She wouldn't be sexy if she took off the mask, because then we'd know how young she is.

I'd laugh at this because it seems obviously absurd, but I think you're actually onto something. In the sequel, she looks much better with her mask on, because it's a bit harder to tell that she's aged out of the part.

Puberty hit her like a bullet train. And not in a good way. She looks weird because she has wide shoulders and thick arms, zero curves, a very short torso and long legs that don't seem to fit the rest.
And there's also the fact that most movies she is in tend to flop horribly. Last relevant thing sshe did were voicing Nimona and Wednesday Addams.

The filmmakers claimed that they fought with studios to keep her the same age in the movie, because they thought that people would sexualize her if they aged her up to 19. Their stated motivation strains my credulity.

        Anonymous

they're not wrong though. only the pedos sexualize her but that's not the general audience

to them it is so over the top child goes on a killing spree. it worked and it was the right call

It's more that I think that the part they have the character playing is inherently sexual. Like, sure, she's not explicitly sexual, like she's not a prostitute or something, but she is a Tarantino-type lead, y'know? She's a plausible-deniability fetish character in the same way that the Bride or Buffy are. If she was 19 instead of 13, sure, the sexualization would be coming from normies instead of pedos. But I don't think there would actually be MORE sexualization happening. Perky Legal Hot Girl Assassin characters are dime-a-dozen; she wouldn't stand out in pop culture at 19 the way she does at 13. There'd be more people sexualizing her, but not as hard. She'd be passe.

Saying this feels kind of dumb, but... weren't the late 2000s the era of "hit" as euphemism/slang for "frick"?

              Anonymous

It still gets used but in this case it's more of a variation of "hitman". Hit-girl wouldn't work with the slang term

                Anonymous

I mean obviously the "hitman" variant is the intended read; I just figure it might have rung, like, 1% naughtier when it was written than it does now.

The first kick-ass book had a perfect arc for both Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass and it should have ended there and never been touched again.

    Also book > movie

I only have a passing familiarity with the comics (I know the broad strokes of how they differ from the films), but I have a similar take. The first movie was great, almost perfect. The second had potential, but overall it was mid and failed to justify its existence.

        Anonymous

The movie was in pre-production before the book was even finished, but even so the differences they chose for the movie were pretty extreme and odd when compared to what the whole point of the book was.

Big-Daddy in the book had zero real beef with the mob. His wife wasn't killed, she left him because he was nuts. He was a comic book nerd who wanted to try the super hero thing for real, and so he made up his own backstory/villain. The abusive relationship between him and Hit-Girl was much clearer. At the end Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass realise that that stuff belongs in comic books and reality is fundamentally different, linking back to the very start when the crazy guy jumps off a building because he thought he could fly.

And Kick-Ass doesn't get the girl. He gets his arse kicked by the future doctors she is fricking.

My problem with BD and HG is that they completely alter the tone of the story. It’s like reading a haunted house story where in the second act an alien invasion happens.

It changes the story's cold reality of "You can't be Batman" to "You can't be Batman but Red Hood is plausible enough"

            Anonymous

I think they work well as foils to Kick-Ass. The thesis of Kick-Ass as a character is that superhero nonsense doesn't work in real life. The thesis of Hit-Girl as a character is that if somehow it did, it would be super fricked up.

That's what the movie did, yes. It turned what was basically an anti-cape story into a cape story. Book version is how it should have been.

Its already been said but I feel like Hit-Girl amd Big Daddy actively fight the thesis of Kick-Ass. A lot of the tone of Kick-Ass is based around the juxtaposition between comic book conventions and cold bitter reality. And then you have a 13 year old girl running around dual wielding samurai swords murdering grown ass men with ease and cussing up a storm. She forces us to suspend our disbelief in a way that fights the overall core of the series.

      Anonymous

Not only do I disagree, but I disagree with the other popular criticism, that the movie's more sympathetic take on Big Daddy does much to undermine the story. He's still depicted as an unstable child-abusing nutjob; that his plan actually more-or-less worked and he did it for the reasons he said he was doing it doesn't change that. He still brainwashed his daughter into a sociopath and threw her into harm's way. Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl are like a yin-yang, both halves of a critique of comic book conventions. Kick-Ass assumes a relatable everyman protagonist who becomes a superhero on a whim, and demonstrates that that's not a viable plan and just gets the shit beaten out of you. Hit-Girl assumes a successful power fantasy that trounces the bad guys, and demonstrates that that's not even really a desirable outcome, it leaves you as a shell of a person and it isn't something you should want anything to do with.

        Anonymous

I'd agree if the narrative wasn't fawned over how cool she is. Sure she's a shell of herself without a real childhood but the comics don't really portray that as a negative. Rather, it constantly asserts that her being like this is a good thing actually and we need someone like Hit-Girl to take care of the scum. She doesn't feel like a commentary on comic book characters she just IS a comic book character. Her backstory doesn't ground her, its just her superhero origin now.

    Funny, but excessively violent.

It's not rewatchable, just like the Kingmen movies.

If it was more like Face Off or any Tarantino movie, it would have more of a re-watch factor, which is probably what differentiates something like Hit Girl from 'decent/good' movie to great.

IF you meant the COMIC, I don't read Goat Licker.
