This all started back in 2011 around New 52, the big relaunch to gather new readers. Geoff Johns wanted Hal Jordan over John Stewart as Green Lantern, and Cyborg was their best option at the time due to widespread recognition via the Teen Titans cartoon. However this regulated Vic to be a walking plot device and bus thanks to his Mother Box upgrades. They've since stop trying to push him in books, the movie is just catching up.

Personally I would have gone with either Vixen or Bumblebee. Gives Wonder Woman another woman on the team to talk too, and both have interesting powers.

Bee probably would have been raped with the bump to big leagues by meshing her carefree personality to dark and edgy.

If had to be black would have gone Mr. Terrfeic and just make him tech with Captain America feats. (Although that'd infringe on bats). If not black, go for Sideways.

Terrific doesn't really mesh well on the League since Batman does most of the shit he can do sans the T-Spheres, but more importantly his name is too silly for normies to take him seriously.

          Anonymous

Disagree, I always thought Mr. Terrific was a cool name.

So ever black characters is a token?

No, bit a lot of people on Cinemaphile have issues with black characters in general. To them any black character who isn't a self loathing Uncle Tom or villain is a token

Mr. Terrifics cool but he excels off the league with his own team or by himself teaming up with other heroes. As a huge fan of the Terrifics id hate to see him relegated to three lines in the book computer guy

Mister Terrific isn't any more silly than Superman, Wonder Woman, Mister Fantastic, Mister Incredible, etc.
Superheroes have silly names in general, people only stop thinking they're silly because they get used to them, just think about "Batman" enough and you'll realize how fricking ridiculous it sounds.

Vixen is a good choice, I'd have gone with Black Lightning personally. He's one of DC's first black characters, if there must be a black founding leaguer, he deserves the distinction.
Ironically, putting Cyborg on the league meant leaving the titans without one of their most significant black characters. And it's not like DC ever does anything with Bumblebee.

        Anonymous

I don't know Black Lightning just seems kind of ehh. Dude is a street level hero with generic lightning powers. Vixen to me seems more versatile. Bumblebee is just in Titan limbo and unfairly compared to Wasp

          Anonymous

He's great but lightning is a power that can be duplicated by the Flash, Wonder Woman's gauntlets, a bat-gadget etc.

Vixen is hot and the best choice.

          Anonymous

There's more to Black Lightning 's powers than generic electricity. The dark colored electricity he generates have been hinted to have unique powers, but writers never explain what that might be.

His youngest daughter has a more interesting power set, in theory she can become and generate infinite amounts of energy, not just electricity.

Because Geoff Johns he saw cyborg as a token to shield Hal. Johns also fought against some GL movies, at some point WB wanted a Kyle as a rookie and John as the veteran in a buddy cop movie with Hal already gone parallax (i have no doubt that would had ended with Hal sacrificing himself final night style), but Johns sperged against it. Johns ironically became the biggest obstacle for flash and green lantern movies and pushed for cyborg a role that would to to Fisher, Johns being a Halgay ended up being a domino of bad ideas.

He's a black Justice League member that's been in the league before as a Junior member (Superfriends) who doesn't have a silly stigma attached to him. So no Black Lightining and no Vixen. Easy to tie into a 4th world plot with his tech.
Also, at the time they didn't want to use Green Lantern on the team. Otherwise they would have chosen John Stewart. In comics world, Geoff Jones wanted Hal to be Green Lantern so they needed Cyborg there as well.

Yes, cyborg in his JL was just the bus driver and did nothing for 50 issues, he literally made him a founding member, got rid of the longest running justice leaguer (Martian manhunter) but had no plan, no ideas for his new member. To out it in simpler terms: Lex Luthor got more lines and more spotlight as a leaguer in 14 issues than cyborg in 50, that's how tokenizing cyborg in the league was. This is something both /misc/ and reddit can agree, cyborg was just there because he was black and Johns wanted a black guy because in his mind he wouldn't be forced to replace Hal with John.

At what point does WB just say "frick it" and make a movie with the DCAU Justice League team?

This is the team every normalgay is familiar with. It would earn them massive nostalgia points with Millennials. What's stopping them?

Will John's admit defeat to Timm?

Seems like they want the Hawks to be together with the JSA cast, Timm's specific ships are probably not on anyone's lists. Having Barry would be better too. With that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, MM, and GL would be a good starting lineup.

Because the New52 like the movies were poorly planned out. By the end of the first Avengers they already teased Thanos and the Infinity stones. DC panicked and wanted to do Darkseid right away rather than set him up through multiple movies because I guess Starro is too "silly" to be the villain that makes the JL form. Rewriting Cyborg's origin to tie-into the motherboxes is not the worst idea, but they could have left him as a Titan and just had it tease that the JL and the Titans would team up eventually to take down a bigger foe. But again, they just wanted to rush the whole thing.

The DCEU really is a cursed property.

slim pickings but I agree with Vixen and Black Lightning suggestions. BL has slight connections to batman so that might be a turnoff, but Vixen is an all around good pick

Hell, put John AND Vixen on the team. Vixen's powers are unique enough and diverse enough that she's a good addition to the JL as a whole. And speaking of the DCAU, you can do some romance between her and John, simulate some of the fun JL had with John and Shayera.

    >Super Friends
Lol. Martian Manhunter should've been used. Cyborg was used because during the New 52 he replaced Manhunter.

Everybody shits on J'onn for his fire weakness but he IS one of the core elements that makes the JL work. In particular his telepathy and shapeshifting provide really important elements to the overall sleight of powers the team has. Not to mention his personality meshes well and bounces well off of the other characters.

He's a good "glue guy." The JL is better with him than without him, as far as storytelling and character dynamics go.

and his personality can literally be copy and pasted onto any JL member outside of the main with no defined personality
