They were ok for their time. The constant rehashes were infinitely worse.

You think those are the bottom of the barrel? I'm continue to be astonished that people look back on derivative crap like Laff-a-lympics fondly.

Correct. They were low effort, barely animated, slops. To compare The Flinstons with The Simpsons is like comparing liquid shit with liquid gold, and yet they were similarly successful. I don't get how this is even possible.

Hannah Barbera didn’t work for the audience, they worked for the tv stations who simply needed cartoons to fill their channel. They can not exist in an on-demand world, Hannah Barbera only works in that old world where people would put on the tv to have the tv on, and they had to watch what the tv was showing. In a world where people were not putting on tv they wanted to watch, but where they are turning on a piece of furniture like they would a lightbulb

For me the worst thing is how Hannah-Barbera forever tainted the image of cartoons in the west as something for kids.

          >rosie > talking animals

I think Rosie was a portrayal of the black housekeeper. The Flintstones didn't have one because they were a working class family.

It turned the perception of all animation into "shitty family sitcom but cartoon" and that's what it remains to this day

I makes sense he would like something like old school Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes shorts, but a lot of the Hanna Barbera shorts have many of the flaws he bashes in contemporary 90s and 21st century animation.

Agreed with a lot of the critical comments in this thread. I see the appeal of Hannah Barbera stuff from a design perspective and the concepts are interesting but the format and content of the cartoon itself is mind-numbingly boring. I grew up watching this stuff too so idk what it was. Maybe it was competition with other cartoons, and the other cartoons were reinforced by modern toys and games? But even then, some cartoons that never had toys and games were more interesting than Flintstones or Jetsons or whatever.

Never liked Scooby Doo either, sorry.

To follow up on this post, as others have mentioned, yeah...Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes were great, I could watch them for hours, and I never had toys of that stuff either. But Hannah-Barbera just couldn't get into

A Pup Named Scooby Doo deserves more credit for being a "baby/kid versions" spin off that doesn't suck ass and along with Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures is an origin point for 90's cartoons. I don't think Animaniacs, Tazmania, Freakazoid and cartoons influenced by those shows would even exist without A Pup Named Scooby Doo and while Tiny Toon Adventures would have still existed it would have been a very different show.

The sad truth is most cartoons are utter shit.
The Hannah Barbara shit of the 60s was just garbage to fill out timeslots in variety shows (think Krusty with Itchy and Scratchy)
The 70s were mostly a continuation of this, but without the variety show. You also got vomit like the smurfs and care-bears coming out, which ties into the 80s, where cartoons only existed as extended advertisements.
Wasn't really till the 90s where cartoons were allowed to breathe again, and even then they were shackled to the absolute atrocity that is Klasky Csupo animation.

It's not a fair comparison. Looney Tunes didn't have the time and budget constraints that animation developed for television does. Hanna Barbera's limited animation was an advance on the like of Crusader Rabbit and Rocky and Bullwinkle.

True but that doesn’t mean Hannah Barbera isn’t shoveled out trash
