Tolkien Estate refused to let Peter Jackson be involved with Rings of Power

>Initially Amazon asked Jackson to be involved with Rings of Power but sources suggest author J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate was against having Jackson on board. This shouldn’t be surprising as the estate had no involvement with his films and Christopher Tolkien has previously slammed the trilogy in the press as “eviscerating” his father’s books, claiming they turned his novels into action movies for young people that lack “beauty and seriousness.” But the estate is involved with the series – Amazon paid the estate an astounding $250 million for the rights to make the show.

    Jackson:
    >“They asked me if I wanted to involved – [writer-producer Fran Walsh] and I – and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script. So they said, ‘As soon as we get the first couple scripts, we’ll send them to you.’ And the scripts never showed up. That’s the last thing I heard, which is fine. No complaints at all.”
    >“I’ll be watching it. I’m not the sort of guy who wishes ill will. Filmmaking is hard enough. If somebody makes a good film or TV show, it’s something to celebrate. The one thing I am looking forward to is actually seeing it as a perfectly neutral viewer.”

    Amazon's Response:
    >"In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to the watching The Rings of Power.”

It's hard to be on Peter Jackson's side here with those atrocious Hobbit movies. He just lucked out with the Lord of the Rings saga, being in the right place and right time. They have NOT aged well.

You don't make the LOTR trilogy out of luck. It was a passion project that was made out of love and seven years of investment from everyone involved.
The Hobbit was a cash grab he wasn't interested in and only joined after Del Toro dropped out and they brought a dump truck full of money to his door. He did it purely for the money and it shows.

          Anonymous

He shouldn't have done it for the money, he should have done it so the movies would be good. For a while, he tried and mostly succeeded. People hate on the first movie for being silly and childish, but The Hobbit was a book for kids. An Unexpected Journey immediately disarms and alerts the audience to what they're about to see, with the comic stuff in the Shire meeting and what amounts to a musical number. A second and far more ridiculous one of these occurs in the goblin cave. Apart from adding a bunch of stupid shit that wasn't necessary and fricking up the warg scene, it was a basically fun bit of fluff that was different enough from LotR to avoid pissing all over the trilogy's reputation.

Then the second movie comes out, musical numbers are gone, a bunch of ridiculous shit happens in Mirkwood that isn't compatible with the LotR timeline, and we have this utterly moronic action sequence on the river during what should have been a magical scene with the barrels, Tolkien's serene illustration of which have graced the book's cover for most of its history. Fine. Not good, not awful, but most importantly it doesn't go with the first movie, at all.

But then Battle of the Five Armies comes out, and it's a fricking bloodbath, with gore flying everywhere, literally 90 minutes of nonstop violence and death, including needlessly cruel death scenes for some of the most likable characters. Obviously no musical numbers. No childhood magic to speak of. As someone who had just read through The Hobbit with his kid and had already shown him the first film, it hurt to watch this. Probably the most depressing movie I've seen since Alien Resurrection.

All of this happened because Jackson didn't know what he wanted, and then when he found it but the studio balked he pussied out.

Loved the first Hobbit movie for it comfyness. I only read Hobbit in the comic book (sort of) form when I was a kid.
Went to IMAX for the second movie. The third I wastched at some discount screening where we were the only people in the theater. The staff litteraly forgot about us

Blaming Jackson for the Hobbit trilogy is moronic. The Hobbit movies were bad almost entirely because of corporate meddling. Making two movies from the Hobbit would have been hard, but three? Impossible. No matter who was directing, the movies were going to be almost all filler because there's only barely enough material to support one full length film in the hobbit, its a very short story. The cartoon covers everything and its 78 minutes.

I doubt that's actually true. They might have the power technically, but I have no doubt that their contract with Amazon is, in practice, just using their name as a marketing tool in exchange for more money than they can ever use.

            >I doubt that's actually true
It is true, they appointed several members of staff on the show, the translator for the Tolkien languages for example. This was talked about recently when the dialect coach on the show gave an interview. The production was not allowed to alter even a single word of the the Quenya/Sindarin/Khuzdul the Estates people translated for them unless it went back to them first
They also had final say regarding the showrunners, Amazon were not allowed to decide their own. Only out forward candidates

              Anonymous

As I said, I have no doubt that in practice that's all marketing fluff. They're paid to care about some details like that, that don't get in the way of agenda-pushing, and lend an air of legitimacy to the project. In practice, they'd never actually veto anything that Amazon would specifically want.

They take what is essentially white inspired folklore and tales; then proceed to insert non-whites where they don't belong.
This creates a false image of racial equality which in turn causes people of white ethnicities to let their guard down which makes it easier to undermine.

The goal is mass immigration and then dispossession. The game plan is very similar to what Zionists did to Palestine:
              >Start moving people to a place, claiming refugee status
              >Use that small number of people as a springboard, encourage chain migration via family reunification
              >When people start to object cry racism to silence them
              >When you reach a critical mass of people concoct some fake history of how actually, YOU are the original people and THEY are the occupiers
              >Use wars to "reclaim" territory
              >And when you finally have total control, you gaslight everyone into thinking YOU the occupier are the victim and everyone who criticizes you is literally Satan

Amazon profits more in the long run from debasing the western canon and turning people further into demoralised consumerist slugs with no cultural framework to hold onto and take hope from. A mere TV show profits is pittance by comparison to the potential of the social engineering that their media arm can accomplish. 'Go woke go broke' is not correct, going woke and losing short term profits is an investment toward a greater payout down the line.

