop off but still fun to watch. Would I like Alien 3?
the radio drama of gibson's screenplay for alien 3 is much better
My favorite one.
Alien Cubed is a good movie and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
For me its the assembly edition. i give it props for trynna something new and like the whole religious symbolism and shiet
The aesthetics, tone, and themes are pretty kino, the execution? Meh.
Still much better than many give it credit for.
