Rust was always optimistic deep down. He wouldn't have spent 20 years chasing the cult by himself if he thought it didn't matter or it couldn't be done.

      >>the whole season is about pessimism and negativism
The whole season is about the bullshit we tell ourselves to scapegoat being fricked up, Rust blames the world for his kid getting smooshed and Marty harps on about the importance of family whilst fricking everything but his wife and neglecting his kids until they turn into prostitutes

He's an optimist all the way back at the beginning of the show. He switches from insulting the revival church to defending them without even realizing it. By contrast Marty goes from defending them to insulting them by suggesting they're all rapists and murderers deep down when Rust suggests people can be inherently noble without religion.

Rust hates the wicked so much he will feign sympathy just to wrench it away from them. He didn't do it because it was his job. That's one of his many excuses. He did it because he just hates the people he hunts. He loses his job very early chronologically speaking, but he still kept at it because he hates them that much.
            >is that Nietzsche? Shut the frick up.

Rust having a change of heart in the last moments of the show is the best part about it. Some drunk has been finding hope is a great arc

All the shit he’s been through, what fixes him is killing a fat guy and getting shot? It’s such a trivial fix, it undermines his entire previous characterization, if his problem was so easy to get over.

No, rust was a true heart pessimist but at the same he was a walking contradiction because of his altruistic nature for his job as cop.

Pessimists don't make weepy crying statements about goodness defeating evil while gawking at the night sky. He was always a big softy hiding it, it's funny because even then Marty is the truly pessimistic one, and points out to Rust who has to correct him when Marty grimly points out there's less light than there is dark.

Rust at the end of the series had a big cumbaya afterlife moment finding hopeness in his life, its different case of Marty he didnt “died” like him

He didn't find happiness he found internal peace by confronting evil. He was suffering throughout the show. But the real him bleeds through time to time. He shows the world one thing, but he doesn't always believe what he says.

Rust was not what even the cast assumed he was from appearances. Multiple characters get him dead wrong.
        >I can see your soul at the edges of your eyes. It's corrosive.
        >take off your mask.
The villains all think Rust is some pathetic doomsayer who is empty deep down, but they're wrong. The whole take off your mask bit was about shedding what you show the world to reveal what you really are. Rust saw the void and rejected it.
