this movie had no right being this good

>action movie sequel comes out 36 years later
>many people involved with the original are either dying or dead
>project had already been delayed for over 10 years
>co-star had to beg online to get a role in the movie
>it's actually better in just about every conceivable way
>star somehow looks more attractive than he did 36 years ago
>movie is shot beautifully in IMAX with practical effects, will age like fine wine
>totally apolitical yet timeless message

3/10. Build up to the ending as well as the ending was real dumb. Lets compare it to the end of Star Wars A New Hope with the Death Star run
    Star Wars:
    >rebels talk about how the Death Star attack will be a very dangerous mission, borderline suicide
    >numerous pilots die in the attack
    >rebels say that to destroy the Death Star you have to shoot a torpedo into an air shaft. All the pilots say this is impossible but Luke points out "we used to shoot wompa rats no bigger than that"
    >Luke then shoots torpedo through the airshaft
    This is good writing.
    Now here's Top Gun Maverick:
    >Navy admirals and Mav talk about how the attack on the nuclear site will be a very dangerous mission, borderline suicide
    >but don't worry, literally not a single American pilot dies
    >Navy admirals and Mav talk about how their F18s are no match for the 5th gen Russian fighers in a dog fight
    >but don't worry, Mav defeats 2 of these 5th gen fighters with an even older F14 that he stole from a Russian garage (and which clearly wasn't maintained because the ejection hatch didn't work)
    This is poor screenwriting.

        >It's not the plane, it's the pilot.
Nonsense. Even Mav said "we should have F35s against these 5th gens, but since we have to use F18s, we have to avoid dogfighting". The idea that an barely maintained F14 could beat 2 5th gens after Mavs statement is nonsense.

          Anonymous

Barely maintained is bad for any plane.
But, an F14 in good shape is preferable to an F18. The swing wings are automatic and give the pilot incredible advantages in aerodynamics as the performance of the wing is optimized for current airspeed.

            Anonymous

No it doesn't moron. There's a reason why they don't make swing wing jets anymore. You can get better aerodynamic capabilities with an unstable plane and fbw.

              Vectored thrust > dynamic wing. But we are talkingF14 v F18 not F14 v SU57.

                Anonymous

SU57 are the Iranian planes in the movie...

I suggest you read up on why there are dynamic wing planes like the F14, F111, Tornado, B1, MiG23, MiG27, TU22, Tu160, SU24 and others were made.

The F18 was an F16-like concept for the Navy. It was supposed to be lighter, cheaper and smaller than the F14. In fact, it was the Air Force's F16 competitor and it lost. They Navy resurrected it (or was told to by Congress).

Also, the F18 is multirole. It replaced a number of types with one, improving readiness because there are less types to maintain. However, the F18 is a compromise to all of the specialized planes it replaced.

            Anonymous

The Tomcat was shit. It had crappy engines and the swing wings gave away its current state to the opposition. It was all about the Phoenix missiles and nothing else. The real GOAT was the F-15.

          Anonymous

What Mav is alluding to is vectored thrust which is common in 5th gen designs. It allows tighter turns and wired unnatural flight attitudes that traditional fixed thrust can’t match. But the F14 can come closer than most planes with the dynamic wing.

Networking and stealth are the other 2 5th gen attributes and the F14 does not have them.

          Anonymous

SU-57s are not 5th gen and an F-14 deleting them from the sky is totally within the realm of possibility.

It was a mistake using such an obvious real-world design that is known to be compromised and only vaguely looks '5th gen' to fool countries into buying it.

      Anon, you moronic homosexual

The movie literally opens with Cruise testing a brand new jet that can push Mach 10. The ENTIRE point of this opening segment and the point made is
      >You bought your guys some time, but you can't halt the future. Soon we will have computers that can do everything a pilot can do and better.

The rest of the movie is about him unwilling to compromise on completely the mission with every person coming back. The Navy at the start is more than willing to allow the pilots to die in the name of the mission and they repeatedly berate Cruise for making the conditions of the test extra difficult for the sake of MAYBE bringing every pilot back in one piece. He is then successful in convincing everyone by demonstrating himself that it can be done in even tighter parameters than he had set for them.

The ENTIRE theme of the movie is
      >It's not the plane, it's the pilot
This is repeatedly addressed and reinforced.

Giving the characters such increasingly difficult and impossible odds, only for them to prevail or find another solution through last minute improvisation and bold moves is VERY deliberate and on purpose. It's both great tension and it satisfies the audience to see these characters pull a win out of their ass with some tricky 1 in a million maneuvers. Watching them succeed is the movie succeeding in its mission.
      >You think up there, you're dead.
A drone with a computer brain cannot act on instinct.
Everything you've mentioned is deliberately stacking the deck against the heroes so that it's more satisfying when they pay off.

You are either being facetious to troll or you're an autist who genuinely cannot understand viscera. Either way, you certainly don't know dick about good screenwriting. Thank FRICK people like you don't write movies. The cinemas would be even more souless than they are now.

On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of its pilots. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to insure that the handful of men and women who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world.

    They succeeded.

Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it TOPGUN: MAVERICK

    >Why couldn't they name the 5th generation fighter that's so much better than any other plane?

