talking about it and making memes doesn't do shit to help their bottom line unless it's actually a good movie/ tv show though. See Morbiuis, one of the biggest memes of this year and a complete and utter flop at the box office. Sony even re-released the movie in theatres because they thought the meme attention it got would translate into ticket sales and it flopped again.

I had an argument with my girlfriend over this exact concept recently, and over a cartoon character no less. Apparently the canon age for Yoko Littner is 14 years old, which makes no sense when you consider that Kamina is 18, she's the same size as him and they're of roughly the same emotional maturity, and Simon, who is decidedly smaller and is paired with Nia, is 14 too. I have no idea why those Jap fricks decided to lock in her age as "14" considering it doesn't even remotely make sense in the context of the world, so my argument to my girlfriend was that it should be considered a Death of the Author scenario. If it makes no fricking sense, ignore it and apply your own headcanon. In this case I headcanon her as being 18. She could even be 17 and it would still make more sense considering her interactions with her based love interest.
But all of that has little meaning when you consider the fact that she, and many other Zoomers (she's 23, just barely a Zoomer) are getting upset over the age of fictional characters, something that is largely arbitrary.
I never saw that sort of thing back in 2005-2010. It's just another side effect of Eternal September after normalgays got access to the internet.

        Anonymous

Its not zoomers, its millennials desperately trying to hide the fact that they are now aging pedophiles.

Any zoomers doing it are just taking after millennials doing it. Its not even a generation thing and more of a normalgay thing. The more normalgays who watch anime the less open minded they are going to be about Japanese or otaku culture going into it. To these normalgays watching anime, they may as well be watching something produced by Hollywood and when they see a bunch of dicky they get uncomfortable because again, they're close minded normalgays uncomfortable with even their own thoughts and emotions.

Millennials are homosexuals. Everything is political to them. Everything zoomers do will be considered stupid to them. If zoomers dressed up as nazis in black face to see the minions these homosexuals would call them morons falling for a glow op. When they do this they will call them morons falling for a marketing campaign. If zoomers did literally nothing but dress up in suits in groups of 10 and grab lunch local restaurants they'd still find a way to criticize them.

None of this feels organic. I reckon the studio paid a bunch of people to do this and had the media report on it so people think it's real.

      Anonymous

I can see that, but it honestly feels like an extension of the Morbius memeing. That came out of the studio making cringy tik tok ads with that text to speech voice, and people took it and ran with it ironically. Instead of a Morbillion, Minions was gonna make a Minillion, a Gruillion tickets. Except a colorful kid’s movie is even still more entertaining than Morbius, so some tik tok kid had the idea to go with “the boys” all suited up. It became a trend and then more kids were doing it.

      Anonymous

Minions have been associated with subverting the innocence of it, or at least stepping up the edginess of the boomer version of it.
Boomers would post Bob or whatever with the caption
      >Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee!
Millennials and Gen Zers caught on and posted the image distorted with a caption reading something
      >The body is buried under the floorboards.
I can see this recent marketing push, jumping on the “ironic” Morbius trend being not so organic, but this ironic memeing of the minions has gone on for many years.

Basic level humour (no complexity at all that they may not understand due to age for example a joke based on a modern subject like social media wouldn't hit and theyd not get it. Basic humour is timeless. basic also means polite which they also like. No swearing or rudeness)

Cute looking and acting (triggers the same biological instinct as what makes humans adore babies, kittens and puppies etc and women in menopause or post have a stronger instinct)

They're dumb (boomers like this cos it makes them feel smart)

I'm sorry, but if you are following a TikTok trend, you are the NPC in this situation. Or a corporate minion to be more exact. You are just a walking advertisement and swallowing it up for TikTok likes.

I said it before, I'll say it again: living through a veil of irony is no way to live at all. Sincerity was a virtue of the old world. Without it, your soul erodes. It's one thing to have fun. But bandwagoning a TikTok trend for 5 seconds is not. It's tasteless conformity. The joke is ultimately on them because they drove up sales for a childish film. Just like the Morbius-ploy. Getting studios to make another one isn't a "prank," and you weren't being "post-ironic." You just polluted your world. Our world.

