Where does that put me on the scale?

I am born in 1995 and I loved this movie for being different from the T&J show. To me it felt like the natural adaption to a theatrical movie, it felt like I was watching All Dogs Go To Heaven or some other children's movie.

I absolutely hated Secret of the Ring T&J movie, I found it even more boring than the Dietrich and Chuck Jones T&J.

As far as I know, the most recent Tom and Jerry movies kind of do the same thing with hamfisted morals and such.
The Wizard of Oz one had Auntie Em give a moral talk to them about how important friendship is while the Willy Wonka one kept having Charlie give lessons about friendship and how stealing is wrong. The only difference is both Tom and Jerry never talked.

      Anonymous

It's because no one's been able to write a decent T&J story since the OG Hanna-Barbera movies were made. I remember the race around the world movie being decent, even if it was filled with characters who didn't need to be there.

        Anonymous

How? It can't be that fricking hard.

          Anonymous

The main problem is how it's no dialogue and visual storytelling, and the ability to do good slapstick. The original movies had it down perfectly, even though they had to change the original character designs a bit (since people didn't like seeing an actual cat get hurt, but found it funnier when he screamed like a man). Animating around the music was really important too. Another thing that makes the movies so good is that they're a product of their time and they were able to get away with shit that everyone's too chickenshit to mimic now. But the main issue is how the original movies' slapstick has never been topped or equaled. If you can't do slapstick, it will never work even if you'd get all the other shit.

          Anonymous

I don't think Tom and Jerry work in a movie. Their specialty is in slapstick and physical comedy. The plot is basically an excuse for various gags. It's hard to stretch gags and visual comedy for too long.

The problem is that for visual gags you need good animation, and there isn't the money in animated shorts anymore, so they make movies. but this means the movies either stretch the gags for too long or have a bunch of down time as they move from one gag setpiece to the next.

TL:DR Tom an Jerry are best in shorts.

maybe it could work if its an anthology movie

The most recent Tom and Jerry movie supports this. Giving them a story just does not work, though I did like the overall visuals and their attention to detail. The fact all animals where cartoons, reguardless of who or what was a great detail. The fish market scene really made me wish we got a proper Roger Rabbit movie.

We'd just complain about how the CGi is taking a fat shit on Richard Williams' legacy.

idk what tennis has to do with cartoons but yeah, it is sad. I thought T&J CGI was for the most part pretty good.

It's also not enough to have shorts, you need to have a director who actually knows what makes for a good Tom and Jerry short. Chuck Jones couldn't figure it out somehow.

maybe it could work if its an anthology movie

            It couldn't be long, though.

            Anonymous

I think Tom and Jerry can work in a movie, they just need a set-up that works and a director that understands slapstick comedy. The new movie had an okay set-up that had the potential to string several Tom and Jerry setpieces together into a loose story, but it was killed by weird narrative detours (the human characters, forced emotional bullshit) and a lame comedic structure. Pic related is probably the closest we'll ever get to a faithful, feature-length Tom and Jerry film.

Nutcracker is decent. A surprising percentage of the film abandons dialogue altogether which is how it should be.
Heard Magic Ring is worth it too but I haven't watched it.

          Anonymous

I watched magic ring a frickton back in the day since it was one of the few DVDs we got for that year
Looking back it was fairly mediocre, a standard episode of Tom & Jerry stretched to feature length, so it's basically one extremely drawn out chase
