Ghibli's trick is to be more of a vibe than a movie. They deliberately meander through a world rather than telling a satisfactory story to leave the audience wanting more rather than doing anything with the time they have. It's the same as SoL/moeshit that Miyazaki claims to hate but with a fantastical skin pasted over it rather than a mundane one.

Saw The Wind Rises last week, really did not like it. Its too meandering, for such an interesting time its a really dull movie.
-not really about the genius of the guy
-not really about the science behind the planes
    -not really about the war
-not really about his wife (she comes in like 80% into the movie, except for the beginning)

So what was it about? The guy just kind of mildly reacts to everything around him until the movie just ends.

      Anonymous

it's about all those things combined but i agree it's pretty weak for miyazaki and even he wasn't sure how to handle it even though being a fan of airplanes and anti-war at the same time is his biggest theme.
it's based on a real person that actually existed. miyazaki didn't do anything like that before and it wasn't his own idea to make it a feature film so i don't think it worked well.
if i describe it in a good way, it's a subtle movie about even a very talented guy's carrier gets ruined in a hard time and there's no many things you can do but you should live strong as much as possible.

"Art" (The word) specifically refers to visual art, like paintings, drawings, etc. Maybe sculptures if you really stretch the definition. It doesn't mean "creative work" like you think it does. Music and literature literally are not art, only morons like you who desperately try to make "art" mean "srs business creative works" consider them that.

Miyazaki often portrayed European and Japanese culture that existed prior to the world wars that lead to the current immigrant replacement. All of his fans, even the ones that insist they are for "diversity", are naturally attracted to the portrayal of homogenous societies whether they are European or Japanese.
