It’s fricking garbage. Please show me where in the curent established canon Vader letting someone who betray him alive, TWICE.
The entire show was written as vehicle to give a redemption arch to some character we never heard of and universally disliked.

He stabbed her in the gut and left her to die in an empty ruined base. He didn't spare her.

The Obi Wan show is pretty pointless - It doesn't hold a candle to the Mandalorian, but I never felt it was insulting Star Wars like the sequel trilogy did.

She's been impaled twice in the gut BY THE SAME GUY, yet she'll live. She stabbed the grand inquisitor in the gut and he lived. THREE TIMES IN ONE SHOW GUT IMPALEMENT FAILS TO KILL. Apparently no important organs got cooked and the area around it didn't heat up and fry either.

Sabers are inconsistent anyway. They can hold a handle that's 1-2 inches away from plasma that's a few thousand degrees, it slices metal and people like butter, but it can also be used to liquefy hardened blast doors, but also cuts hardened blast doors like butter.

Yes, because Darth Vader usually just inflicts a minor wound and figures "Eh, they'll probably die from that." Especially failed and traitorous underlings. He doesn't Force choke them until they're dead or divide them into various fractions with his lightsaber. Nosirree.

That's literally what happens though. He can't put NO effort in at all, that wouldn't be interesting to watch, but the entire fight exudes "Stop trying to hit me and hit me!" She doesn't even get in a lucky hit that makes him say something like "That won't happen again."

Its impossible to make a good looking laser sword fight because
              1. medieval sword combat wasnt a guy fighting a guy both using a longsword without armor or shield because it would be moronic
              2. if you swing 2 longswords without guards at each other theres gonna be fingers flying around
              3. the moment you overpower your opponent with strength or speed the fight ends from a deadly would being inflicted because they have no armor or shield and laser sword enters your body
              4. you can kamikaze kill your opponent because they have no armor or way to block your weapon if youre unafraid of bodily injury
              5. doing shit like like micheal tyson dodging punches or rolling around isn't an option, a leveraged stick moves a bit faster at the tip than you can react to and your only option is staying away from strike range and immediately move back when opponent makes a move and doing. It'd be like https://youtu.be/nGearEu2PlU where the fight ends 1.5seconds after round start.
              6. force powers can do everything and nothing at the same time so who cares
              7. a realistic fight is never going to be shown because of how dull the concept is
              8. just pull a gun and start shooting, what the frick is wrong with guns in sw?

You miss the main point of lightsaber duels.
Using the Force gives you basically limited precog powers so you can anticipate and counter an attack and it's honed until you do it intuitively. You essentially have to use the Force to COUNTER the other person supernaturally anticipating your moves.
If two opponents are equal or close to it the duel will be drawn out since neither one can out-Force the other, but if one of the combatants is vastly superior there's nothing the other can do.
That's also why only the jedi can fully utilize the lightsaber as a weapon despite the obvious dangers of handling it. They "see" how to use it effectively through the Force.

In Vader vs Reva's case, there simply nothing Reva can do to outdo Vader. It's impossible since he's so far above the in Force powers he can see all her moves way in advance and she can't "see" his so he's just toying with her for a bit sadistically.

                >just pull a gun and start shooting, what the frick is wrong with guns in sw?
Blaster bolts can very easily be blocked/reflected with lightsabers or caught with the Force, that's what.

Different contexts and writers. Still, I fail to see a problem with the fight scene aside from the fact that he "killed" her in the dumbest way possible, practically ensuring she'd survive.
Vader himself was accurate to how he would handle such a fight in it's progression, but didn't end it appropriately.

it's just people slowly walking through hallways having inane conversations in shot-reverse-shot while genuinely moronic things are constantly happening in the story, punctuated by perhaps the most idiotic scene in history; whatherface dying of a broken heart and then he goes NOOOOOOOOOO. if you saw that out of context tell me you wouldn't believe it was satire.

they're fricking so bad, I think you're just fricking with me and pretending to think otherwise
not that it isn't okay to like "bad" movies, I like bad movies, but at least I recognize that they're bad. Mutant Chronicles is a shit movie, I still like it. I liked that other one with thomas jane too, "I Frankenstein" or something. that movie is great.

but the prequels don't even ham it up enough to be enjoyed for how absurd they are, they're just fricking boring as all hell throughout

Dude just stands there, passively, zero indication that the actor has the slightest clue about what his character is supposed to be seeing. If he hadn't READ THE SCRIPT and KNOWN that he wouldn't be getting cut down, he would've gotten cut down right there.

