They're not entirely feral but their drive is predictable and they could be dealt with by sufficiently specific anti-vulpimancer tech.

I like him being an evil version of Ben that acquired different powers
It's nice to have it be established that the side characters help put ben on the right path due to his narcissism

        Anonymous

Yeah that’s a good point. I just wish they explored that more cause apparently Eon’s gauntlet is his omnitrix. I’d like to know what exactly happened to this Ben to turn him into Eon

          Anonymous

I recall hearing something about how there's probably a timeline where Ben has Eon as a transformation, meaning that the original version of Eon could still be a thing. Given all the time travel bullshittery, they could probably make it something like Eon's race was a thing, then the Ben who became Eon activated the form in an effort to save his timeline/universe, failed, and because of his actions, replace the "original Eon" and thus make both iterations effectively canon.

The reboot in general was just a textbook example of cashgrab. At least it's over now, though I wouldn't be surprised if CN will continue to ignore the original continuity in favor of more reboots and other non-canon stuff.

                Anonymous

Maybe so, but I think if you're gonna continue ben 10 after omniverse you should reboot it. a battle over the creation of the universe is as solid an endpoint as you're gonna get.
fact is, ben 10 has always been hyper-toyetic and filled with executive meddling. they just got worse at hiding it as the original continuity went on.
though that doesn't give an excuse for the reboot atrocious artstyle.

As far as I recall, the end of OV seemed to imply the next stage was a kind of roadtrip theme, basically a Dragon Ball GT kind of situation where things would go back to the style of the original series. Of course, whether this would have lasted for the entire series or just be a few seasons of Ben and friends traveling the cosmos before going back to earth, who knows. If it were up to me, I'd probably go with that concept, and have some big conflict that brews over the course of the season
And also not so subtly get rid of Kai because she's just the worst girl

They should've done more episodes where Ben has to deal with his aliens biological quirks or learn about their cultures. That was the original purpose of the Omnitirix after all but I guess that doesn't always make for a great action cartoon.

I didn't really like most of AFs shameless replacements for OS aliens but Big Chill is an exception, and he was up against Ghost Freak.

          Anonymous

I also hated the shameless replacements in AF but Big Chill is an exception. I might even say he's more imaginative than Ghostfreak because he's just an alien ghost whereas Big Chill is like an ice ghost moth/butterfly. I'd say Echo Echo is more inspired than Ditto as well.

I always saw Echo Echo as a cross between Ditto and Blitzwolfer

You can say that about a bunch of post-OS aliens. Big Chill is Ghostfreak + Arctiguana but the latter was so minor back then that it wasn't a huge deal. And I don't remember Ben using Blitzwolfer after his debut episode either. So at least by giving those powers to the central ten aliens in AF they got more regular use.

Jetray and Spidermonkey feel like they grew out of Stinkfly and XLR8. But it sucked they gave Jetray such a humanoid design unlike his concept art.

                >But it sucked they gave Jetray such a humanoid design unlike his concept art.
Bet'cha anything that was CN probably wanting the toy to be "easier" to produce and market than something that was actually cool and unique.

                Anonymous

Probably. Or maybe it was just because the most popular/most used aliens of the original series happened to generally be more humanoid so they thought they should try to emulate that in AF.

I don't know if this is a hot take but I'd have preferred if Chromastone had not existed at all because he's such a Diamondhead ripoff. The concept on the left is at least a little more unique though, a formation of floating crystals could've been interesting. Lodestar would've been a better replacement I think since he's based on a mineral too and has magnetic powers which is new for Ben at that time. Or Gravattack in his ultimate form which is a less humanoid too.

                Anonymous

Yea, was never big on that character either, was even funny how when he was "killed" by Vilgax, it was basically just to bring back the OG Diamondhead. As for all the aliens being humanoid, I imagine that probably one somewhat mandated by CN, given they made it especially clear with the reboot designs. Would even explain why the likes of Wildmutt and other animalistic aliens didn't get as much attention after OS.

