Denzel is a great actor and always good in his roles, there was a black guy in the Spartacus series who was also a great character in that show. I don't really have a problem with this except that it is Ridley Scott and he will make a shit movie.

Maximus' buddy in the first one was Djimon Hounsou. The real problem is Denzel is old as frick to be a gladiator

I gave it a chance and was pleasantly surprised as recently as Expeditions:Rome, but I don't trust modern writers, which is the real heart of all the woke whining.

Writers don’t have a choice a lot of the time - if they want to write the script they have to follow certain guidelines.

Times changed. These people openly admit they have an agenda constantly so there is no denying it. Perhaps it won't be woke but Hollywood has fricked up so many times you'd have to be clinically insane to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Denzel has been my favorite actor for the past 20 years but writers and producers have time and time again chosen to let quality suffer to push an agenda related to race and I have a feeling that they will do it again. Hopefully that isn't the case this time but I very much doubt it

There’s no room for it in Gladiator. My guess is that he’ll play the part of and older and wiser slave who wants to see other men get freed by training them for the arena the best he can.

      >why is this?
      Context.
A man that is beating another man on the ground looks like a bully. Even a criminal.
If you learn the man on the ground is the town rapist you will see the situation quite differently.

I'm not saying it's good or bad to jump to conclussions in this particular case. I like Denzel Washington (although I think he's a bit old for action roles, I don't know what will he play) but considering the current context of things I can understand people jumping to conclussions (i.e. Denzel being involved in some corny race bait).

I was being ironical. Mixed race casting especially in period pieces has always caused outrage among staunch racists.
My point is that the film could easily still be kino.

They were more like mercenaries, most of the africans people talk about aren't Black folk but north african like berbers or mixed populations from the surrounding areas, there were some Ethiopians but these were more like the elite of the empire so they would not be warriors, which i imagine danzel is going to be playing one

ancient slavery wasn't based on race, it was usually just all the lowlifes or POWs
and black slavery was relatively rare as they all stayed in Africa most of the time, but in Rome some did travel, mercenaries, sometimes merchants