Too much CGI, two actors sitting in a green room badly reacting to things they can't see or have props for. Stilted dialog is a pain. The 'romance' is non-existent.

I do like the story underneath. Can't ever give it more than a 5/10.

'Badly reacting' how so? What makes them bad? There were tons of practical sets for the prequels, but yes there was a lot of blue screen as well. But all the actors who weren't literal kids did fine. The romance was fine. Some scenes were better than others.

    >"I mean, there are of course more stories that you could tell. There's obviously another 10 years before we get to A New Hope and with a character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, I think even just watching him ride across the sand sometimes is interesting.

    Look at that last part.
"and with a character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, I think even just watching him ride across the sand sometimes is interesting."

What I don't get about this is that Disney knows that normies are going to watch this shit no matter what. So why not give the creative power to fans who will make something the actual hardcore fans want to see? The whole reason Mando worked out is because Disney fricked off and let Star Wars fans make a Star Wars show.

I don't think the Grand Inquisitor getting stabbed was part of a plan. I mean obviously someone had to pick him up and take him to the Emperor Palpatine Emergency Medical Reconstruction Center and heal him so he didn't die, so he probably told Vader what happened once he had recuperated and they worked from there.

Still very dumb to leave her operating whilst pretending to not know she's soon to take a stab at vader. They know her background and had eyes on her. Just an all round strange thing for the two of them to do. Vader normally just kills traitors, but this time he played along.

The scene with Owen telling of Obi-Wan at the beginning was kind of good.

I would have liked to see more about that relationship in the show. I'd like to see how what should be a tense and awkward relationship settles into the cold and distant one we see in ANH. That one scene kind of skipped all that, but looking back, that one scrap of backstory is one of the only things in the show that made me feel like learned something I want to know.

        >The scene with Owen telling of Obi-Wan at the beginning was kind of good.
It was shit. And made no sense
        >Obi Wan tells a random Jedi that the war is lost and to bury his lightsaber
        >next scene he tells Owen "I will have to train Luke soon!"
Uh...so why train Luke if the war is over? And when was this training going to take place? Luke only got trained in ANH because he got the R2 droid. Obi Wan didn't seem to be any hurry in training him before that. And even Yoda said that Luke was too old in ESB.

I don't even strongly disagree. I'm just trying to come up with any moments that were worth watching unironically, and the closest I can come up with are that scene and Vader shitting on the black chick.

          >so why train Luke if the war is over?
For one thing, he could ensure he doesn't turn to the dark side if he teaches him the way of the Jedi, and thus he would prevent a second Vader.
It's clear this is a source of embarrassment for Kenobi.

Just watched the newest episode. Ewan seems like he doesn't give a frick, which he probably doesn't to be honest. First episode was serviceable. Every single episode has been shit since. Kid Leia was a fricking horrible decision, and it looks like bringing kid Luke into the mix is the next move. All the alien makeup looks like absolute shit. That one fat mole guy that picked up Kenobi and Leia took the cake for the absolute worst costume I have ever seen by a multi-million dollar production. When Kenobi knocked mole guy out, he literally tumbled over in a way that suggested the actor thought they were going to cut away. And they fricking didn't, they just left it in. What a complete shit show.

The writing was horrible and made adults look like idiots while making a little girl seemed like she had better reasoning abilities than her guardian adults. The "grrl power" shit was insulting as well seeing as how everybody knows any random 15 year old boy can push the shit in of any woman. The plots were dumb as frick, inconsistent, and forgettable.

I dunno, I haven't thought Leia has come off as smart or reasonable at any point after she told off her cousin for dissing droids. She's been a usual Stupid Movie Child That Causes Problems For Everyone™ pretty much ever since.

They're clearly trying to have it both ways. Like when they get a ride from the mole man with the truck. Obi-wan is all
        >buh buh don't talk to him I'm scawed
        then Leia is all
        >Excuse me sir, may I weave a touching backstory off the top of my head to prove that I'm savvy and my Jedi Master protector is a coward?
        then Obi-wan goes
        >Durr hur whoops I spoiled our cover in front of the stormtroopers
The mole guy betrays them but it's all just plot railroad anyways.

