According to most metrics that can be found online about comic book shops, the average DC fan is generally 15 to 25 years older than the average Marvel fan. If the average age of Marvel fan is now anywhere between 40-55 that would mean most average DC fans are either sick, dying, or nearly dead. Just like the comic book industry itself. R.I.P. Superman.

The "everything is canon" bullshit that killed off their continuity.

You either make fully self contained runs without character growth or story progression or you focus on continuity, DC got no continuity while their comics pretend there is progression with every run talking about the previous run.

DC tried to have it's cake and eat it and fricked up.

I agree to an extent because it feels like a hamster wheel where we keep on returning to these indecisive takes on what happened and what didn't happen. Constantly looking back on the past rather than looking forward. The fact that they call their events "Crises" should be a red flag to anyone at this point.

      >lack of continuity
      >focusing way too much on the trinity specially Batman, every single event and crossover is about the trinity only
      >no DC hero other than the trinity is allowed to be relevant in universe, no hero can be influential, no hero can show up in less famous heroes comics
      >they completely destroyed their Cosmic Patheon and completely forgot about their alien species so no cosmic worldbuilding
      >League of Shadows, Intergang, crime Sindicate, Injustice League and Cort of Owls are all either destroyed or turned into jobbers so no relevant factions
      >shilling trinity sidekicks far more than main heroes
And those are only their unique mistakes, if we include what both DC and Marvel are doing wrong the list will double.
DC needs to get their shit together with continuity, rebuild their worldbuilding, bring back the factions, abandon all sidekicks but Dick Grayson and Supergirl(those are the only ones that sell) and shill other heroes both in universe and in real life

Marvel is just as progressive but they don't feel...as agressive about it? Not sure how to describe but it feels like Marvel is pandering to progressives but is not straight up telling to everybody else to go frick themselves like DC is doing nowadays.

Outsourced to Image. Why do you think they have kept Jim Lee on all as CEO after all these years ? It's so he can act as intermediary between the two companies so they sort out some type of deal. A deal that has been in negotiation stages for a few years now but is according to insides close to being finalised and sign off on.

Amazingly if IDW didn't frick up Star Wars comics they would already be publishing Marvel Comics by now as Disney is still looking to get out of printing game altogether. No word yet on who they have approached or if they approached anyone at all. The fear is now that movies are bombing they might just shut it all down together out of spite.

I honestly don't think that's true. There appears to be a lot of Spider-Man fans who are only interested in Ultimate and barely give a frick about ASM.

In just three days, an average issue #5 of USM more than doubled the sales of a landmark ASM #50 despite being out for one week less, with morons bleating online about how there's just so little of MUH ACTION, and also costing only half as much.

I think ASM's goose is pretty cooked, at this point. No wonder Dan Slott is panicking, his shit and Jackpot and Black Cat isn't even in the Top 50.

I actually thought ASM #50 would've placed higher in the chart but hoped USM #5 would've beat it. What astounded me was that USM #5 not only outperformed ASM #50, but also did so despite being released a week after ASM #50.

And not only that but ASM #49 still somehow outperformed ASM #50. I don't know if it's because of the Blood Hunt tie-in or the Disney variants

Realistically, how many books should Marvel and/or DC be putting out each month?

Be realistic, paper production is never going to get cheaper. When people make comments like "go back to newsprint!" "hire web cartoonists" they don't actually know how the adult working world works.

Paper goods just get more expensive to produce and really can be a waste of natural resources. I would love if anthologies were more popular in American comics, but I think American audiences need to be reconditioned. I would love for there to be smaller, more compact digest sized trades for easy reading on commutes + vacations. I think I would keep up with a DC or Marvel website that had a healthy stable of some weekly webcomics in an easy to read format without a lot of ad spam bullshit.

IMO, I'm more interested in Black Label + Elseworlds trades, YA graphic novels, webtoons & manga adaptations. My preferred "mainline" universe is smaller, more self contained - like the size of an Ultimate line. I'm okay with buying a book the size of Batman: Urban Legends so the B & C listers can still have some 10 page continued adventures.

Realistically, DC and Marvel could shrink their mainline down to a dozen books with more backups and focus the rest of their output on non-continuity-dependent trade paperbacks.

It's not 1957 anymore. It's not even 1994 anymore. Paper production has changed

It isn't that expensive to print. 50% of their price tag is pure greed. It costs about 10 cents to print a book in a mass publication, ad shipping, wholesale profit and resale profit and it should be roughly $2 per comic. Not counting the artistic costs.

I'd believe it tbh, a quick check tells me that any random person can get books printed relatively cheaply online
          https://www.printingcenterusa.com/printing/comic-book-printing
Not sure on what quality you are getting but 50k copies at 24 color pages each is only $0.56 for each book, i'd assume Marvel can do it in house for cheaper than i can pay someone online.

We don't know. But the vast discrepancy suggests that the industry is not doing is well as it used to. But both Marvel and DC decided to hide their sales numbers.

The best would be to ask your LCS about how they're seeing things.

It's also worth noting that we're in a recession and everything is getting pricier. And people are more likely to cut back on comics than to cancel their Netflix subscription.

Marvel is just as progressive but they don't feel...as agressive about it? Not sure how to describe but it feels like Marvel is pandering to progressives but is not straight up telling to everybody else to go frick themselves like DC is doing nowadays.

Marvel is incredibly "woke" as well but they seem more... gradual with it? DC in comparison felt like there was a random hard shift out of nowhere into full pozzmode.

I feel like most of the time for Marvel, making their characters “woke” helps to service the character and actually makes sense/has interesting stories to tell with it, while with DC most of the time it’s just to appeal to a crowd that doesn’t even read this shit. Obviously there are exceptions, but Marvel handles it better overall.

Marvel is corporate. not woke, they look at the data and see who's not buying Marvel stuff and they try to appeal to them. They want the characters to be hit so they can use them outside comics
Everything is meticulously designed to succeed, and the Marvel universe is better designed to slot new characters in so they have a chance to find an audience.
DC just does what they think their fans like, all the Superboy and Robin fanart is gay, they make the a gay Superman and Robin, for the diversity is just hollow fanservice, it's that surface level, and it's why all their characters flop.

Yeah that's clearly the case, their executives are not only using the company to preach their political views without caring about making a profit but they preach it in a fake way, they only do choices that will make good clickbait.

DC executives don't care about DC or gay people, they just want to make themselves look good on the news, where is Midnighter their most popular gay character? Why is Aqualad personality completely changed out of nowhere even though he already was a fan favorite? They don't give a frick about anything but themselves. And it's pretty clear they are ready to move to another company when it finally colapse

DC comics as we know it is just about finished.
it's time to retire all the silver age and beyond characters and create a brand new fiction with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman and reinvent and rethink the rest of the universe with a new cast and a new mythos surrounding them like they did in the Silver Age.

For me X-Men have always existed they have had some good and bad era's but when all is said I acknowledge ALL of those era's unlike Spider-Man since it ended for me with OMD. Since I find Peter having sold his marriage with MJ to Mephisto simply unacceptable. if it ever gets undone then maybe I will start to value Spider-Man again but I highly doubt it ever will.
