as much as they'd pay him for having wrote the story for a billion dollar motion picture franchise?

He was already paid for that.

Much more than the nothing they would have to pay him there.

Disney, which owns the Star Wars franchise, has the creative freedom to adapt any Star Wars story they choose. The decision to adapt the sequels rather than the Thrawn trilogy might have been influenced by various factors, such as the desired narrative direction, audience appeal, or the feasibility of translating the books into a visual medium. It's important to note that the Thrawn character did eventually make it into the Star Wars universe through other adaptations.

Because none of the original trio, Hamil, Fisher, and Ford, were in any shape for three movies where they're still action heroes.

People would have hated recasting that trio. In retrospect we now know that almost anything would have been better than what Disney went with. But in practice, people would have hated those characters being recast. They would have wondered, why not just make movies with the old actors?

Because it’s set 5 years after ROTJ and all the actors were 35 years older? Also, what makes you think the Thrawn trilogy has the same scale and grandness as the first two trilogies?

This trilogy and the rest of the EU was what lit the fire under George Lucas' ass to create the prequels. He was content licensing the characters and just making money. The fact that fans embraced the EU and compared them favorably to the original trilogy made Lucas get butthurt. Disney inherited the EU and tossed it aside out of pure hubris and spite for the original creators so they wouldn't get any credit.

Disney sucks but I didn't care for the Thrawn trilogy overall and outright disliked Heir to the Empire. Dark Force Rising and Last Command were alright but I didn't understand the hype. Point.

is the The Hand of Thrawn duology (1997–1998) any good?

I reckon if the books are good, just read and appreciate them. The adaptions would always disappoint.

100x less disappointing than the sequels. And they'd have a better starting point to continue the series after than the idiocy now

True. The Thrawn trilogy did present a great 'fall of the empire' world. If the newest trilogy would ahve done that, it would have been great.
