He was a little older than that, but I could also see horrific burn injuries + Dark Side abuse + whatever steroids the suit was pumping into him causing Anakin to age like absolute shit.

Would Luke have saved Vader, or vice versa, if not for their otherwise arbitrary blood relation?

      No

Genetic relation is not the same as love lol. This dude was Space Hitler and had like four minutes of screentime with Luke, almost all of which was spent trying to kill him. Where does the love factor in?

Probably not. The only reason Vader redeemed himself was for the sake of his son. If Luke was just the kid of a guy he killed 20 years ago, then it would be a lot harder to justify why he would want to turn back to the light for him. It could still be done mind you, but it would be a lot more contrived and not have the same weight to it.

Fifteen seconds prior to his "redemption" is him threatening his son with the murder and mindrape of his sister, who is Vader's daughter by the way. I argue this because the plot seemed more relevant to Luke. He wanted to save Vader because Luke saw himself in him, literally, and was afraid of becoming what Vader was. Whether Vader redeems himself or not is irrelevant to the story, the attempt is all that matters for Luke's arc. The issue I have is that Vader's redemption takes away from Luke, and it comes out of nowhere and makes no sense.
Luke already had the aforementioned motivations of his own inner conflict, as well as to honor Obi-Wan's legacy and achieve what he had failed. The shoehorned father/son relationship is unnecessary and detracts from these themes.

          >Fifteen seconds prior to his "redemption" is him threatening his son with the murder and mindrape of his sister, who is Vader's daughter by the way.
A bluff to get Luke to tap into his rage and fall to the dark side, which is what Vader was trying to do for the entire duel. It's literally stated multiple times by everyone that's what Palpatine and Vader want. Palpatine only decides to kill Luke after learning about Leia and once Luke cements his position as a Jedi.

If Luke sees himself in Vader but isn't able to redeem him, then what does that say about Luke? How can he be a true Jedi if he can't even bring out the light in someone he ostensibly thinks is him

          >The issue I have is that Vader's redemption takes away from Luke, and it comes out of nowhere and makes no sense.
Not really. It's painfully clear throughout the movie that Vader doesn't want Luke to follow his path, but feels there's no other choice because of how powerful Palpatine is. When he realizes Palpatine is actually going to kill Luke, he finally decides to act on his emotions and save him.

          >The shoehorned father/son relationship is unnecessary and detracts from these themes.
Like I said before, this plot could have been done without making Vader and Luke related, but it would suddenly become a lot more contrived that Luke felt so strongly about redeeming the guy who killed his dad.

I don't know the exact timeline, but Luke is a teenager in the movies, so Vader would have to be in his 30's at the earliest. There's also the fact that they hadn't decided exactly what happened to Vader at that point, just that it was some horrific accident (Lucas had decided that it involved lava, but not everybody knew that), so the makeup artists / SFX guys just made him look as deformed as possible. There's even stuff in there which doesn't quite match up with later canon, like, when he gets zapped by Palpatine, you can see that his entire upper torso / neck is being held together with artificial supports, which implies that his neck was broken by Obi-Wan (which obviously doesn't happen in ROTS). The actor even plays him like he's got a serious neck injury, he can only move his eyes and he can only breathe and talk with extreme difficulty.
