it's slop with very few redeeming qualities (Mia Goth, Dakota Johnsons wooden acting being a bit of a plus, great body horror). don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I think it's a good film in its own right but it has little if anything to do with the original film. The cold war aftermath stuff is very hamfisted, but I like the rest of the film.

I should mention I’ve already watched the remake before, just hoping seeing it on the big screen will change my opinion of it. I’d much rather see the original considering it has a half-dozen great scenes while the remake has 1 or 2 tops. It does have great music I’ll admit

Raleigh. I see they’re playing The Fugitive at your theater though, that’s cool. I saw Possession in theaters earlier this week and it blew Suspiria 2018 out of the water

The melodramatic acting during their arguments was intentional I think.

i fricking love the remake and the original. i just view them as completely different things. you'll have a good time but don't expect the original

What’s your opinion on the exploding heads scene in the remake?

        Anonymous

possibly the worst thing about the movie. i've seen people say that they intentionally made it look that way with the shutter effect bullshit, but i just think it made it look horrible. doesn't ruin the movie for me though

I thought it was the worst scene in the movie with that janky framerate shit. It’s cool they actually focused on ballet in the remake but it could’ve used more scenes like picrel. I also love the absurdity of the kills in the original (dog mauling, Sara’s death etc), something the remake lacked

i remember people on twitter seething at Jay Bauman from RLM for suggesting the ending looking so terrible because they "ran out of money" and called it the "worst take he's ever had". I was so confused because it seemed like a reasonable take to make something so low lit and shitty looking? if it were budget related i'd give it more of a pass than intentional

It's better than the remake. The problem with it however is that the pacing is nowhere as tight as the original and can feel quite bloated as a result.
    Regardless, the remake:
    >better narrative
    >dancing is actually an integral part of the film
    >better performances
    >weirder
    >the climax

The two movies couldn’t be more different but I find the original incredibly charming.
      >hypnogogic, surreal atmosphere from the first scene
      >ridiculous dialogue written for children acted out by women in their late 20s
      >70s giallo dubbing
      >music box-esque soundtrack
      >garish color palette
      >every kill is memorable and remarkable to a degree
      >characterization/plot take a backseat to the overall atmosphere described above
It’s also the perfect length while the remake is a half-hour too long. My only issue with the original is how abruptly it ends.
They also brought back the original lead actress and completely squandered her, just like the new Halloween/Exorcist films.

I like the original too but I feel it's less enjoyable just because of the remake's existence. Luckily though Inferno is even better, probably Argento's most underrated film

Funny, I feel the remake is less enjoyable because of the original’s existence. Guadagnino should’ve just called it something else if they’re only similar in passing.
i’ll admit I haven’t seen Inferno yet but doesn’t it take the surreality of Suspiria ‘77 and turn it up to 11? If so, sounds great to me.

I think preferring one over the other really depends on the order you watched it. Granted, I watched the remake before I even watched the original or any of Argento's movies really. I think since I watched the remake first I kinda expected the movie to have a pretty substantial narrative when it's basically just a very pretty and atmospheric slasher, not to mention ballet has no actual significance in the original, when the remake kinda gave me the impression that was the whole point of the films.
And yeah, Inferno is great, it's more nonsensical and insane the Suspiria imo.

Personally I think it boils down to, if you prefer atmosphere you’ll like the original more, and if you prefer plot/lore you’ll like the remake more

The remake has many elements that provide a more cohesive and logical experience than the original, then ruins it with fricktarded lesbionic girl power propaganda. I prefer the original and I am not sorry to admit it.

So the best way to watch it is orginal, remake, original?

        Anonymous

I went original then remake, but they aren’t related in any way so it doesn’t matter which you watch first.
Also, imagine watching Suspiria for a “cohesive and logical experience” when it’s essentially Snow White on acid lol