They didn't name the 5th gen fighter because it was obviously a Su 57, a Russian plane, but the enemy forces are intentionally left undefined (like the original film) to avoid stirring shit up with whoever they chose. I guess they still have hope for a release in Russia/China.

    aerospace gay here.
I'm wiling to bet a maintained F14 could hang with any modern 5th gen in combat that close.
5th gens are mostly focused on stealth and sensor fusion, not lower speed performance.
that and SU-57s are gen 4.5 at best and are largely a huge failure.

and yes, that mission would be a cake walk for F35s. but the government gays put a hard foot down on using f35s in the filming because of potential security issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the F/A-18 or the F-14 are capable of many of the maneuvers they're depicted as performing in the movie like the Pugachev Cobra.

        Anonymous

        >Cobra.
f35s can do the Cobra maneuver as well.
but stuff like that is pointless in a stealth jet that will spend it's life tagging targets and sniping people from 500+ miles away

          Anonymous

          >f35s can do the Cobra maneuver as well.
I know they can thanks to their thrust vectoring, but I don't think that either of the planes Maverick is shown performing the maneuver with are actually capable of it.

            Anonymous

            >thrust vectoring
            f35's don't have thrust vectoring.
the VTOL or STOVL f35s don't use their 3d nozzles for acrobatics.
both the f18 or f14 with light load outs are capable of the Cobra

            Anonymous

thrust vectoring is not a hard requirement of doing a cobra. just pulling up into a vertical position, pulling on the brakes and turning down the throttle as low as it will go should theoretically be enough. doing it this way will make your plane still end up higher in elevation than before it started the maneuver though which is shown in the movie. thrust vectoring lets you keep the same elevation.

              Anonymous

Still, it was my understanding that performing it without thrust vectoring required certain aerodynamic parameters which those aircraft didn't have.
It could be they're capable, I'd just never seen or heard of them performing it.

They actually sort of are. Not quite full cobras but they can pull some pretty hard AoA. F-18 can just naturally do it, it’s good at pulling it’s nose around at the expense of losing speed. F-14 with wings fully opened (which never happens normally but Maverick uses the override to open them manually) can also dramatically slow down that way. Nerds have tested it in simulators and F-14 pilots have done it in exercises to dab on F-15s.

I don't tend to like movies like this, but the action and adventure scenes more than made up for it. It basically has a the plot of a boring sports movie about a washed up coach teaching a bunch of brats how to play the game, but here there's real danger for the characters.

Just came back from it. After a decade or horrid, spiteful sequels to films, tv shows and video games, finally we get something that not only respects the original fans but manages to avoid pandering to them too. I was researching Scientology the other day and I was reading a paper by a cult researcher and its way more extreme than most people realize higher level members like Cruise and Miscavige have servants in the Sea Org who work 100 hours a week for room and board and make like 70 bucks a week. If they are ever seriously investigated they would easily be found in breach of human rights abuses and child labor laws, if they weren’t so well connected Cruise himself would likely found guilty of numerous felonies. A bunch of high level church documents including stuff on the OT levels are on WikiLeaks. The researcher I was reading suggested dianetics ultimately creates and is aligned with a psychopathic personality (L Ron Hubbard would unquestionably quality as one and so would Miscavige and probably Cruise as well) as their corrective brainwashing and mental exercises largely involved instilling unquestioning obedience (look for videos of how Tom Cruise behaves towards Miscavige and realize the A-list actor that makes billion dollar movies still follows the internal hierarchy as subservient to the leader)

You do realize that 80% of the Ariel footage is CGI, right? Aside from some reaction shots in canopy with the actors, it's 80% cartoon.

Fa/tv/irgins do not realize the extent to which CGI is subtly placed throughout modern movies.

I watched a few videos like 2 years ago with C.W. Lemoine when the trailer came out. He's a legit fighter pilot and pointed to all the CGI stuff. Can't wait to see his new videos now that the film is finally out. There are a few videos also with effects guys showing how they matted some of this for the new film. Reaction shots are real. But the Ariel combat in the film violates American laws and the Navy would not allow them to even try it.

      Anonymous

Most fights involving aircraft take place over many many miles these days, outside of visual range. That means radar and target acquisition is incredibly important, so the stealth technology that the F35 uses to hide from target acquisition systems is incredibly important. Additionally, the plane comes in a cheaper package than an F22 and is more versatile, since the F22 is a designated air superiority fighter. A 35 can do air superiority, but it also has ground strike capabilities which makes it more useful for a wide variety of missions.
Basically, cheaper and more versatile stealth alternative to the very specialized F22. Think F16 vs F15 but with stealth.

        >Basically the wal-mart version of the F-22
the f35 performs well against the f22 in practice situations. still loses, but what do you expect, it's an all purpose fighter. still beats the shit out of every non-nato countries aircraft arsenal.

F-22's are not carrier capable, and there's no point in using the vertical takeoff variant (with less range and armament) if you have catapults

Too cheesy even for this movie, I suppose. The irony of someone called Hangman saving the day is good enough, they don't need to ham it up.

I'm saying it's not, moron. Attacking a nation because they do what you do while not being a part of NATO is pure globohomo.

The movie makes it clear they are bad guys up to no good. Bad guys DO exist in the world, you know. You're applying the gray sort of morality that the leftist you hate love so much.

We're the good guys and anyone who says otherwise is a seething third-worlder. This is not a joke.

Making the world a better place doesn’t mean better for everyone. Woe to the vanquished.

    Yes it did
Its making me feel old...but this is what movies used to be like. They wanted to tell a story so got some actors, a story, some sets, planes etc...and filmed it. This is what is missing from so many movies today. Its not a CGI monstrosity, and lots of young people havent every really gotten to experience a real move like this in a theater
