>DDL is the only good performance in the whole piece
Boss Tweed, McGloin, and Gleeson's character, were all enjoyable. In addition to countless background/world building performances as is typical of Scorsese.
My theory is that they spent so much money and time on the sets that the production couldn’t bear to cut or not shoot scenes. Seriously, this movie is such a fricking slog; if someone made an edit that brought the runtime down to 90-120 minutes maximum it might be bearable. Also Leo sucks in this.
It's another one of those movies where the intro absolutely kicks ass and the rest of the movie is a slog. Watch these two videos and you've seen the best parts of it.
I still don't know what they were trying to do with the race rioters at the end. They make them out to be objectively wrong and bad but then their deaths are slow-motion with sad orchestra music playing.
what was the point of Cameron Diaz character? she was completely useless aside from motivating that guy to betray DiCaprio which was frankly a moronic motivation by itself
it felt like an arbitrary love story for the sake of it, but it was poorly written and uninteresting
DiCaprio's character was also not that engaging
this is big problem considering how cartoonish the whole plot and style is, the film is essentially a live-action graphic novel set in the Civil War era, which is conceptually pretty interesting, but also requires eclectic characters, yet the only character that actually had any presence and felt like he was straight from a comic book page was The Butcher, DDL carried the movie
the pacing was also way off, the first half, the set up before DiCaprio gets outed as the son of the priest, was quite uneventful yet drawn out, while the second half was shorter yet Scorsese tried to cram a shit ton of events into it, very poor decision
The last third is so egregious. The Civil War aspect just pops up, and suddenly becomes a big deal (or rather it is PORTRAYED as a big deal) even tho it was only barely, scarcely set up before. It also amasses to nothing. Whatever Scorcese wanted to do with his parallel of anti-draft protesting and gang violence does not translate. It just feels like he used the backdrop of riots as a way to have Amsterdam defeat The Butcher easily. Which is kinda pathetic. An entire fricking historical happening being a crutch for a petty revenge story?
>Why ever would they shoehorn DiCaprio? And a shitty unnecessary romance with a fiery redheaded woman? And a silly made-up plot that reduces actual, interesting, tragic history to a farcical backdrop???
What a Titanic mystery.
I like it. The early New York setting is cool as frick, DDL is tremendous and steals every scene, and the ending is kino. Its just a shame Diaz and Leo aren't up to DDLs level; Diaz feels completely miscast, and Leo, who is normally a great actor, feels oddly out of his element here. Its like he doesn't want to be in the film at all.
Its uneven but the good outweighs the bad; It certainly doesn't deserve to be called bad.

Normalgays hate it because it accurately depicts how most people fighting for the Union didn't care about slavery, how politicians manipulate immigrants for votes, how the Democrats were always the party of the wealthy and elite, and how the government will use force and kill civilians to force you to die in meaningless war.
I never, not once, saw anyone who didn't like the film complain about this /misc/yp crap. In fact, most wouldn't even notice because the way the film is structured is a complete fricking mess. And that's (along with atrocious character work aside from The Butcher) are always the complaints.
>terrible acting
>terrible sets
>terrible cinematography
>terrible directing
Scorsese's worst
it was essentially 9/11 NYC propaganda
It's clear Scorsese didn't want to make it but probably Harvey forced him to.
DDL was kino
DDL is the only good performance in the whole piece.
The costumes were laughably cheap, it felt like a stage play of Great Expectations
I am a cinema snob and love DDL and I hate Gangs

It was great
Hearing normies say they don't like this movie has always confused me. Is it similar to hating nickleback?

You sound like you have autism
All I remember was the shrieking vampire lady
It's kino and OP is a homosexual with pleb tastes.
It's garbage and OP is a Chad with patrician tastes.
I liked it.

I was optimistic until Leo showed up but I stuck it out
When the first credit rolled, I realized the problem. DDL was fun at least.
Basically this
>close up of child actor
>can clearly see him mouthing the other actor's words
what the hell, marty
I liked it and have rewatched it more than once. If you don't like it that's fine, don't care.
Leo and Diaz is the hint its going to be trash.
It's almost impressive how bad Cameron Diaz is in it
Even DDL hamming it up to the max couldn't save it
>Bill the butcher : Catholic immigrants are nothing but criminal degenerate scumbags
>Martin Scorsese: Ermm.. this is le bad!
>Martin Scorcese, a Catholic, built his entire career on glorifying criminal scumbag degenerate behavior
It's like poetry, it uhhh rhymes
i thought it was hard carried by Daniel Day Lewis
he was excellent as always and i miss him
I thought the guy on the right was a kino character and i liked the final battle, but other than that i don't remember nothing.
I remember thinking the editing was a fricking mess. Like it wasn’t actually finished.
I still don't know what they were trying to do with the race rioters at the end. They make them out to be objectively wrong and bad but then their deaths are slow-motion with sad orchestra music playing.
The costumes were particularly egregious.
For some reason this is one of my go to comfort movies and you all making fun of it makes me sad
I wish there were more kinos in this era that weren't just Civil War battles.

No plot points felt particularly well set up or resolved interestingly. A bunch of shit happens, then it ends.

Yes it did. But it's only a misstep in Scorcese's career so it's not a big deal.
DDL is such an embarrassing meme, outside of normies who don't watch many films, I don't see why anybody considers him noteworthy.
wtf is DDL?
