Why are they actively trying to make these characters look like crap these days.

Subversive mindset
I miss the "cerebus mouths" they used to have
People got it in their heads that the turtles need to be visually distinct. Raph being buff and Don being skinny in particular stuck.
Personally, I always found it more interesting when they were virtually identical and had their personalities and fighting styles to set them apart.
I wonder if markings Leo will be a thing at some point.
This, because they looked identical their personalities are what set them apart but now because they all look different they lose more of their distinct personalities
Just because Don does machines doesn't mean he has to be a nerd
one time I'd like to see don as a mechanic car guy into maintaining and making cool cars, like the sort of dude who'd get upset if you'd talk smack about a certain build and is into racing.
Incestual iteration.
Someone looks at the 87 cartoon and goes
>what if they were edgier?
And then someone looks at that and goes
>what if they were cool, but less edgy?!
and then someone looks at that and goes
>tch what if they were more like the original, but more modern and stylish?
and then
>what if they were REALLY stylized and extra *subcultural*???
And so on and so on
I love the goofy 1980 cartoon designs. They look like dudes wearing turtle costumes, it looks so corny and appealing at the same time. I don't like the serious designs, too boring.
Women truly and unironically prefer crap
I like all red mask, rainbow is stupid.
I feel like all black would be fine, too. I don't think we're ever going back to the turtles being identical in build and height, though. I don't hate it in concept, but I don't know if anyone has actually done it in a way that isn't a little obnoxious.
They can vary a little but turning Ralph into a hulk, Donnie into a lanklet nerd and Mikey into a retarded Manlet is always annoying
>They can vary a little but turning Ralph into a hulk
They fused Ralph and Slash. Now no one help themselves.
Agreed on all points. Raph being the one who leans into strength training is fine. Mikey being more acrobatic is fine. They can have their own specialization that reflect their personalities, but the differences should be minimal, especially because they're all still young.
Hulk Raph doesn't make particular sense to me because they're fuckin ninjas, not wrestlers or MMA fighters
Everyone forgets they're supposed to be ninjas. Strike hard and fade away, and all that.
Obviously they can't be full on ninjas, but it'd be nice to have some element of that, as opposed to them just being generic fighters
I think it’s a weird stereotype of Raph always being “angry” so they make him bulkier ala Roid Rage or something to that effect. It’s dumb no matter how you look at it
Idiocy
Because they're hacks who can't comprehend the original appeal of something and think changing it or dressing it up makes it better when in fact they're only making it more generic by doing so, in an ironic twist of intent vs. impact
It's like, a character like Sonic is an example of a design that has been ultimately handled well. Small changes have been made over the years, little nuances to get certain things across, but the design is iconic for a reason, so you don't want to mess it up. The movie Sonic we almost got is basically the reality of TMNT.
its been done before the 1987 series gave them belt buckles and colored bandanas
Those would be examples of small changes and little nuances to get certain things across, in my book. The core of the design is the same, they just made little adjustments to make them more kid friendly. That's fine to me.
I didn’t like the design of the 87 cartoon turtles the eyes are ugly it’s weird that the toys got it right with the face and everything more then the cartoon.
That's fair enough, but I don't think they're that far of a cry apart, though obviously different
because they want to market them to girls and "girls"
Peter Laird gets a lot of flack but that's one thing he kept in line; he prevented artists from redesigning them too much of making them too different because it missed the point. the failed WB kids pitch was the furthest he said he'd go as far as making them different body types.
What does Mikey have, handcuffs?
Its a cassette player and headphones.
>it missed the point
What point?
Basically that they're all dedicated to training and keeping fit. A lot of fan redesigns make Donnie so nerdy he forgoes his physical skills, when he was still really dedicated to keeping strong. All the turtles look equally "cool", there's no fat one, skinny one, normal one, etc. That said I like how 2012 did it even if I didn't like the art style.
It may be boring to you, but I think it's fun whenever they do things where you can tell which turtle is which even without headbands. I've seen art in B&W where you can tell which turtle is which
Sometimes the original creators don't always have the best ideas. Having four nearly-identical characters is boring.
