I thought it was a pretty sad, maybe slightly overhyped (on Cinemaphile) movie as I was watching it, but for some reason the "I can't beat it" scene is what brought me to tears and elevated it to another level for me emotionally. I'm sure the attempted suicide scene would have gotten to me a bit as well if I hadn't seen it spoiled as a reaction image/webm so many times since the movie's release.
I listened to the DVD commentary, and Lonergan all but outright states that the nephew having two gfs on the go at once was him writing an alternate history for himself because had trouble dating and didn't get laid at highschool.
It's good but I found the kid annoying. Also, Affleck's character seemed like an annoying butthole even before he became hugely depressed so it was kind of weird how they had the whole thing of his wife still loving him seeing as I the way it was going I thought she didn't love him even when they were were married from the flashbacks. I guess she just loved him despite him being a bit of a shithead which is fine, but I thought it was abit weird.
yeah, depression has always existed and is referenced in tales from antiquity. the book of Ecclesiastes is literally some depressed 400BChanner complaining about the world.
Literally me
You burned three of your kids to death in a housefire?
I’m a racist incel. The three kids are a metaphor for my hopes and dreams.

Man, the acting in this scene, they were on fire. A smouldering performance. Really brought the house down.

Anons, were our parents as depressed as we are? I feel like most millennials are depressed nowadays.
