THIS IS A GIANT COCK.

Why hasn’t PTA, despite many attempts including his most recent kino Licorice Pizza, been unable to surpass his sophomore masterpiece, Boogie Nights?

because Boogie Nights is the greatest story nobody dared to tell and he literally summed up the entire porno industry in one movie.

It's one of the GOAT movies of all time. The fact that based Burt hated it and wanted it not released makes it even better.

He'll never come anywhere close to touching the greatness of Boogie Nights. But that's OK most people make only one true classic and other good movies.

      >can someone explain to me what the frick the drug deal/fire cracker scene was all about

I have a theory. That character and Crazy Chester from The Weight are the same person.

All the characters in The Weight are based on real people and supposedly Crazy Chester's thing was he would set off firecrackers at parties. (That's why Crazy Chester lies and says I'm a peaceful man, he isn't he sets off firecrackers).

Levon Helm and PTA both lived in Hollywood in the late 70s early 80s.

Either that or it's just supposed to be a subtle way of pointing out that the producer is a pedophile because he's taking advantage of a twink who is mentally deficient setting off firecrackers like a kid.

PTA is the dictionary definition of entry level cinema. He not only steals from better directors, but he does it without any irony like Tarantino.

I am personally fine with it though. Because through PTA, all these freshmen college students will discover Robert Altman, who was the real deal. They will discover Scorsese, the most important American film director of our time, they will discover Kubrick, and the Coen Bros.

Through Altman, they will discover Renoir, through Kubrick, they will discover Ophuls, Scorsese to Fellini. Suddenly they realize PTA was just a child with no original thoughts in his head, that his films just revolve around quoting better directors while adding epic catch phrases like "I drink your milkshake!" and "Pig frick!" Really there is no bigger clue in to how meaningless his cinema is when the only thing people discuss when mentioning his movies are 'le epic catch phrases, dude!'

You might say great artist steal, but what Picasso meant by this is that great artists are able to understand what works and manipulate it. PTA merely 'mimics'. This is why it is completely obvious who he is mimicking from film to film.

        >obscure Altman.

The obscure Altman stuff is the bad and actively forgotten (Dr. T. and the Women). His best is universally recognized as brilliant. Altman’s rep has always been his inconsistencies

I take it back, You’re right. I focus on his early work (MASH, macabe), big budget genius flops (Popeyes), reinvention (player/short cuts). I watched California split long and it was great. Gonna deep dive soon for the reminder..

No. That would be marvel shit and speilberg. Most normies don't know who PTA is.

Also what exactly did he steal? Magnolia and The Master seem pretty original to me.

      > He not only steals from better directors

Not true. That’s Tarantino. PTA has a distinctive style including whip pans and long tracks. Really every director is somewhat derivative, but PTA manages a style that isn’t wholly “unique” (aka Wes Anderson) or thematically repetitive (Nolan muh Time Shifts / Shyamalan muh twists). That’s he gets indulgent, like Magnolia. Hard to nail what exactly he’s going for in stuff like Master. Often seems more like a process then a vision.

I actually feel something while watching PTA movies. It's really difficult for a filmmaker to actually get the jaded audience to become emotionally involved. PTA is able to do that pretty consistently.

he surpassed it multiple times, most recently with inherent vice. boogie nights is maybe 1/3 of a good movie, the rest is basically an extended SNL skit. the only thing he's done worse than it is magnolia.

inherent vice is a jerkoff joke film, quite fitting that it stars that fricking HACK joaquin

yeah if you ever want to hear the dumbest criticism imaginable of boogie nights then listen to QT attempt to drop nerd knowledge. he goes on and on and on about how burt reynolds was obviously styled after a particular porn director but he wouldn't have said that stuff! or something

      Magnolia was his magnum opus

      agree

the master is incredibly overrated. if you're gonna' make the PSH-LRH joke then go all the way with it. LRH actually had a really disgusting bizarre surreal life so why not show that? instead we get endless freddie who is a boring boring guy. a nothing amy adams performance also as per usual. couldn't care less about those characters
