I heard Zurg is actually Buzz instead of being his father. Why did they make that decision? The whole joke was that Buzz's family. was a parody of Luke Skywalker

I don't have any insider knowledge but I think they changed it because this movie is just about Buzz himself learning to cope with his failings and move on. When Buzz jumps forward into the future (something done accidentally when trying to manufacture another fuel cell for his expeditions damaged ship, a ship that was damaged only because Buzz decided to investigate the planet the movie takes place on), he meets up with his Partners granddaughter and the other characters and begins to grow a connection with them, and thus a connection to the world and the life he missed out on. Zurg was a Buzz that was thrown centuries ahead, and spent his life nearly totally alone, consumed by his guilt and the obsession with getting to go back and fix his mistake, even if it means erasing two generations of people out of existence by preventing the circumstances of their birth from ever happening. Zurg is a Buzz who lost sight of himself and his code, and Buzz challenges his own weaknesses by fighting Zurg. If Zurg had been just an evil space guy, that would have been fun for it's own reasons, but we wouldn't get a Best-of-Startrek level sci-fi idea out of it if they had

if anything they wanted a space road trip of him going back to the colony after going off course, making alien allies he has to resort in teaming up with all while it's a literal space race to get back home before zurg invades his colony and fend his forces off.
From the first trailers, it was obvious this movie wasn't going to be a high adventure movie. You can be disappointed or dissatisfied, but I have no interest in discussing what might have been.

The new one was equally as lazy and unsatisfying. Leaving it as the original would've at least been a nod to the thing it's based off of.
Again, this movie just shouldn't have been made if they were too self-conscious to actually make it Buzz Lightyear; a parody on Silver Age sci-fi and Star Wars. They could have leaned in to the Silver Age aspect more to differentiate from the mass of Star Wars content, but they didn't--it's just bland shit instead.

Yeah, because both Zurg and blue-belt Buzz believe they are the characters they portray and not just toys. Zurg says he is his father because that's what presumably happens to the character the toy is based on.

This first 30 minutes were the worst part. It would have benefited from more exposition instead of rushing it in one rushed mess.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I thought the first act was going to be the best, as the rest seems like completely generic wacky sci-fi adventure based on the trailer
What bugs me most is that everyone goes "welp were stuck here" when they still have the means to travel interstellar space. And to top it off they don't bother going back to Earth or even at least get back in contact with it. And are you going to tell me that Earth doesn't know they're gone and sent someone after them?

Them going to orbit is not the same as reasonable interstellar travel. To cross interstellar distances without aging to death en route, you need FTL. Without the hyperspeed crystal, you can't go faster the light. You could vibe up in orbit all you want tho.
They have a complete crystal in the middle of the film anon. The second half of the movie is all about Buzz getting it to the mother ship to take everyone back to earth
Even with the crystal, the big ship still had everyone in Stasis. Also the mission was "get everyone home", not "frick off in a lil' bombership and run to earth with limited supplies at the first chance you get"
Those flights were test flights because they couldn't pin point how to make a complete crystal. When Buzz finally gets the crystal, Burnstrandt just goes "nah we're good" and Buzz can't believe no one is jumping the chance to leave the planet to go back to Earth

Obviously it was a viable planet if they could live on it for so long. From a hard sci fi standpoint they would have just genophaged everything and colonized it. I can answer questions. I didn’t care about Alisha or Buzz’s relationship with her because she’s barely in the movie. The scene where Buzz finds Alisha’s last recording isn’t as impactful since there’s no build up to her importance. Cutting down the original cast to give Buzz more time with his mentor would’ve solved the issue.

I just came back. Watched 4dx.
I went in with low expectations because of all the buzz on the co catalog about low box office numbers.
It was excellent. Pacing was perfect. Started off running and didn't slow down. I never felt the film was slow or boring, even the dramatic moments. Realistic backgrounds were fantastic. The message was good. There were moving moments. Humour was occasional, but never felt out of place. The film was action-packed and exciting.
One of the children in the audience yelled out, "That was so awesome!" as soon as the credits started.
I can't think of a better candidate for the gold standard of children's action-adventure film.