                Anonymous

                >Would even explain why the likes of Wildmutt and other animalistic aliens didn't get as much attention after OS.
You know I'd never really thought about that until you brought it up but then at the same time Pokemon sells a ton of nonhumanoid toys so it's a weird decision. But then it could be a creative thing. The people working on Alien Force came from DC animation so maybe they wanted more of a traditional superhero vibe from the transformations, more in their comfort zone animation-wise, moving away from monster-like designs.

And I'm assuming the humanoid aliens that function like humans are just easier/cheaper to animate generally so they make more appearances over the weirder ones.

                Anonymous

And I forgot Eric Canete's concepts really tried to push for more bestial aliens too. These ones seem a little bit too overboard for Ben 10 but it's the general direction I prefer.

I'm a big believer in very alien looking aliens in sci fi but it's usually more expensive to pull off and creators are always worried audiences won't connect with anything that isn't a human with skin paint and light prosthetics.

                Anonymous

Well there are a bunch of those Ben 10 toys where you can swap parts, pretty sure the reboot toyline even banked heavily on that concept, so the push for largely humanoid aliens may have been for that, though hard to say. But yea, some of it was probably McDuffie and his staff being DC folk who were playing it safe with what they knew from working on Justice League and all those shows.

Yeah Skurd was created so that Bandai could sell with swappable alien parts. I never liked that idea. I like the fusions because it can lead to some really cool looks but tacking different body parts of an alien onto another never worked for me. Except for Kevin in OS and Kevin 11000 especially.

Some of the Skurd stuff was kinda fun, but yea, it was definitely a gimmick that lasted a bit longer than it should have, much like the Ultimate forms. Shame that the series pretty much just became nothing but "how can we make this alien hip and cool again for a few more months?"

The Nemetrix is only meant for non-sentient life and the auto select is based on natural predators. Sentient life can use the Nemetrix, but it results in the user's mind becoming animalistic for the rest of the transformation.

That legit seems like one good upside followed by 3 downsides. Like picking a hard counter is awesome in fights but the reason Ben and even Albedo were good fighters were because they had creativity behind their BS

Sounds like the plot of a potential episode: Ben/a main character gets the Nemetrix and it's alien transformations, but when they transform, they lose there ability to speak, leaving everyone around unsure if they're still in charge or the instincts have taken over.

That does sound pretty good. Maybe it could be Ben who’s been kidnapped by Psychobos and replaces the Omnitrix with the Nemetrix and lets him loose. Then the episode is half figuring out where Ben is and half getting him back to normal before he goes completely feral. Hell you could even bring back Phil as a supporting character since he had the thing on him for a little bit

Eh, supposedly along with humans, earth also has white lab mice and dolphins as species in the Omnitrix. I don’t think you need a civilization, you just need to meet certain criteria.

Kind of like a “all dogs have noses, but not all things with noses are dogs” kinda deal.

If you have a civilization, your species is definitely able to be in the Omnitrix. But not all species in the Omnitrix have civilizations.

Man I love seeing all the concept art from this show. I’d love to get my hands on some physical pieces one day

That'd be pretty cool to see Ben turn into an Elder Thing or Mi-Go or Yithian. I wonder what powers those aliens would have. In Lovecraft's universe, the Mi-Go phase in and out of our universe because they're from a parallel universe with different laws of physics. Yithians swap minds with people and send them into the future I think to the Yithians great library. I don't know what powers the Elder Things have in Lovecraft's universe, but iirc, they're at last psychic and can fly through space without technology.

It'd be cool to see Ben try to use some of those more exotic abilities rather than the standard ice blast or fireball or lightning bolt most of his aliens do.

I think he used it a few times, but most other times he just used his discount Omega beam because he wanted to be like Darkseid so very badly.

          Anonymous

It seemed that McDuffie learned too heavily on his experience on the DCAU when making UAF. I get writing what you know but seeing how certain concepts and characters are changed makes it seem that he looked at the model sheets and the bare essentials of their backstories/personalities and went “This is too hard and or stupid I’m just gonna make them like how DC does their characters”. And that sucks cause you get a lamer world and watered down versions of already good characters

            Anonymous

No kidding. It's part of the reason the character designs were also so hit or miss, more often miss. It was like Dwayne had no faith in himself to make something that wasn't off-brand DC.

