You have to add them up? I don't get it. Why not just say something that did get 500 million ratings?

You dont understand lil alpha gay. Back then 500 million on tv before the internet would be like 100 billion views today.

Those videos rack them up over years with many people watching the same video multiple times over time. This was broadcast in 27 countries on a Thursday and half a billion people all tuned in to see it. The population of the world was 5.4 billion at the time. Basically 10% of the world turned on their tvs to watch a music video at the same time.

I'm sure Bieber's Baby has more views than that.

Fastest viewed Youtube video in 24/hours was 108 million. Black or White did 500 million in 24 hours before social media or widespread internet availability.

Not the same, in terms of total viewership in his 30 year solo career, MJ averaged 66 million viewers whenever he had a primetime Television broadcast

This is referring to the United States specifically by the way, so people don't get confused.

No social media, only way to get views was people sitting in front of a tv screen
For record sales, you could only buy them by going into a store and waiting in line. No amazon, digital purchasing or streaming. Sales are 80% digital now, so you'd be looking at a 80% increase in the sales each of his albums would have had in the first year alone.

I actually remember being a kid and the world premiere being like an event that everyone stopped what they were doing to watch. I don't think zoomers really appreciate what a big deal MJ was

        >how much famous were the simpsons back in 1991 already?
Already famous. Do the Bartman had come out and merchandise was everywhere. My family would sit down together to watch it every week when it aired and all laughed and even though I would've been lucky to get half the jokes it still had a universal appeal.

The most influential person in the world making a song about how racism doesn't matter, and how everyone should get along and love each other. Pretty much spat in the face of everything that israelites were trying to push at the time. Everything Michael Jackson stood up for and did back then is what Liberals claim to support now.

It's hard to quite explain the magnitude and importance of MJ to someone who wasn't there.
The equivalent would have been if the Truman Show portrayed in the movie went off air, only to be revived five years later. In that film you see how billions of people grew up with Truman on Television every day from childhood into adulthood, that show revival would have done a massive audience.
The difference here would have been if Truman was black, and when people saw him after such a long absence his skin color had changed to White, people would wonder what happened since they heard nothing from him for so long. That's why the Oprah interview was such a global firestorm at the time