Ah yes, the classic "i don't like original thing that was hugely successful and i know what's better for it even though i'm not the audience of it" poster
NTA, but it's more that creators who try to reinvent their work aren't immune to trying to improve or reinvent their own characters in all the wrong ways that other artists have also fucked up. It's just best not to assume that the original author will always know best, as they are flawed humans too.
I think it's also best to assume that if a lot of people like something, it doesn't need to be "fixed" by people who think that thing isn't good in the first place
That is also a pretty profound issue that needs to stop happening. People who hate everything about a series being hired to put their own spin on it when they should just be making something original instead.
Think about this site.
People COULD make threads about things they like or cool ideas they have, but they'd much rather shitpost and complain about a twitter post some rando made.
It's the same logic out there. People don't WANT to make something original. They want to complain and get that dopamine rush.
Yeah, a lot of modern adaptions seem to suffer from that. Even if everyone and their mother swears how they're die hard fans of whatever property they're working on, you know it's bullshit when what they do doesn't resemble the original thing
It's because everyone working in the pop culture entertainment industry wants to put their mark on someone else's work, so they can say for the rest of their lives
>you see that character? That one is mine. I'm the one who changed the face of this decades old beloved franchise and now everyone has to acknowledge my work
Which is why it's always some retcon shit about how The main character's never-mentioned half-sister is actually the smartest, most powerful, most badass, savior of all timelines and reality itself, who is a stronger and better fighter who beat up the big bad's master. Also, all the old characters have to die and go away forever, for contrived reasons, so every subsequent series has to only feature the new guy's original characters (do no steal).
Which is EXACTLY what Tom Waltz is trying to do with The Last Ronin, and I fear that people are going to start insisting that because the first run sold so well, that his retarded story is going to be considered the canon continuity... and unsurprisingly it ends with everyone by the token female (April) and Waltz's original characters being the only ones left to carry the story.
Agreed, Mikey should live and be a mentor to the next generation of students. Let the story end here. It doesn't make sense that April and Marie have to create another new mutant turtles. There is no need to force these new turtles into the fate of the previous generation of turtles.
Waltz introducing too many characters in IDW TMNT main series. Because of him and Campbell, the turtles is no longer feel like main characters. Their roles in the plot are constantly being sidelined.
I'd rather throw out Waltz's entire script and start fresh if we're going to get a TMNT story where they have to pass the torch to a new team of mutants. The TMNT can beat Shredder and the Foot. They've done is plenty of times before. You can still have a difficult future that requires mutant ninjas built from the groundwork laid by the TMNT comics throughout the last 40 years.
Now there's Dimension-X alien tech circulating the planet. Ooze accidents and other shit have created a permanent mutant population on Earth and now there's mutant gangs and crime syndicates. Doesn't have to be so overwrought that we have to kill off all the heroes and just drop new ones in.
>white eyes
That's the way to go
I really like the WB pitch designs
Well they do live in the sewers
>make them look like crap as advanced camouflage
Because good art styles are expensive and even more expensive to animate. But if you use ugly trash art styles? It's easier to animate and cheaper in general.
You should see what they do to April
On the one hand, I don't like the turtles being too uniform in their silhouettes (especially 2023) ; on the other hand, designs like RoTMNT turn me down just as much - no matter how you try, Ralph doesn't work as a giant. I think the 2012 show hit the right balance, with slightly different shades of green and body types that feel distinct and hint at the characters' personalities without going over the top.
Giant Raph doesn't even make sense to me. He's the hot tempered one, I don't even think being hot tempered = huge is a common trope other than literally just the Hulk. Giving Don a fucking alien head is retarded as shit, but I get the logic behind the numbskull idea.
Yeah, if an ensemble cast has a giant, he's often the gentle kind, in order to be more endearing. Ralph has a soft side (as shown with Spike, Mona and Chompy), but he's best known "as cool but (c)rude".
As for Don, the forehead thing looks just as bad as the glasses.
They always forget that Donnie is also a proficient fighter. When his fighting skills are combined with his intellect and gadget, he is a Batman.
Maybe they could make Raph's personality more like Guts.
> Ralph
Thanks, autism.
There's nothing wrong with those designs. Looks better than the 2012 series.
The armor is pretty dumb, looks like stylized knight armor, not very ninja like at all
Shredder's design is always dumb.
We're never going back, are we?
