Why are they like this? Do they really think they're worth all of this because they write marvel movies?

      Anonymous

They have convinced themselves that someone from "every background" needs to be involved in the writing because you aren't allowed to write characters if you are white without someone correcting your work. That's why everything is soulless slop now. So a bunch of talentless hacks who all have the same worldview think they are including "diverse perspectives" because they all clap in agreement when they share their inoffensive ideas and dull down any possible creative edge. This all became clear to me when I watched the Zoe Kravitz movie about an anxiety-ridden POC tech worker living in the post-covid world. They literally can't make anything up.

No, it isn't. That's why mass market entertainment continues to be entertainment marketed to the masses. Art films and high-budget productions are not subject to the same conditions as Generic Police Procedural S21E19.

The shit you're complaining about this affecting is shit you don't care about, anyway.

It's clearly failing at that when we're seeing flop after flop after flop. You don't need 20 mouthbreathers to write Generic Police Procedural S21E19. Those writers rooms are just unskilled labor sniffing each other's farts at that point.

            Anonymous

I'd argue that generic police procedurals are one of the few things that could work with 20 writers since you have to come up with a new whodunit every episode.
Comedy is another one, just for joke writers though.

Those types of shows are only on network television. These writers want to work on streaming where they have the freedom to make 8 hour movies without the constraints of writing around commercial breaks and the FCC. They just want to have their cake and eat it too.

The funny thing about this is that when they talk about diversity they just mean race and gender, when it comes to diversity of viewpoints they're absolutely opposed. Anyone who doesn't toe the lefty line will be booted as soon as their opinions are expressed.

      >They think 100k for 4 months of work is not good enough
      >They want 20+ people in every writers room

You don't seem to understand that writers (and people in film) don't work full-time. They work on project to project. Film people sometimes go weeks or months without work between projects. Any money they earn has to last and be stretched over a long period of time. In addition, they must give the union a cut of their paycheck. They also don't get taxes taken out of their checks. So some money must be set aside as well.

$100K - minus (all taxes and required expenses) = around $50K when it's all said and done.

Then you use $50K to raise a family and pay for household costs for the year.

That being said, modern writers sure do suck in terms of quality writing.

Chuds aren't licking any boots, they hate everybody in this situation; but it is enjoyable watching one segment of the hated group being starved and tortured by another segment of the hated group. Its not hypocritical to cheer on the executives in these circumstances, just so that the suffering of the writers and actors can be prolonged.

I fully support the writers in the discussion, and honestly think they are asking for way too little. They should be asking for three or four times as much up front as they get today, and for bigger residuals. And they should not budge at all from those demands, and keep their strike going as long as it takes, with no compromises.

The only people who work in Hollywood are coastal nepo babies. This just means more money for them. Someone up there pointed out all of this is irrelevant to us anway, as it's just a fight between slop merchants at the slop factory where they produce slop we don't watch anyway.

I only support the studios because people I dislike, Bob Chipman for example, probably oppose them.

That's all it is, huh? Couldn't be the gatekeeping from said nepo-babies to make sure their power base is secure. This isn't a problem you solve by throwing more money at it, that'll only make it even harder for people who aren't established to break into the industry as the cost of living grows exponentially higher. Best thing is to support independent films that don't suck, which is obviously easier said than done.

We can include a variety of topics like a white character who has repressed jealousy of Black penis size, a white woman repressing her attraction to Black men due to her father's conditioning, and an episode where the other Indian and Chinese Phantom Thieves confront a white male using them as puppets as acceptable immigrants when they actually identify with PoC causes?

48k a year is more than I've ever made in my life also I have never had a job where I get "residuals". imagine if i got in perptuity 1 cent every time someone walked over the patch of floor i swept once at walmart.

Anon that's $23 an hour. At this rate of inflation you'll be there by next year thanks to Biden.

my salary at the last job i had was $12.50 an hour. that was after over 10 years working there, started at $8 an hour. no residuals. no sympy here for hollywood writers and even less for actors, and even less for studio execs. hollywood hasn't put out anything worth watching since 2012 anyway.

office job. work wasn't bad but having to deal with customers on the phone was emasculating and pay and lack of benefits was shit. covid turned out to be a blessing cause unemployment paid more that year than working did.

Residuals or participation in profits only makes sense if you're one of the people who put money in the project or if you were working for free

If a writer works on a book to publish in their own time, then they have both a chance of selling a lot and making bank or the book failing and they wasted their time and effort time for minimal reward. It's essentially a bet on themselves.
These writers are cowards that won't bet on themselves because deep down they know they are talentless hacks, and therefore want a gig as a writer for a studio that guarantees pay for their labor, and still stupidly believe they are entitled to a return on the profits (if there are any), even though they outsourced all the the risk to the studio.

It gives me a chuckle how they must seethe when the drunken scotsman makes a youtube video shitting on slop they put to screens and also had the balls they didn't to publish his own book series.
