People don't use holo-shields in the desert because it attracts worm. iirc there's a scene after the first half of the book where Thufir Hawat & co (?) ambush a couple of Harkonnens by using this exact reasoning

That still makes no sense, if every patrol you send out is completely btfo the moment they encounter enemies with 0 losses then you're fighting a complete desperate and unwinnable war. It's simply insanity to keep sending out soldiers if there is a 0% in victory. Every war is fought because there are losses on both side, but if it's so one sided people would simply just stop fighting. It's fricking moronic. It makes the movie stupid and illogical. And sure the harkonnen were "evil" but i guess i missed where they are all 50 iq moronic...

          Anonymous

And while we are at it, this whole movie pissed me off in that aspect. You never see the harkonnen do anything but lose, but then the homosexual little brother comes and just nukes the home of the people they apparently always knew where it was. Couldn't you have done that sooner or what? It just betrays every logic you have and makes the movie nonsensical and just events that happen in succession because the script dictates it and not because events organically follow each other.

The harkonnens frick up the fremen all the time - if you rewatch the first five minutes of the first movie you'll see them completely btfoing most of the fremen raids.

          >if every patrol you send out
It's not every patrol, though, as it's mentioned a few times that Feyd-Rautha is able to get spice harvesting up to the quota. It's just the ones we see because there is no reason for us to see times when the Harkonnen's go out, collect spice, and return and nothing happens.

Arrakis is the only place in the known universe where Spice can be found.
Spice is absolutely necessary for interstellar travel. Without it, the Imperium ceases to exist because it will be impossible for the Guild Navigators to see where to go. Without it, the Imperium ceases to exist.

The Imperium giving up Arrakis would be roughly like if every single source of oil and gas on Earth just disappeared.

The Harkonnen were a bunch of weirdo sadistis addicted psychopaths. At least thats what i derived from the movies/shows but i've never actually read the books and have only read the "cliff notes".. Either way the story is pretty extensive and a well written book/series from listening to youtubers "recap" the books. I'd like to dive into one of them but by now I already know so much about the plot and story line that to me that actually will probably make the books even MORE enjoyable and understandable.

Because if they do they'll be disobeying the Emperor, which will give the Emperor a valid excuse to punish them in a way that the Great Houses won't retaliate against.

I'd rather see a HBO type production show of the entire 6 books. Ones that actually EXPLAIN what the frick is happening and how this all began. And in 2024 there is no greater oppurtunity to such a project that shocks me what the tv execs are thinking right now? Why not make this Dune show and actually explain how AI almost destroyed humanity.... hmm I bet OpenAI and the rest would throw billions to kill such a project. That is why even to this day no one even knows anything about the real story of Dune unless they've read the books or at least listened to distilled cliff note audio versions (for most resonable people to do) found all over youtube. The way every show and movie of Dune has been made has been confusing at best and boring at worst.

I just got done watched Dune: Part 2 and after watching it with my pops he told me about the "books i need to read" that he read when he was younger to really understand the whole story line. Therefore I did what I know best as a millenial master researcher and found several youtubve videos within less then 10 mins and determined within about 4 mins this is one of the most complete videos to watch 6 books distilled down into a 40+min video/audio listening. After watching the first 2 confusing and boring movies I now know everything and also see how badly they failed at putting any of these books to film in recorded history of film itself. Time to let me do my Dune HBO series, ill do it for free too, pay if you wish.

i agree that its insane that they had basically another game of thrones tv show on their hands and they just made a series of movies instead, fricking bonkers.

that being said, the butlerian jihad wasn't a backlash against AI per se, it was a response to human beings using computers to subjugate other humans. it wasn't some terminator or matrix shit.

You know what else is interesting. I wonder if Frank was a theraputic user of DMT and/or LSD and cocaine (like legit pharma grade coke, just by the way he describes how spice effects ones person psyche but then at the same time extrapolates that this "cocaine type psychedeliic" has w/ds are akin to opiate, benzo, barbituatue and/or alcohol withdrawals all wrapped into one hellish withdrawals Frank could only say this about spice withdrawals "hell itself".. I really wish I knew more about what drugs influenced his writtings of these books, obviously used in theraputic doses and safe doses at most but still I am think LSD or more likely DMT with a fiction of barbituate/alcohol/opiate withdrawals wrapped into one horrific condition.

      Anonymous

      How is that interesting?
It was written in 1965, when psychedelics were becoming very mainstream. Of course he used LSD among other drugs and of course the spice was a reference to that

Your comment is exactly why it is interesting to me. I heard the cliff notes of the books and how he writes and the time it was written in. I guess one could conclude in some Hollywood gloified way Frank wrote these books with a highly intelligent and creative mind about sci-fi while also imbiding in such drugs as LSD, DMT, Cocaine, and of course alcohol and nicotine like 99% of society. I'm thinking its more of a DMT type fictional substance that also incorporates cocaine HCI effects with also opium visions (anyone who's done real opium tea or smoked it know what I mean) all rolled into the story of "spice" in his sci-fi novel. I also like how he warns about AI before AI was even a "thing".

edit: And also basically = to oil in todays world. Spice is the only thing that keeps commerece flowing after the destruction of the AI "Thinking machines" that almost destroyed humanity due to apathy and ignorance.