Blue wizards did get sent in the 2nd age in a later version, specifically to try and help the people of Harad/Rhun/Khand who were rebelling against Sauron
I doubt they will actually have that meteor guy be Gandalf though, probably just wanted some cliff hanger bait for s2

Isn't the wizards supposed to come on a boat from Valinor? Cirdan gives Gandalf his ring when he arrives at the havens, making Saruman eternally seethe.

In most versions all five arrive in the third age and the two blue wizards go east and never heard of again.
In later versions Tolkien changed it so that the two blue wizards arrive thousands of years earlier and are sent by the Valar specifically to try and counter Sauron in the east, where they have partial success. They could have been sent around the same time as Glorfindel.

The latter is probably what the show will go with, it also tends to be the more popular version too

There's also the scene where the Black Riders stab the beds at the inn while the hobbits are safe somewhere else. Jackson referencing the animated movie has been known for years, I don't know why people are playing contrarian now.

            Anonymous

even the camera angle is the same when comparing Bakshis and Jacksons "PROUDFEET"
You would be a fool to deny how many adaptations Jackson lifted inspiration from, or "aped" if you want to denigrate him for it.

            Anonymous

I just looked that exact passage in the book and you're bullshitting. In it, Frodo is actually separated from the others (who are the ones hinding down in a hollow further away), so he is alone when the rider comes by and he actually hides in a patch of long grass. While it's technically not impossible that both PJ and Bakshi came with the same depiction, with the same framing etc of the scene on their own, I think it's very fricking unlikely. I'm willing to bet my left nut that the John Howe illustration you posted is also posterior to Bakshi's version, and probably based on it.

            Anonymous

IIRC, the scene in Fellowship where the Nazgul attack what appears to be the hobbits' beds with swords is in the Bakshi movie, but not in the book.

              Anonymous

That's correct, the book only shows the aftermath of Strider taking the hobbits back to their rooms after they've been ransacked by the wraiths, and there's no mention of slashed beds

Making Galadriel your protagonist is a mistake. Her purpose in the serialized LotR story is to show up to shock and scare you as a 7 foot tall almost alien being with questionable motives.

She should have served the same purpose in this show, as a season finale bang moment with your more human protagonists meeting her at a pivotal moment. Taking the magic out of her and making her look human misses the point so hard just because her name is a memberberry for the lowest common denominator

Galadriel's magical abilities mostly come from Nenya, which she won't have until S2 or 3 and even then won't be able to use, except maybe for a brief period until Saurons defeat in s5

Simon Tolkien always was a complete sellout. I don't know anything about the rest of them. But look at it this way: Being related to Tolkien doesn't magically provide people with taste or any suitability to manage the property. Christopher was that, but he didn't get by just by being Tolkien's son, he put in a lot of time into understanding his father's work (and working with it to an extent). He was the first and greatest LotR fan, whose understanding and respect for the work was and never will be matched. Nobody else can claim that, regardless of lineage.

        >I don't know anything about the rest of them
They mostly keep to themselves, you can find some interviews with Simon's brother Adam when Children of Hurin was released.
He is probably more similar to his father with his views on the movies, some of his comments were fairly harsh actually.

Chris was a pedantic moron that cashed on his father's success. His autistic puritanic views on every LOTR related or even inspired media don't change this simple fact. He was less lenient than his sons true, but that's because he feared Hollywood might take away the franchise from him, thus depriving him from his main income

          Anonymous

Chris loved his father and his work. You can cynically, and desperately, try to paint a straw man version of Chris that cared only for money or control but that doesn't jive with any of the surviving correspondence between him and his father.
If you love something its only natural to not want it denigrated.

Hayao Miyazaki was such an extreme Tolkien purist that he hated the Peter Jackson films.
He would probably have a heart attack after seeing The Rings of Power.

Speaking of Miyazaki, it would be really great if he adapted The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as a single TV series.
He would then adapt everything else Tolkien made as OVAs, with a theatrical movie here and there.
This would have been kino, especially if Miyazaki stuck really close to the source material.

      Anonymous

You know Miyazaki would want to make a little girl the main character, right? He's always wanted a daughter more than a son, and his works reflect it. He's more or less said this outright.
There'd be very little for him to adapt except the bit with Haleth killing the orc army or the Beren and Luthien story (this has the most kino potential, tbh). But hes feeling his age now and he's been been too distracted with 3D to really take something like this on with his old skill.

      Anonymous

Miyazaki didn't just hate the movies, he hated the original story written by Tolkien. Miyazaki hates simple good vs evil stories without grey morals. He's too much of a spiritual midget to understand their value and the lessons they teach. If Miyazaki directed a LOTR movie, Sauron would be some fat, grumpy witch who turns good halfway through the movie and then the one ring just disappears and orcs, elves and humans will have to work together to stop an allegory for climate change.

He should have read the Silmarillion then (Tolkien himself wanted it to be published alongside LOTR, but his publishers disagreed). In the Silmarillion Sauron (and even Morgoth) come as much more understandable and nuanced figures. Sauron's goal is not to be evil for evil's sake, rather he wants to accrue enough power to rule Arda in an orderly manner, bringing everyone under one banner and making things like wars and famines impossible. What Tolkien criticizes is not the goal, but the means he used to reach it.