Then there's the interrogation scene where she comes up with a promising bluff. And also she gets complimented for being "so strong willed."

It's all bullshit where she does in fact frick a bunch of things up by being oblivious, but at the same time, every time she makes a decision the show presents it as spunky and brave. That's how it reads to me, at least, but I could just be oversensitive to the tropes of terrible feminist writing.

I'm going to Tatooine to see how Leia's twin brother Luke Skywalker is getting along at Owen and Beru's farm. I can never remember if the address is 175 West Judland Blvd. or 176, but it's out past Tosche station so how hard can it be to find? Anyway I sent a few dozen of these message pucks out across the galaxy to let you know I'm keeping a low profile to avoid the watchful eye of Luke and Leia's dad, Darth Vader. Still crazy to me how he used to be Anakin Skywalker. Oh well, hope you're doing good, haven't heard anything from the Emperor, think we've really got him fooled this time!

Yeah, wtf. They didn't even set it up properly. It was "I put a tracker on Leia's toy droid--I mean Obi-Wan." Then next episode, it's not just a homing device, but programming sophisticated enough to detect when it's in an important hangar, find a way to disable egress, and do so without detection.

Also, they have no clue why the doors shut, but he says "It'll take 3-4 hours to fix." For all he knows, some kid sat on the button. And he hasn't even attempted a diagnoses yet. But he needs 3 hours, (and "You've got one hour!" wow, so this is what new frontiers of scriptwriting brilliance look like).

And then Leia volunteers to go in to the vents and see what the problem is, and no one even asks the 10 year old girl if she knows enough about hangar control system repair to even be helpful. "You trust me and I trust her", says Obi-Wan, apparently confident that she's a certified electrician.

But who needs established skillsets when you've got girl power, right?

The majority of people are like that and are find most things enjoyable regardless of quality. Also I know people hate RLM but to quote them:
      >DON'T ASK QUESTIONS, JUST CONSUME PRODUCT AND THEN GET EXCITED FOR NEXT PRODUCT
Streaming is just built for overhyped "big event television" that is also so bland that it then prepares you for the next slop on the plate, all to keep you subscribed. Notice how many blockbusters now just come and go? Nothing leaving a huge impact anymore? Literally all discussion gone after a month if that? Everything needs to be the MCU, everything needs to be a franchise, everything needs to make big bucks. Mid budget films are gone because everything needs to be huge budget tentpole blockbuster or gimmicky universe franchise to appeal to zoomer FOMO.

Vader has never just straight up snapped someones neck or dragged them around in the movies, its not his style. He's always used a choke hold, even before he was in the suit, thats a Vader staple (slow, agonizing pain), he frequently used it as a tool for channelling his anger in that specific way, slowly. It fit Vaders character well, plus 3 out of the 4 of the quotes you presented were said either before or after Vader choked someone.

                Different situations.

With imperial officers he wants to make a point, not cause permanent damage (unless he wants to kill them).
Why would he even bother slowly choking some dirty peasants on some shithole planet.

                >Why would he even bother slowly choking some dirty peasants on some shithole planet
Because that's what Darth Vader does, choke fools. The situation makes no difference. He could have just as easily choked the person to instill fear in others and to motivate them to talk out of that fear or in an attempt to extract the information out of the target directly like Captain Antilles in Episode IV, or for what the purpose of that scene actually was ( to draw Obi-Wan out), that would have made sense for Vaders character and worked just as well.

None of that means that Vader ISN'T a big angry robot that everyone should be scared of. He's literally always been that. And if you're complaining that Vader usually shows more patience and planning, again, that's literally what he just did with Reva. He's been playing her ever since, at the very least, she tried to kill the Grand Inquisitor.

                Anonymous

                >He's literally always been that
But never just that, thats the problem and thats mostly how he's been shown because of the lack of decent dailogue he's been given to give his more overtly violent actions meaning.
                >that's literally what he just did with Reva. He's been playing her ever since, at the very least, she tried to kill the Grand Inquisitor
And that was all told after the fact, in one line of dailogue, to explain away the lack of Vader actually doing or saying anything of substance or anything that shows that this guy in a suit is Darth Vader.

