This movie was a real and godawful mistake. Easily the worst or the second worst Illumination movie ever.

This movie was a real and godawful mistake. Easily the worst or the second worst Illumination movie ever. And I enjoyed Minions The Rise of Gru. And easily the worst animated movie of 2023 by far. Serious Razzie contender.

It was fine. I mean it played it safe, everything was pretty straight forward for the Mario elements other than Peach's character being overhauled to hyper-competent leader.

Points I have against it being
-With Peach not being a damsel in distress, we instead have Luigi locked up for most of the runtime instead of the Mario Bros being together onscreen
-The DK portion takes up a lot of time, Cranky being some king is weird, the whole Kong Army thing ends up amounting to nothing
-The Star seemed like it'd be a SM64/Galaxy Power Star and be a bigger deal, and it was just a one-time use Starman that Bowser was too dumb to keep around and not use himself

      >Cranky being some king is weird
Cranky being anyone but Tracey Morgan was weird.

Cranky IS the King of Donkey Kong Island, he just normally dresses in a sweater vest because he's a swell guy.

Like you can make a lot of extremely valid complaints but they nailed the Donkey Kong mythos

I cannot wait for this movie to finally be collectively viewed as bad. Like Detective Pikachu before it, people will defend any pile of shit video game movie if it has references and the characters look decently accurate, but ignore everything else.

They'll never fricking admit Peach was awful though. Their only complaint for her will always be that she wasn't awful ENOUGH.

Definitely made her dull and generic as frick.
I was able to tolerate it up until she more or less freed herself and beat Bowser on her own by freezing him. At that point it was like, why?

She’s basically the Peach from Mario Adventures, dude. This isn’t new.

The movie wasn't great, I hated the celeb voice cast, the "on the nose" licensed music placement and how safe and boring it was. I think I enjoyed the Mario family drama at the beginning of the movie more than anything though. I did think Koopa was pretty entertaining. My kid loved every fricking second so mission accomplished.

The SMA version, while being a badass, isn't invincible and still needs saved at the end. She also shows off some major cleavage towards the end. The movie version is irritatingly hyper-competent. She never really needs Mario's help at all. Just for the giant Banzai Bill at the very end. It makes you wonder why she drags him along at all.

Detective Pikachu had Ryan Reynolds carrying it the whole way, and his unholy bullshit charisma kept the movie out of people's "hate it" pile until they actually thought back on what the frick they'd watched.
SMB has too much unmedicated tiktok zoomer energy to give anyone a chance to carry it, as hard as Jack Black was clearly trying.

It was terrible, but people baseded out for it, so we'll get tons of these reference heavy advertisement movies moving forward.

But Wish flopped hard, so...Btw, Wish is immensely mediocre, and still is better than Mario.

Wish is based on a new brand. just like any original movie that wasn't based from german books

Keep spewing out bullshit Anon it’s a fun, harmless kid’s movie. If you can’t enjoy a fun time kids film maybe don’t watch things meant for kids. There’s a reason this’s the number 1 movie on Netflix.

Still better than Sonic 2. That is one of the unfunniest and corniest films i've ever seen.

Oh god no. I respect not liking the movie, but Illumination has put a LOT of shit over the years. Mario is nowhere near the level of something like Hop.

    Haven't read the replies.
    My kids loved it
I think it was pretty fun. All the references made sense and were written in well enough. Nothing felt shoehorned. I thought the obstacle course was pretty cute. Peach was written with an appropriate power level without being a mary sue.

Are people still harping on Peach? She constantly depended on and then fell in love with Mario why would you need anything else?

Who cares about Peach being a Mary Sue? She's not even human. They blatantly foreshadowed that she's related to Rosalina.
