The Village (2004) would have been better if the big twist

was that the monsters were real and they were living in a post apocalyptic world.

It would have been better if the moron raped the blind girl instead of letting her escape

He didnt let her escape, she outsmarted his moronic ass.

Could've been teased with the people that pick her up after escaping. The founders were all affluent, maybe they made a deal with an Ayy invasion and are tolerated on these nature reserves.

Human nature reserves and the park ranger being an alien but she can’t tell same way she can’t tell he’s modern would be cool

that was the original premise though

The plot twists are good, but the execution of the final twist was questionable.

So it’d be better if there was effectively no twist, we know.

The monsters not being real should have been the big twist all along and cut out the stupid 'weird amish cult in the woods' backstory.

So just a two-hour twist scene with no buildup? Dude, call Hollywood. You're going places...

    The movie had incredible

    -cinematography
    -music

    But a terrible script.

The script is the second best part. I love their perfect grammar and old-timey diction.

    >god-tier tension throughout the first act
    >legitimately freaky premise that taps into our most primal fear (monster in the woods)
    >awesome monster design
    >fantastic cast
    >dat monster invasion scene
    >twist happens
    >literally every iota of tension the previous hour had meticulously built instantly evaporates
    >BDH in the woods goes from nail-biting to comical as you realize she's being stalked by a costumed, moronic adrian brody
    >the next twist happens
    >yeah, we convinced governments to ban flights overtop of our forest because we're like, rich and shit
    >mfw
    >shamalamadong was coming off a streak of 6th Sense, Unbreakable and fricking Signs
this could have been his best. never have i been more disappointed in a horror movie. the fricking potential of it. 20 years later and GODDAMN IT I'M STILL MAD

that's my main gripe with it. it's legitimately creepy right up until the costume reveal. that exact moment is when the movie stops being scary. what a waste of some fantastic scenes and ideas. he could've stuffed a different twist in there, just have the damn monsters be real and not boomers in costumes

I'm willing to suspend my disbelief enough to be cool with the film's premise. I think making it a post apocalyptic thing with monsters is a bit too far though. And where's the twist?
    >Hey you know those things that look like monsters? Well guess what? They're actually monsters!!1!!

      Anonymous

the twist is that theyre not in the past, theyve been reduced to using tools from a pre electricity time because monsters destroyed civilization

        Anonymous

but that twist's already been done

  15. 2 years ago

That was more or less the original idea, but the budget forced to cut costs and change the script.

The "twist" should be that you don't know for sure if the monsters exist, if it's modern day and if the founders are in on it or not.

The "drama" between the main characters should've been the story, but the entire backdrop should've been left ambiguous and left for interpretation.

For instance the elders would inexplicably have some modern day items or some of them would be just casually shown in the background.
The monsters would be a costume, but then it would also be suggested that they actually exist if you go too far into the woods.

    Etc...

      Anonymous

he sort of tried that. while BDH is traversing the woods, someone in the village mentions that the monsters were rumored to actually exist at some point then it cuts to BDH seeing the (yet-to-be-revealed) costumed adrien brody monster. my idea for a new twist would be
      >everything happens as it does up until BDH is in the woods (costume reveal remains)
      >instead of a fence and a forest ranger, she stumbles into some kind of settlement/lair of the real, actual monsters
      >she's set upon or dragged into the darkness or whatever the frick
      >the monsters do exist
      >the founders send a sacrifice once per generation to keep them away
      >do this by using costumes of the monsters to stage a crisis that requires outside aid
that's it. no exposition dumps or dumb explanations. it's just a village in the woods dealing with nearby monsters

i am more intelligent than you

as opposed to the clever twist we got, yours is actually moronic, cultures worldwide that were known to do human sacrifices never needed some contrived story to get their population to give up a virgin to the sacrificial pyre every spring.

          it would be scarier than
          >we live on a nature preserve because we're rich and afraid of the world
scary being the goal here, with this being a horror movie
          >clever twist
it was hacky and weak and wasted some good turns from phoenix and BDH

It's on the appropriate intellectual level to respond to your moronic point.
But okay, let's drop the analogy
The third movie might be a horror movie, despite the first two movies not being horror movies, because it is a different movie, it is not the first two movies, it is a different one, a third one
Sometimes things are different, you can have 1 thing, and then a second thing, and then a third thing, and sometimes things can be similar, sometimes not
                That better europoor?

allow me to respond now that ive got my REEEEE out of the way. a supernatural psych thriller is not inherently a horror movie, but the sixth sense CLEARLY FALLS under the banner of horror. it's like arguing whether The Thing is horror or sci fi.it can be, and is, both.

I always hated Sixth Sense. Never got the appeal. And the twist is fricking stupid. So not once has he interacted with a doorknob?
He's never talked to anyone, he somehow got into the mothers house, without interacting with the door, and without talking to her, and was sitting right next to her as if they were talking but they never said a word to each other and she never acknowledged him but this never raised any suspicions for him?
The epitome and definition of dishonest filmmaking, the story would not work without the lies the filmmaking tells
    god I hate Sixth Sense.
Signs is good though, meh ending but good movie.24trt

Sixth Sense is more about the journey. the twist is moronic but it didn't QUITE break the suspension of disbelief for the majority, so it became a massive water cooler talking point. the scene at the birthday party with the angry ghost in the closet is top notch horror

I disagree, maybe. When i saw this as kid I didn't understand it fully, I felt disappointed the monsters werent real but kinda added to the depth of the film. Nowadays the scenes when she is in civilization are the best scenes.

It would be way better if after "its just normal civiliztion outside the woods" we saw the silhouetes of some alien spaceships in the background
