        what flaws

this could have been a good show but the director's/writers's nasty fetishes ruined everything.

        what fetishes

no it didnt, made it look wasteful and pointless

bombing around in trucks singing teenage dirtbag and shooting people seems pretty fun
having to fill out paperwork afterwards not so much

        >Performing progressively stupider and stupider maneuvers to satisfy an officer's desire for recognition and only surviving because of the sheer incompetence of the enemy is awesome.
Well anon, at least you help us understand how the Marines have managed to survive as a volunteer-only organization.

        >I'd rather be a real soldier in a real army that performs sensible manoeuvres in a justifiable war that materially advances the national interest
        glhf

        >wow that european tyrant is going on a conquest spree to distract his people from his poor rulership
        >certainly this will peter out on it's own, and never effect us here in america.

        >to distract his people from his poor rulership
literally the purpose of american involvement everywhere

The marines are over as soon as they have to do anything without an A-10 bailing their asses out. No aircrew will want to run fire support against a crew with a mortar and a PKM when a chink drone will shoot down a slow as shit warthog no problem.

People love to shit talk about how powerful our military is but I really doubt Americans have the stomach for fighting a peer conflict like Ukraine-Russia.

It's pretty stupid to do that. I get nothing out of it. Some israelite at Raytheon is the only person who benefits. Letting other countries sort out their minor border disputes themselves saves more lives than gassing everyone up for a protracted war. So of course we don't want that

Luckily it seems the psychos up top understand that and have just increased special forces operations. Which is kinda just outsourcing our military to thirdies but fine by me

quick question anon: when did the war in ukraine start? what was its inciting incident? what other incidents occurred just before that incident, and who were they funded/backed by?

I could hold a mirror up and that statement works directed at us. Investments and economic activity are the solution, not killing. If you want to blow up brown people go ahead. That's your thing. Destabilizing eastern Europe tends to get us involved when it's unnecessary

I consider the air support part of a combat system that's proven to work. Of course they want to get rid of it so they can replace it with something more wasteful. A ground controlled close air support drone is inevitable in the next war. Drone helicopters with encrypted line of sight and radar controls will do some interesting things to the battle equation

Smart thinking but the marines are the redheaded stepchild of grunts. Without a hint of irony or malice RIP to all the marine 03 grunts who will get slaughtered and crippled before anti drone advancements trickle down to them just like in iraq and afghanistan with ieds. Remember one of saving graces in the sandbox is that having nvgs and thermals meant you could cat every moron that tried to hide in the dark and plant ieds.

Artillery spotter drones should already be a thing. Paint an area and fire. Lots of stuff like that

I hate to akshually you, since I don't disagree with your fundamental position, but I highly doubt drones are going to be overly important in air combat until they're able to outfit proper aircraft with them. Things like Reapers/Predators are huge and poorly maneuverable, and anything recreation sized is not going to be able to port a missile. So AA drones are going to get caught by AWACS and HARM'd. Economy of force is likely in the drone's favor, but since when has the MIC ever cared about putting tax dollars to good use?

The only thing that made it look awesome was just hanging around with the boys and the dumb hijinks that happen, which is what the military is like. But it demonstrates how everything they were doing was stupid and pointless, and no one knew what was really happening

They were dying over the ego trip of low level military brass. Chaos was looking for an excuse to get into battles that weren't necessary. McNamara was the same way.

Mattis' deployments make 'sense' if you consider the traditional tenets of maneuver warfare calling for overwhelming force and expedient destruction of enemy forces and infrastructure where possible.
They make less sense when you get into the resources he actually had to accomplish this, and the show outright states the stupidity of his effort to decimate the Iraqi army as an institution when there's recon marines strongpointing a city in humvees.
            Iraq/Afghanistan were moronic conflicts.

Nah, I enjoy it more now. It's interesting to see what kind of messaging was coming out of professional writer rooms at any given time. Norther Exposure is another great show from a bygone era. 1990
First episode is its own little contained movie about a small minded israeli doctor who gets tricked by a hand wringing anglo executive to be the town doctor for a bunch of chugs and hillbillies. They are all flawed weirdos and he openly degrades and judges them and people mention how his israeliness blinds him to the good aspects of Alaska. There are two 60 year old men one an astronaut and the other a mountain man who are in a love triangle with a teenage girl. There's a whole episode about Walt Whitman being a gay but we should ignore his perversions and respect his art even if he spent his days as a bum walking around pining for straight dudes to plow his ass.

Joel Fleischmann hates Alaska but he sees something in a little schiksa drug addict bush pilot. She starts to take an interest in him because he seems soft and she is pretty sure she can score some pills from him. He wants to make some time with the girl so he writes her a script for Darvon and their romance begins.

    It's great.

Swarms of cheap intert seeker drones are a thing as well. Say the enemy sends in a fast moving hunter killer drone. Carry csnnisters of little palm sized drones that find motion outside a certain perimeter and if they see something move they swarm it. That's all it takes to remove the advantage of the current drones

Out of all of HBOs violent realism shows from the 90s-2000s, this one is the best by far.
It's a shame that there's only 1 short season and that realistically even if they did want to make more they could only get away with maybe 3 or 4 episodes more than they did, because I'd wager this is the last truly great thing HBO ever did.

This liberal propaganda's popular on this board because every millennial here likes to power fantasy self-insert themselves as that sassy corporal. In reality, it's a preachy journalist trying to dress up a nothingburger assignment embedded with some guys who didn't see shit. It's like Jarhead without the self awareness and a sermon every episode.

I wouldnt go that far but its fricking wild to think the only time they actually saw any shit was when mattis sent them into fricking ambushes in broad daylight and they only survived through dumb luck and the incompetence of the iraqis. Also laugh at them acting like trombley was the weirdo for getting any action during the op on the empty airfield.