Really is a shame, since McDuffie was a great writer. But for god knows whatever reason, he either simplified things from their OS iterations, or outright retconned things. The thing about magic being alien ki or whatever for a while was easily one of the worst changes, given it just made Gwen into cartoon Goku/not StarRaven, where it more interesting when she was just someone with an innate gift of magic that could rival the likes of Charmcaster and Hex.

Omniversebros, what about the series appeals to you? I've made it 14 episodes in and go from "huh, maybe I'll watch another one" to "I think I'm gonna just put this off for a few months". Besides the art, backgrounds, waifus, and Rook, I find it pretty underwhelming at best, and annoying at worse. When did the show suck you in and start "getting good"?

      Anonymous

I liked how casual everything was most of the time, things didn’t need to be super dramatic so when it was it was like “Oh it’s getting real now.” I also really enjoyed Ben in this, his attitude was the perfect combination of goofy fun loving guy to serious hero. It was cool to see him be more laid back against guys like Vilgax cause it makes sense that after years of doing his thing Ben just doesn’t take things as seriously as the people around him. And I enjoyed how weird the episodes could get like the And Then There Was two parter

Did the writers or show runners ever reveal anything about what their plans were for this guy? Cause I remember hearing they wanted to do something with the Forever Knights and the dragon aliens

      Anonymous

      >Dwayne McDuffie once claimed more of the species would be seen in future episodes
      >Derrick J. Wyatt said there were no plans to revisit this species in Omniverse because no one wanted to revisit that arc
Probably had something to do with Dagon. Maybe there was going to be a connection between him and the Dragons but it became too convoluted or something. I also saw a theory on this where someone speculated that Dagon wasn't going to be as villainous as he ended up being, which sort of lines up with Lovecraftian storytelling where some of the entities aren't really malevolent but them coming into contact with Humans always leads to chaos. It wouldn't be off brand for the Forever Knights to be exploiting Dagon for more power like Healing Church did with the Great Ones in Bloodborne.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Ben10/comments/mnx3xp/okay_i_have_a_theory_i_think_dagon_was_originally/

Or maybe there was no connection but the writers realized the Dagon stuff was overlapped too much with what they were planning for the Dragons so they repurposed those ideas and we got the Dagon, Forever Knights and Vilgax story. Vilgax might've actually been to blame for the change too, they were pushing him a lot in the later seasons of AF/UAF. Maybe they or the studio thought the Forever Knights couldn't carry a finale on their own.

        Anonymous

That theory makes sense especially that bit about Paradox telling Ben to not trust George. And the FK would lie about an alien threat to fit their anti alien rhetoric. It would also have been a cool twist to have the ancient elder god thing actually turn out to be the good guy or even a victim of the Knights. I don’t know how the dragons would fit into this, maybe he’s their god or something like that

          Anonymous

The Dragons could've been a little like Lovecraft's Elder Things or the Star-spawn of Cthulhu, ancient aliens that came to Earth a long time ago. They could've tied it together pretty nicely if they wanted to but like DJW said it was something they never cared to revisit. But my personal headcanon is that there is some connection there.

Maybe it was just too arcane for AF/UAF. I know they walked back the anti-magic stuff as the show went on but maybe they felt all this Eldritch stuff was going too far. Or CN even stopped them because they thought it wasn't appropriate for Ben 10.

This is why I would've been into a Gwen spinoff though because then they can explore the weirder magical side of the Ben 10 universe while still giving it a cool alien spin when needed. If they wanted to, they could've done a Kevin limited series too dealing with the alien black market and mutants more. I feel like they're sleeping on a lot of potential here.

