This is so fricking good. I'm reading the book now and it's only making me appreciate the film more.

For real - I think there is some seriously nasty shit in this movie. Casting the fricking deformed guy and making him run naked across a field is absolute madness. There are some things that you see in movies that you can easily dismiss as fake and/or simulated acts of the worst aspects of humanity, but the naked elephant man sequence is more akin to pornography because it's so graphic and explicit (cannot be faked).

It has a frightening yet absorbing atmosphere. It underexplains in a way that makes everything feel so strangely real. You have to take it on its own terms. The book is interesting but worse in every way than the film.

          well put
this movie is way better at doing what it does than any lovecraft/unspeakable horror shit

I guess you weren't fully immersed. I found her portrayal alien enough to the point where I didn't get sexual vibes despite her being nude.
Unironically a testament to a good performance.

I loved that the director knew how to play to strengths of his medium, rather than just taking everything that happened in the book and putting it on screen, if that makes sense. Definitely enhanced the source material rather than just adapted it.

Exactly. The way he did it works way better on film. In the book the alien is also not as attractive as Scarlett so that changes a lot about the story and message too. The studio forced him to work with a big name and he worked around that masterfully and build upon that premise of her being a 10.

Don't trust strangers, they may be scary aliens that will harvest your body... or even worse they might be some normal guy that will rape you

I wasn't a huge fan. I felt like it was a bit too slow for how obvious the message was the movie was going for. The overly long Space Odyssey reference at the beginning was fairly overkill.
I will give credit to some of the interesting things they did regarding the style, especially having ScarJo drive up to real life random people in the car.

The scene in front of mirror is shot exactly how your average exploitation director would shoot it and comes off as one of most gratuitous nude scenes of last decade.

I've heard people say this and I find it incomprehensible. If you're thinking "ooohhh... BOOBY and ASS" at that point in the film you've failed to experience it at all up until that point. The character's surveying her own body and the film conveys that with the same stony directness it conveys everything else.

I'm this boards biggest scarjobro and I was very turned on. I didn't see the movie, nor will I, but her body was amazing.
And then you realize she had lost weight and booba since her peak.

If you really think your average exploitation director would bother with such a ponderous, dimly-lit non-sexual nude scene then the only explanation is that you’re not watching good enough exploitation films. May I recommend the oeuvre of one Mr. Russ Meyer?

That scene is pure titillation and Russ Meyer was not your average exploitation director so frick off.

Not at all, it’s part of her actualisation process. She’s coming to terms with the idea of herself as a human being, as part of the world she’s visiting. Hence all the nature imagery in the second half of the film. Meyer was not an average exploitation director, true, he was an exceptional one. But a scene of a woman examining herself naked in a mirror in an exploitation film, or at least a half-decent, actually sexy one, would consist of the character rubbing her breasts/between her legs and moaning/sighing graphically while sax/electric piano played in the background. None of this electric radiator-lit, slow pan-up the body arty gubbins. Exploitation films try and sell you sex. This film tries to sell you the experience of discovering that you are, quite to your own surprise, a human being.

Glazer is titillating dishonest hack who filmed that scene with angle and framing like that to make his pretentious movie more marketable. IMDb has a low rating and for once the voters are right. I lost respect for both of them.

Fleshing out the sci-fi elements (like the book does) would have taken away from the alien feeling in the film imo.
