Slugefest was the best thing to happen to the Chipmunks and it's not even an official release. It's strange since that's also how their revival in the 80s started, when a DJ screwed around with Blondie's "Call Me" on the air and told his listeners that it was a new release from the Chipmunks, prompting Ross Bagdasarian Jr. to dust off the franchise and do an official "Call Me" cover.

Chipmunks really do not work well now since the music industry is not as strong any longer and there is no huge list of modern pop songs to draw from to make Chipmunk versions of. Not like there was in past decades.
It was peak in the 80s because music was also peak entertainment in the 80s. when music videos were a huge thing that people just watched hours of and loads of kids shows were trying to find some way to capitalize on that. Kidd Video, Wolfman Jack Adventures, and Jem also played music videos in the exact same Mtv format in every episode too.

I think the cgi Chipmunks cartoon handled the music well, by making it a song montage in each episode.

A modern day reboot would just make them kpop stars. They all dance in unison like most pop troops do now. Either that or make them streamers. Alvin would play Fortnite, Simon would do long video essays on stuff and Theodore would be a mukbang legend who just eats and chats and the girls love him.

Theodore as one of those vloggers who just film themselves eating things. There's no way that that can remain child friendly. The 80s cartoon had Chip-punks. 50's style do-wop. A circus episode, since that sort of thing was popular on tv. (aerial tv, remember)

The chipmunks are chipmunks because c's have high squeaky voices. In the 60s people would play 45's-type records at high speed, making the voices higher pitched. They thought it was funny. So some guy put out a single or a 45 that was like that and for some crazy reason, it was a hit.

I was actually surprised at how accurate the 3D Nick's Chipmunks felt. I passed the show off because of how ugly the characters looked but sat down and watched the actual show and felt almost spot on to the 80's/90's(I can't remember what year) Chipmunks cartoon, almost. And fricking Dave's voice, did they bring back his voice actor because he was spot on to the original?

There's no place for them really in the modern climate. They're too cringy for adults, not based enough for kids, and in general no-one listens to the same music anymore. Most younger kids don't even know who the Chipmunks are. They let the brand die. It didn't evolve.
This is somebody who loves The Chipmunks. They need a really good reboot that doesn't go woke but also adapts to modernity in some kind of way.

There's a ton of forgotten 80s songs out there. Due to copy-writes, making up forgotten songs for 80s stars would be necessary. But making videos for these songs is sure to be the sort of craziness that only animation can make cost-effective.

You can't guarantee success, but you can at least make a good movie. Those are the ones that last, that you see posters for in friend's houses, etc. Nightmare before christmas still has merch on shelves somewhere- because they had to order new merch.

Another Chipmunks series has come and gone. Is this the pinnacle of the series? Will this never be surpassed? Will this level of animation never be reached again? Nay, will future version, if there be any, never have the freedom to do things like the Cinderella bath scene again?
I must say, this animation quality is top notch feels really lively and full of energy, a bit Bluthian but less orthodox, I doubt there are many living animators with this kind of talent still alive or working, sad.