            Anonymous

Having the dragons be aliens that inspired the legends of dragons would make sense, especially given that Dagon looks like a dragon in George’s flashback. It could’ve been too arcane but I think that it just didn’t really fit the tone of Omniverse which was a lot more lighthearted. Having spin-offs or limited series's about different characters would be great for world building

I always really loved the idea of a Ben 10000 series in the vein of Batman Beyond. Based on the OS version of course. That whole setting had great aesthetics. It'd probably be about Ken and Devin since since Ben would be too OP to use all the time. Or maybe you age up Ken and Ben is even older and has gone missing or "died" similar to what they did with Grandpa Max in early Alien Force. Just give me more cyberpunk/intergalactic Ben 10 stories. I did appreciate that they created Undertown in Omniverse though and to give us an alien environment while keeping things Earthbound.

it would had been a much better thing to do than fricking rebooting the OS

                Anonymous

It's ironic because when WB approached the Batman team about ending their show they actually wanted a tween Batman reboot that'd appeal to younger viewers. Luckily the crew threw together the Batman Beyond pitch and got that made instead. But to this day I think the whole Batman Beyond concept was a big risk for a cartoon at that time, I couldn't see CN having the guts to do that with Ben 10 unless they committed to streaming more and allowed for some movies and spinoffs similar to how they're reviving ATLA.

Wonder if they might consider doing a series that returns to the original continuity at some point now that the reboot is over. I know there's some sort of anime based on the Gwen 10 universe, and I think there's another live-action work, though who knows given how poor Race against Time and Alien Swarm were

                Anonymous

I wouldn't rule it out after they basically revisited the original continuity in Destroy All Aliens and set it after the main show iirc.

                Anonymous

Yea, I wasn't too surprised they revisited the old universe in some way, since like a lot of people, I had figured the reboot universe wasn't 100% it's own thing, just using the multiverse to start fresh. So hopefully they'll maybe take things back to the OG universe at some point. Hell, I'd be fine with just some high-production specials even. Maybe set them after Ben has finished school, and showing what he's going to do with his life.
Preferably ignoring relationship with Kai that was pushed in Omniverse, but I know that's wishful thinking after all the interference from the network

I find it funny they were more like caricatures in live action while in the cartoon they're pretty normal. There’s a theory that AF Z’Skayr is the original and the one that escaped in the original show is the copy. But it’s more likely the writers just weren’t paying attention or didn’t get the whole ectonurite “Staying alive through a stand of DNA thing”

The Z'skayr we know and love in the context of the original series was just a clone. There's a theory that the uncloaked ghostfrreak ben gets at the end of s3 of the os is the same one in af, but af writers treat him as the original and it seems they didn't know about the whole cloning aspect of ectonurites in the first place.

No, the original episode implied his weakness to sunlight was a side effect of escaping the omnitrix. He needed to possess Ben so he could use it to make himself "whole".
That plot point was completely forgotten later on, it was just assumed sunlight was the natural weakness of his species.

The only problem I have with it is that the stakes keep getting higher and higher, with so many cuts to the villains and heroes either getting new powers or revealing new parts of their incredibly detailed plans. It worries me that there’s not going to be a satisfying ending that doesn’t feel like an asspull or deus ex machina

I don’t want to start rumors but maybe that’s why he’s doing the recalibrated thing, give himself some time to go back to the drawing board. But I haven’t checked on the comic in a while so I don’t know if it’s updated yet

What’re some moments that have always stuck with you for one reason or another. For me it’s Ben turning into Big Chill and saying to the albino(?) necrofriggians “I’m one of everyone”. It’s like a perfect encapsulation of both Ben’s character and the real purpose of the omnitrix since Ben is using it to relate to another species

It’s a shame that an alien with such a unique design was so underused

      Anonymous

I remember seeing his silhouette in the Omnitrix in one of the finales and wondering who tf it was. But like some of the later OS aliens he didn't get much fanfare when he was introduced.

He'd be a cool one to see in CG or live action since his species are made of a lodestone mineral.

I can’t believe the first movie used more aliens. At least they looked cool

For tv movies most of the aliens had pretty good CGI. Race Against Time Heatblast and Alien Swarm Humungosaur were the standouts to me.

        Anonymous

I remember Diamondhead and Graymatter looking pretty good to. The only alien in RAT that looked iffy was Wildmutt, but hair physics is pretty hard to do.

