He didn't go bankrupt. Just ousted. He made NeXT and directly challenged them with an even better computer. Ironically Apple came back to purchase it from him about a decade later. NeXTSTep became the basis for Mac OS X.
Apple struggled for years due to ridiculously high PC prices because of proprietary hardware which they insisted on. It wasn't until Jobs gave Macs PC architecture on Apple software and developing non-PC tech from the Ipod to the Iphone that Apple bounced back.