Vader's portrayal in this show has been pretty bad imo, instead of having actual dialogue it feels like all of his lines are supposed to be epic one liners and he's not actually conversing with others, little things like the way he moves and his mannerisms don't match his OT appearances and Rogue One at all ( even in Rogue One he had back and forth dailogue with Krennic that sounded like an actual conversation and the way he fought the rebels at the end was very faithful to the way he moved in the OT), the way it has been done doesn't sell to me that this is Darth Vader, I guess it's more like "this is Anakin in a suit" but it's very jarring giving that there was no development of that idea until just the last episode and even then that was a flashback, not something in the current context of the events of the series.

Apparently, from what I've read, they aren't having James Earl Jones just read his lines naturally, they're having Hayden Christensen say the lines on set and then having James Earl Jones match his delivery, which is... not the greatest strategy...

I feel the exact opposite. I think his back-and-forth in this show feels like a "normal" conversation far more than the R1 stuff.

It just makes sense that the inquisitors fear and revere him and he wants to maintain that aura.
He's not their buddy-buddy boss, he's someone that can kill them on the spot if they disobey him or even step out of line.
The only reason he allowed Reva to talk shit is because he was using her the entire time.

Basically the inquisitors are his lackey slaves and Krennic and later Tarkin and the imperial high brass are on a different level and are handled with a different tone.

  57. 2 years ago

I just can't help but think that the direction is total shit because the person in charge simply has no any kind of sensibility for a space opera setting.

One example from the latest episode is the "attack" on the rebel base or whatever it is, hangar I guess.

iirc Vader is all "commence the assault" and then you see these two feeble tiny craft departing for the surface. The visual language of it is just really really weak. It doesn't not look like any kind of assault and instead just some diplomatic shuttle departing. It has no punch to it to match the lines.
Then the stormtroopers just appear, all standing still in this anemic formation in front of a giant door. No geography of the planet is shown or established, no "alien planet" flavor, just them on a flat obviously fake stage standing in front of the door, idling.
Then one of them gets the big gun out and start shooting at the same spot. It just looks absolutely atrocious and pathetic. This is the best Vader can muster up? A couple dozen stormtroopers standing around while one of them shoots a big gun at a door? And he's after his nemesis? C'mon.
Then we cut to the inside where the "rebels" are just sort of standing around, again idling and complaining about shit. There's no sense of immediate danger or them running around doing stuff and fussing with equipment. No we get some oaf saying "I can't get shit done" and everyone just shrugs their shoulders. Same sort of anemic inert presentation and it again looks like some flat, featureless sound stage.

When the stormtroopers finally breach the door and get in they get into a firefight with the rebels where they stand like ... 10 feet away from each other and just shoot in this mundane way where every 50 shots fired they hit one person. It just looks horrible. No action is conveyed at all. It just looks so flat and uninspired.

Same kind of weak presentation was used in the Vader vs Kenobi fight in a previous episode. Zero stakes with everyone sleepwalking around

The directing is a major problem. It's absolutely abysmal. And the same director did all 6 episodes so the problems are persistent. Absolute inability to direct action

How did RLM not make the very obvious joke that it was just O K (Obi wan Kenobi). It was right there.

Better than most things coming out and better than 80% of Star Wars shows/movies but that doesn't make it good

My main complaint was the inquisitor was going to have a "wow, she was so cool" end to her character. Now that the show came around and said she wasn't, it's just an average show that could have done more.

I thought the inquisitor's arc was predictable but also made a solid amount of sense from a storytelling perspective; I'm not sure what else they could've done with the character. I would've preferred subtle foreshadowing rather than an emotional ejaculation to reveal her motives. Obi Wan vs Anakin fight was well choreographed, I'm surprised more anons aren't complimenting it

Slow motion scenes where Obi Wan is fighting and calling a character's name repeatedly is such fricking catastrophically bad cinematograpy I'm actually amazed they fricked it up so hard. Battle at the door was furthermore fricking stupid because both sides didn't use cover

Nigress vs Vader had a bit too many acrobatics on her part, but was maybe the first time in all Star Wars the force got used in a fight like it should've, 9/10

Verdict: Miles better than all the sequels. We'll likely look back on the series more fondly than we regard it now. Thanks for reading my review