          Anonymous

I'm kind of surprised they used Wildmutt for RAT over Four Arms and XLR8. But I don't know if they included aliens based on popularity. Protector of Earth definitely chose it's aliens based on popularity except for Cannonbolt and Wildvine. Maybe they were included because they were the new aliens at the time the game released? I always liked Wildvine and Cannonbolt but I don't know if they're that popular.

            Anonymous

Maybe they chose them based on how easy it was to make in cg. I can’t imagine making Fourarms would be easy with the other arms, and XLR8’s body type might not have translated well. I’d say Cannonbolt’s decently popular but Wildvine is definitely underrated, there’s a lot of versatility with his powers. And that Venus Flytrap head is killer too

              Anonymous

Functionally Wildvine is kind of like a plant Spider-Man. In the game the sound effect for his swinging is actually the same one they used for Spidey's web slinging too. I always thought he was really cool and I can see why they put him in the game given his moveset.

                Anonymous

                >Plant Spider-Man
Never thought about it but that makes sense. He’s done the swinging thing before, even laughed himself using his vines. Makes me wish there was a game where you could play as every alien, maybe a mechanic where you have to make a list of 10 aliens to use per level

                Anonymous

Maybe depending on the scenario you become a specific alien for a while in the level. It'd take away some of the fun if you don't get to choose in the story mode but there could be some kind of freeplay where you can turn into all of the mat while. Kind of like what lego games do.

Tbh a Lego Ben 10 game would be pretty cool.

A Lego game is probably the best way to get all of Ben's aliens into a single entry now that I think about it. Protector of Earth already had a bit of a Lego game vibe because of it's gameplay and structure.

Ben 10 would lend itself well to a Lego game. And those renders look really good dude

Yeah they're really well done for customs. I can imagine a Ben 10 Lego game with all of the show's aliens, maybe even across all the series. And you can have co op levels with Gwen, Max, Kevin and Rook who have abilities needed to solve specific puzzles.

Who knows. We got Lego Dimensions which had some WB/CN characters. A Lego Ben 10 game isn't impossible.

The Lego company or whoever is in charge of the games is potentially missing out on the big bucks man. With how dedicated the community is the game would sell like hot cakes

Canonbolt is definitely popular. First alien used in Alien Force, used in every version of the show, part of the reboot ten and used in every season of that show. Plus it’s easy to plan action scenes around BALL.

I haven't watched the show, but if that is how it works, then it wouldn't work. The moment I wake up I know what I just saw was fictional. Plus I know it happened while I was asleep. Plus even if something happens in a dream that seemed realistic, I know once I'm awake that it is wrong. Like, if someone were to give me a dream every night that Hitler was Jesus, I wouldn't suddenly start believing it just because it happens in my dreams.

Favorite Ben AU? Canon or fan-made, either is good.

I liked the Max Ten one, where Gwen got magic, and Ben went with tech, like a mini Tetrax.

Max tried to hide his alien hero work from his grandkids as they travelled across country, and the kids hid their knowledge of what he was doing so they could help without him worrying about it

I didn't watch it much, but is Ben in Omniverse still a teenager, or did they make him a kid again? He still has his teenager voice, but he's so short and young looking, and I could never tell. I also think they reference stuff from Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, so I guess he's older in Omniverse than those other shows. So why couldn't they make him taller instead of giving him a kid's body?

        Anonymous

He is older but there are a couple of episodes with flashbacks. Even one where him and his 11 year old self switch bodies

OV Ben looks like a teenager. He’s shorter than his partner, but then he was shorter than Kevin by a bit during AF as well. Seems like he’s just a manlet until he hits his stride in his 20s.

Well it did seem like there was almost no way to unmutate him, and he was going around killing people just for betraying him. Wasn't like Ben decided it just out of nowhere to axe Kevin before it got out of hand.
Though really, I was never too fond of the whole "Kevin's only evil when he absorbs too much energy/matter", felt kind of lazy

The show brings up a few times that when the omnitrix jumped onto Ben it’s because it was coded to Max’s DNA and Ben just happened to be the closest match. So wouldn’t that mean that even if Vilgax did get his hands on it, it wouldn’t even work?