And for those of you name-dropping Habbo, please stop larping. You looked it up on KnowYourMeme over the past week and somehow think Gentleminions is remotely close. You were never part of that board culture. You were never part of the old Internet. You never wandered cyberspace like a wild west of html and pop ups. You are a product of the modern monopoly, streamlined and homogenous. You heart doesn't twinge when you see a gif.

Whenever I took my two neices out to see the new Despicable Me movie this summer I couldn't help but be mesmerized by those sexy little tater tots. Throughout the entire movie I had an ever growing buldge in my pants. Towards the end of the movie I couldn't take it any longer and had to... relieve myself in the stalls. I shot my load in the trash can of the Cinemark restroom as fast as could so I could get back to my neices. Once the movie had ended I dropped the kiddos off at VBS for the afternoon. And with Minions, on my mind I drove home and looked at some depraved Minion pictures to say the least. For the past few days I have garnered a rather large collection of Minion smut and sexual Minion art. It was all fine until yesterday, my step mom walked in on me fornificating with my Minion plush that I won from a claw machine at Walmart. She immediately told my hyper religious dad about it and now they're talking about kicking me out of the house (for the record I'm 21). But worse than that, the whole family has been degrading me for my Minion love and frankly, it's making me feal really guilty. So, people of Cinemaphile, do you think my attraction to those frickable Twinkies is okay or no?

Autists have a hateboner for illumination despite them just making harmless low-budget movies for young kids. There's countless youtube essays hating minions and associate the downfall of dreamworks/disney animation to illumination since people seethe that the thing which took "effort" to make is making less money than minionchads so the bigger companies are putting less effort in too.

My advice to zoomies: don't stop. Millenials will forever seethe at anything and especially things you do. Their opinions on what they consider cringe or not is irrelevant since they're a generation of failures like the Xers before them. Continue having fun, sóyllenials will keep crying and yelling at the clouds. Everything they say is unironically cope.

Have any of you guys actually seen the zoomies doing this? Went to the theater Monday to see that Black Phone movie and legitimately a group of like 15, what looked to be highschool aged, kids came into the theater dressed in fricking tuxedos. No one really paid them any attention. And they themselves werent really doing anything except when they were standing in line for snacks or to pick their tickets up they would like stand with their feet together and their hands crossed while staring straight forward. Honestly if I didnt know what the meme was you would think they were just some weird cultists. Between that though they would kind of giggle amongst themselves, i assume because of how hilarious they thought they were being.

See it would be funny if it was organic, or like something you did to embarrass your girlfriend who forced you to take her to the minions movie. The people doing this now would have thought planking and gangnam style were hilarious ten years ago.

            Anonymous

            >its a marketing ploy
First, nobody is acting like its a transgressive or rebellious act. Why does everything have to have some political performance art to millenials? Second you, an old man have turned it rebellious by the simple fact of getting mad at them. This is literally no different then its ok to be white signs. Simply going to a movie theater to watch a movie in suits has apparently pissed you off. Why? Do suits remind you of the uncle that molested you? The more angry you get the more rebellious it becomes just like IOTBW.

Second its no more a marketing campaign then fricking with mountain dew polls, promoting club penguine or telling people to raid twitch streamers.

Just admit it. You've become a bitter old man who's only idea of fun is throwing a communist revolution.

              >its no more a marketing campaign then fricking with mountain dew polls, promoting club penguine or telling people to raid twitch streamers.
Do those things cost money? Naming a Mt. Dew "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" is the literal opposite of a marketing campaign. That's why it's funny.

              >The original video was funny. How is telling yourself the same joke over and over funny?
You just described memes in general

The difference between a meme and a social media trend is that memes aren't spread in a monkey-see, monkey-do fashion for the sake of drawing attention to yourself.

          >young kids
Isn't the whole point of this trend that guys in their teens and early 20's are dressing up to watch a movie meant for four-year-olds? The "joke" is that they're too old to be the target audience for the movie.