      Anonymous

Well it's made a point that while it has various safety features it can still be tampered with so while it might not work internally if given enough time a man with his resorces could find a way to crack it.

Hard to say. If Vilgax had managed to get it with no problem, he would probably be able to use it with little issue, but I could see the watch acting up when it senses Ben or Max nearby. Of course, it's one of those things that kinda came and went with the canon. I mean, Azimuth said the watch was basically for everyone, so that all races could walk in the footsteps of their universal brethtren, and that it simply Xylene's tinkering with the watch that led to it becoming a tool for Ben (even if she meant it for Max). Then you get to UAF, and suddenly Azimuth was told about Ben years ahead of time and it was all destiny and that shebang.

That's what happens when you have like a dozen people or something all trying to drive the same car. MoA was only on minor supervision duties with everything after the original series, since they were busy with GenRex, Ultimate Spider-Man, and some other projects. McDuffie tried his best, but clearly fell into his old habits with what he did using DC material, and we all know how Wyatt was a bit too much of a nostalgiagay for his own good.

Vilgax in the og show was something else
Most of season 1 ben just steamrolls every bad guy with relative ease, but then this fricking squid comes in and tanks every hit from every alien like they are made from pillows

And the fact that Ben had to unlock his most powerful alien at the time to get rid of him just made him seem like that much more of a threat

Pretty damn sturdy, but the downside is that he still feels pain, and can't breath underwater or in space. If Ben had an alien that could store power from absorbing attacks, if he used the fusion omnitrixes that Ben 10K has, he could probably make a pretty damn formidable alien fusion.

              Anonymous

The Worst fused with anything would be formidable because you'd have the indestructability on an alien that could actually do something

                Anonymous

That is if the fused half can negate the pain, or at least alleviate some of it. But yea, combined with the right alien, and Ben could probably rival some of his most powerful aliens like Alien X, at least in terms of raw might.

The harem episode had She-Worst literally walking through molten lava. I imagine The Worst is probably even more indestructible than that

Benjamin Kirby Tennyson is the most Gary Stu OP character of fiction.

    Even more than Superman.

I hate him, I liked the first ones but this I MAKE AN UNIVERSE FROM THIN AIR is just INSULTING.

      Anonymous

It wasn't so much him making a universe out of nothing, but taking the matte of what had just been destroyed and forcing it back into the shape it previously had, with some changes

Are you talking about when Alien x remade the universe after the annihalarg blew it up? There's tons of fictional characters who can blow up universes. Blowing up universes doesn't make a character a gary stu or mary sue. Do you think Galactus is a gary stu? Or Grand Zeno in Dragon Ball Super? Or Zero Hour Hal Jordan?

        >Galactus
is a Jobber and more of a plot device than character in most stories.
        >Zero hour Hal
He's the big bad villain going against the entire DC universe in that event. After his city was destroyed, and he killed the GL corp. That's as far from a Gary Stu as possible because he was very flawed at that point.

          Anonymous

Still not seeing how Ben's a Gary Stu just because he helped remake his universe. It's not like he can just do that any time, given he has to argue with a pair of godly autists just to get their shared alien body to even do shit.

            Anonymous

I don't agree what he's a Gary Stu, either. He's got a very visible flaw with his ego.

Technically it wasn’t even Ben, it was Bellicus and Serena. All Ben did was ask them to “fix” the universe

Does it bother anyone else that when Ben revives the petrosapians they all look like Diamondhead? Like I get they’re rock people, but shouldn’t there be some kind of variation between all of them?

Yeah that seems to be the case with UAF. Even though we see in Tetrax’s flashback other Petrosapians they do look different

I figured realistically they'd be all shapes, sizes and colors but the Tetrax looking variants are the more powerful of the bunch. Like all of Ben's aliens are like peak versions of their species.

It’s a little embarrassing to admit since I’m big into cryptids. But I never realized that the name of Shocksquatch’s species (Gimlinopithecus) is a reference to the Patterson-Gimlin footage.
